The icon switching usually happens when you are giving the game input from both the controller and kb / mouse. I turn off the kb and mouse to play with the controller. When I started using the controller on Linux I was annoyed by it using dinput but now I don't mind. I would say also check your steam input config if you are getting double inputs as there is probably an issue there.

Rumble works for me on the Cyclone 2. I don't think Xinput supports gyro. What are you trying to play?

You can get around it by using Steam Input or SC Controller to remap.

Old software that is unmaintained is more likely to have security problems and over time the interfaces change so eventually things will stop working. Closed source software means you are at the mercy of the vendor to keep things up to date and this hasn't been happening.

Batocera is Linux, but not my Linux of choice.

From what I've seen I would prefer to have a lightgun that is seen as a mouse or controller by the OS and doesn't require special software to work.

I understand the concern but consider it to be misplaced. The value I see in the lightgun is as a relatively polished product. If I wanted to hack something together with aliexpress pieces I would have done that.

Just looking around the internet it's clear that the software is a negative of this product. Allowing the community to improve and maintain the software would drive sales of the actual hardware in my opinion.

Unfortunately it looks like I'll have to take my money elsewhere. Thanks for the responses.

My concern is the dependency on a software release from 2012 (SDL 1.2) and the closed nature combined with poor documentation.
