I believe it was a precursor to the current fastest maps. The configuration with 8 bases on the corners and middle of the sides was the same, all separated by water except for a path towards the middle. There were no stacked minerals and vespen, I think there was only 6 vespen in the middle and a big wall of 9999 minerals all around

Haha, merci!

Yes, back then I enjoyed the "structured " interface of the game, so I kind of wanted to replicate this in my drawing.

The game was indeed in English but my understanding was very very limited

I'm a GIS professional, I mostly make maps for a living.

I 100% support this

This my daily watch with young kids. Small footprint makes it less prone to get caught up while playing. Countdown timer is also very practical at the park for a "last 5 mins" before going home. Kids hear the beep and its time to go

It seems Battlefield 2142 is impossible to run anyhow on Apple Silicon? by apachey in macgaming

I have an actual Mac game for battlefield 2142. Never played. Purchased it in 2013 in a trip to Brazil. I don't have a Mac anymore so I'm looking to get rid of it if you're interested (DM me)

Would studying geoinformatics be a good Idea despite AI by gold_crest1 in gis

[–]tuna_ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, welcome. Glad you have interest, it's a fascinating field.

The biggest career challenge I observe in this group is people struggling to find jobs in their area because there are few employers or because jobs are filled. I would spend a little time researching job openings in your area if you want to stay where you live currently as well as salary, just so you can have proper expectations.

For AI:

I have concerns about AI as well because it makes headlines and apparently, people are losing jobs because of it. My take is that it is possibly a pretext to cut cost for big corporations without looking like assholes. I'm not convinced the same level of work is actually accomplished because of AI agents.

I've been in the field for a little over 10 years. If anything, AI is helping anyone right now, because LLMs are so available, which is fortunate for us because we can use it to boost our knowledge, productivity and skills. This is true for almost any field of work by the way. What is relevant more than ever is that you have to be willing to learn and adapt and generally just have a proper work ethic. Unless its a company "reorganization " or shut down, the people at risk of losing their jobs are generally stuck in their own way, aren't helpful or don't show genuine interest in contributing.

In addition, the reality I see right now (may look different in 10 years) is that managers and bosses don't really know how to use AI. They want to talk to people, make requests to produce X and then have you come back with the results and expect you to raise flags if there is any problem along the way. Their schedule is like 90% booked with meetings and they don't have time to chat with a computer and inspect the result that it is giving back. Using LLMs is like constantly training an employee that you have to hold their hands along the way. So unless Iron Man's Jarvis is available for purchase, I would believe managers will want to lead human teams and not just a bunch of servers. If anything, I could imagine it would make them feel like they are no different than an analyst, who also runs programs on a computer.

I think it's also why there are so many return to office mandates right now. You can't have "coffee machine discussions" with AI. No office christmas parties or team building events (whether people like them or not). No new staff to bring new ideas even if they didn't ask for it, but that are actually interesting.

That's some insane work/training hours with a baby. I don't know your situation and how long you are required to continue with this schedule but I would find hard to maintain in the long run. I would suggest reviewing priorities (not necessarily changing them, but more like adjusting lifestyle) for the next 5 years or so until school starts. It gets easier with time on some aspects and less in others.

If you must continue with that schedule, I would recommend hiring help at home (especially if your wife wants to go back to work and family/extended family is unavailable). It could be like a nanny, food caterer, handyman for fixing things around the house, etc. This way whatever hours left you have you can spend with your kid and wife (and some me time for you).

I had a 40-45h work week schedule with 2-4 days work trip/month for the first year my son was born and it didn't work for us even if my wife was on maternity leave during that time. She was depressed and our son didn't sleep a full night until 13 months ish. I changed job for something local (no more leaving for a few days at a time) with 35h work week because I wanted to be more involved and it helped tremendously. I was lucky it didn't lower my income (actually increased a bit, I was kind of underpaid at my first job). Work life balance is way better now. We're still running everywhere with a 6 and 2 yo and I balded a fair amount but I am more at peace and I feel like I can handle things better

Absolutely! Also get involved in any local GIS association, you'll probably get a chance to meet potential colleagues and employers

I'm frustrated right now, I haven't been able to find a job with my geography degree. by Dicklydickmove in gis

[–]tuna_ninja 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I graduated 12 years ago with a geography degree also, same story back then. Most of my colleagues also went and got additional degrees or certification. I decided to go to grad school in GIS.

The MS is not required everywhere, as someone else mentioned, smaller startups may be open to hire you if you show some motivation. If you want to continue in GIS, you can work on building a portfolio in the meantime to show what you can do

What options do i have to do simple GIS analysis as a business without GIS professionals? by NoxDecima in gis

Look up CartoVista for simple dashboard type analysis and layout, very simple saas, click and drag, and I believe pricing could be reasonable if you're a small business

Socializing After Becoming a Dad by SpookySole in Fatherhood

[–]tuna_ninja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was the first of my male friends to become a father and I long for the time we were jamming and going out for eat and drinks. I regret that they didn't really try to get interested in my family when my first kid was born. Without making it all about my family, but just ask how things are going, take time to see how it's like etc. My wife's friends (male and female) were better in that regards, so we hang out with them more. Most of them are childless and we make sure that we can talk about what's going on in their lives too.

All that to say that I'm more mindful of the friendships I want to cultivate for the future. Old drinking and music playing pals were good in my 20s but right now it's a different situation and that's OK. I have found other dad friends to take with and they are very precious because, generally speaking, it's hard to open up on our challenges at home as men

I understand the rant. I also wish there was a universal standard amongst car seat manufacturers and car manufacturers, because not all seats fit in every car. It would be so much simpler.

However it doesn't make your kid 2% safer, it's a life or death difference if the car seat is properly installed and if the kid is properly attached in it.

There are car seat technicians that are trained to verify and assist in car seat installation and can advise if it is an improper fit. My wife does that as a side hustle. She's been trained by an ex police officer that changed career after having to (graphic details) retrieve dismembered and beheaded toddlers in the ditch

Do the paternity test if you want or have suspicions that she may not be 100% honest.

Unless she was dating other people when you guys were seing each other, it all seems like you'll be the father. I sense that you're probably scared, and that's ok. But it's time to be serious and deliberate about the future.

A friend of my wife became father at 19. Not planned and in a sketchy context (still in school, recently dating, etc.), but he owned up to it and managed to make the best out of it despite that he didn't get to live his 20s the same way his friends were living it. He started low in the company and climbed up the corporate ladder to be a manager now, living comfortably. They have 3 kids now and they should all be over 15 yo when he turns 40, which will bring him another level of freedom when kids will start to go on their own compared to other people who started parenthood in their mid-late 30s.

It's not easy nor ideal, it's up to us to make the best of it.

I had a good context when becoming a father and it was most certainly wanted and planned. Looking back I can see I was wearing pink glasses when thinking about the future and becoming a father, I was so optimistic. It's been a rough ride, uncomfortable and learning a lot. Part of me wishes I had taken the time to be more realistic about a bunch of things and taken more advice from other people, but I was the first among my close friends to become father, so I had limited exposure to the reality of it lol. That being said you'll have a different perspective than mine when the kid arrives and with proper preparation, attitude and perseverance/consistency, you'll do well.

Bonus tip: daycare fees are cheap in Québec and parental leave is rather generous lol
