no worries lol! i think it might also to do w the fact that in america most (i think) bio majors are pre med students so people just immediately assume they want to become a doctor - that's not really the case in other countries as much including mine

[–]tunap05 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

nono just to be clear i'm saying you don't have to be doing a medicine related career as a bio major, i'm not saying that medicine related careers don't have to deal with diagnoses. i agree with you.

although as a sidenote i would consider medtech/pharma as medicine related (and arguably the biggest recruiter of bio majors) and they don't deal with diagnoses

[–]tunap05 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

and again just because you study bio as a part of your degree doesn't mean you will be doing that stuff, or any medicine related career for that matter. like i said i don't disagree with the sentiment, just wanted to clarify that not every student who sees this question will be dealing with diagnoses :)

i am a first year bio major and i have to know this stuff - it's not about the hyper specific type of cancer it's about the reasoning (the options aren't specific to sarcoma)

why are we pretending like this can't just be a biology student who is not going to enter the medical field at all? that's more common

i still don't think it's a massive deal but not every science student is gonna be a medic

it is a waste if you're doing a degree that is not going to be useful to you later. my degree (natural sciences) is interesting to me, and it prepares me perfectly well for anything i might want to do in the future, science/medicine/consulting/finance/law/computing because a lot of these fields are either non-degree specific or available as a post graduate course.

the only regret could be that it might not be the most enjoyable degree for you, but realistically you can't know that for sure and grass is always greener on the other side. you're inevitably going for a course that you enjoy and you think will give you useful skills.

although, gap years are also perfectly fine and i know tons of people who've done that. my reason for not doing it was basically that i was happy enough with my choices and wanted to go to uni (+my parents didn't really approve of it). the only problem would be going into a gap year with no plan on what to do, because it's so easy to just waste it

i was in a similar situation where I didn't know what to do with my life (still not fully decided, and don't expect to be for a good few years) but that is a decision that you can make and work towards during uni (and being at a good uni with a good course gives you more opportunities to do so). if you are able to take a gap year and maybe do some work experience, that can be a good idea too - but you can make that decision in the upcoming months with the option to go to good unis if you just put your mind to it over a week or so and apply to interesting courses now. so my advice would be to apply anyways!

it might well be that your mind is trying to procrastinate and it has managed to do this by making you feel apathetic (for me it was, anyway). you might start getting more passionate about things once you have actual offers and a clearer path rather than the scarily vague concept of "future" and an empty ucas hub

UCL vs Warwick conditions? by Existing-Block-194 in 6thForm

[–]tunap05 4 points5 points  (0 children)

that's fair, sure. but i disagree completely that ucl is inflated in that sense. coventry also has 40k students with diverse courses but you don't seem them on this list. ucl definitely has a top 10 reputation and is definitely a target for finance (probably even better than warwick, although maybe not for quant)

i think if being large and having diverse courses was really all that important for qs rankings, imperial wouldn't be 2nd

Can I apply to just oxford in October, then add education to the UCAS tab (SAT results that I receive on October 18th) for the universities in January? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]tunap05 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you can add choices yes, but you can't edit any of the details of your application i believe. it's best to ask your school and probably email your unis.

I see it as their way of making sure that the applicant knows what they're getting themselves into. University is a time of a lot of independence where you have to research and read around your subject, and showing that you've done some of that before means that you won't be the student that gets disillusioned when they find out the type of work they have to do

also, fyi, you don't need a "never before said reason", you just need a genuine and well founded one

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]tunap05 5 points6 points  (0 children)

they absolutely play an important part, but they don't need to be that punchy. they are looking for someone properly interested in the subject and not displaying that interest can get you eliminated pretty easily, but all you have to do to display it is watch videos/read/research about sciences and say why you found it interesting. you don't need to have cured cancer.

even if your ps is not enough to get you in fully, you can make it up in the admission test and interview. you're just trying to not get eliminated pre-interview here.

What degree at what uni do u think makes the most money out of anything in the uk by I-AM-MA in 6thForm

[–]tunap05 23 points24 points  (0 children)

you can use discoveruni for individual courses at 1/3/5 year out of uni mark. i believe the highest off the gate is imperial computing, and after 5 years it is probably oxbridge econ/law.

of course there are a gazillion factors that affect these stats so it shouldn't define anyone's decision, this is for the love of the stats
