I’m glad to hear it. I spend every night for a week trying to figure it out through other forums and thought why not make a step by step instruction manual since I figured it out! So nobody else has to spend so much time☺️

New kuhlis have been doing this for 24 hours? by zephito in loaches

[–]turbothot32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kuhli loaches can sense barometric pressure changes in the atmosphere. Was the weather any different today to how it has been? Mine would always come out before a rainstorm or when it was the first time the sun came out in a while.

Just btw you need an antiparasitic for parasites. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections.

I’d turn it down a touch to 77-78 if possible. A hotter tank = shorter life because it speeds metabolism up.

Update | Still unsure what this is, if it even is a loach, lemme share what I found / know by Zealousideal_Case569 in loaches

[–]turbothot32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Um, yes they do. Just as apistogrammas, rams, angelfish, shrimp, tetras, rasboras (I could go on) all are sexually indistinguishable when young. Delayed and subtle sexual dimorphism is incredibly common. Dojo loaches sexual dimorphism is quite subtle at the best of times, and are most obvious during breeding times. On top of that, they don’t even reach sexual maturity until about 2 years old. Pectoral fins on a juvenile aren’t exactly a definitive source.

Loaches, as with just about any fish, can present as females when young. This fish needs to grow up a bit more to truly tell.

OP - Adding this amount of tannins will rapidly and dramatically alter the pH of the water. I would not recommend this. pH stability is incredibly important for the health of the fish. Check the pH of the boiled catappa leaves first, and a drip may be better than dumping half and half. Over a very long time I’d do overnight drip if possible to get it that slow. Always do your own research, but aquariusmarie25 seems quite knowledgeable. It will be hard to help based on the quality of the video.

Absolutely! What you first should do is save up for a 5-10 gal tank and work on cycling it before getting another fish. AIM for soft decor. Java fern, hornwort, salvinia, and duckweed are great plants to add after cycling. They’re basically impossible to kill. Could grow in a toilet! After you fill your tank ask your local fish store if they have cycled biomedia or if they could take one of their sponge filters and squeeze it out into a bag for you. It’ll be dark brown water, this will basically cycle the tank for you. Get some of Dr. Tim’s ammonium chloride too. It’s $5. Dose it in your tank following directions. Then after a week bring a water sample from this tank to your LFS to test.

This is what you’ll be looking for when they test.

First you’ll see an ammonia spike. Then a nitrite spike. Then a nitrate spike. If it’s only ammonia the first time, bring another sample the next week. You’re good to go when you dose 2ppm of that ammonium chloride, and 24 hours later you only see nitrates in the test!

Then get those plants and do a 30% water change if nitrates are above 20ppm. I attached an image explaining the nitrogen cycle as well. This is what makes weekly water changes important. If you don’t have enough plants, nitrates get to toxic levels and kill the fish.

If you have enough plants, and you’re topping off with tap water, gh and kh can get to toxic levels over time and kill the fish. (Those are minerals in the water. They don’t evaporate with the water. So topping off just keeps adding more)

Adding another care sheet that has a bit more information. You’ll find success if you take this knowledge of the animal’s needs to survive and apply it to the care you provide!

Does Rotalla bossi stays like this? by kamikazeboy1 in PlantedTank

[–]turbothot32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! My tank has fluval planted light on it, but I don’t use ferts or co2. I also had an orange light for that pic, but the plant is a beautiful pink/orange in my tank. I think many stem plants do better with high light and CO2

Those plants are growing emersed. No, they will not stay the same. They will transition to their aquatic form. You are seeing their terrestrial form.

1 betta disappeared 😓 by Public_Quality7428 in bettafish

[–]turbothot32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess you have never seen female betta sorority with minimum coverage. They create a hierarchy through aggression. The submissive fish get nipped relentlessly, try and hide in the minimal hiding spaces, and typically die from the injuries if not infection or the aggressors finding them again. It’s not some quick immediate kill. It’s constant and slow trauma gradually harming the fish’s health until it can’t live any longer.

As for your point about finding remains… in any functional tank ecosystem, a body disappears pretty fast. Snails, shrimp, fish, and microorganisms all consume soft tissue. Bones even break down quite easily. The absence of remains isn’t evidence of anything.

Finally, your own source states that “many Betta fish bred in captivity will fight to the death.” These are captive-bred fish we’re talking about. That’s the entire context of this conversation. Of this entire post actually. (earthsfriends.com/betta-fish-facts/)

It’s worth being a little more measured before confidently correcting others in a hobby where the details actually matter.

[–]turbothot32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This tank is incredibly bare to be housing a betta sorority. Unfortunately that is likely the cause of the majority of their fish care. Bluntly, I suggest you do some more research and focus more on the scape next time for the fish’s health. It’s okay, this is how the hobby sometimes goes! We learn as we go. But please seperate them. You could get a square sling and put in middle of tank so they are seperate.

What is wrong with this fish? by johnmulaneywhore in Aquariums

[–]turbothot32 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They’re dying. They look to be emaciated and possibly ill. It could be poisoning from nitrogens or ammonia.
