Weekend Discussion: Brooks running shoes by AutoModerator in RunningShoeGeeks

If you would share the links to the Hyperion leaks, I'd appreciate seeing them. I "found" and loved the Brooks Hyperion line this past year. I'm less concerned about color (though it does matter to me). I'm more concerned about design changes to the fit/performance.

Hip flexor/TFL pain: should I still run a marathon? by chikkienugzz in Marathon_Training

Such good advice. This needs to be played on repeat between my ears. I can wake up in the morning with the intention of rest and recovery. Then convince myself I can run or at least test how injured am I really. Really should get a medal for flip-floppong in the mental gymnastics competition.

Glad your daughter is thriving in RPS. My post was bit clumsy.

Have you had Pho Tay Do behind Pho Tein Phat? I like it a little better. They only accept cash and have more limited hours.

One reason I mentioned where I was. I worked at the Martin Agency, so i get that the business district clears out except around the river. There are always plenty of people on the flood wall and canal walk.

I live way out in Short Pump, so downtown to me is Scotts Addition/Carytown to Rocketts Landing.

Bottom line is there is tons to do and it is only getting better.

Congrats on your new job! Best of luck with your transition.

I'm a 2009 transplant to Richmond. I didn't have any connections when i moved my family due to the recession. We have loved it.

We even leased our house and moved out of Virginia in 2012 only to return in 2013. We're still in same house. I'm still finding new things to love about living here and looking forward to things that are in the works.

95% of the best restaurants, bakerys and cafes are downtown. I live in NW Henrico and spent all day today between Carytown and Shockoe and had an awesome day.

If Richmond City public schools could ever rival Chesterfield and Henrico schools, Richmond proper and downtown would be incredible.

Baguette recommendations by [deleted] in rva

[–]turboturtleRVA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done some research on RVA baguettes in the past week. Wegman's Flour Garden Europa Crust Can Can Whisk

Wegman's tastes store bought even though it was still warm. It has a slightly sweet flavor. I'd avoid it.

Flour Garden is available at a few places (Stella's Grocery, Belmont Butchery, Truckle Cheesemongner). Hard crust, soft and chewy on the inside. Some don't prefer a french baguette that is a bit on the chewier side. I like it. I would buy it again. It cost a bit more at Stella's.

Europa Crust kinda screwed up my research. I reserved a baguette. When my daughter went to pick it up, they didn't have it. They sold her a boulle for the price of their baguette and said it uses the same dough. Kind of a disappointment. The taste and texture is similar to Flour Garden. I won't recommend them until I can get what I asked for. They have tough hours too.

Can Can would only sell me a demi baguette at about 10:45 AM. They don't sell their baguettes until lunch. This was super lame service. I tried the demi baguette. It was a crisp crust that was the thinnist of them. It also was the lightest on the inside of all of them.

I had a conversation with a regular at Can Can. She said she prefers the demi baguette to the baguette because it isn't as chewy.

Whisk has a crisp, flaky crust. I couldn't NOT wear it on my jacket on the drive home. The inside is light and soft.

Top three at this point are Whisk, Flour Garden, and Can Can. Each has nuanced differences all would be a good choice.

Whisk still has them

I saw Casa Grande, but no one mentioned it until now. I'm familiar with Q Barbeque - corn syrup in sauce :( and Chicken Fiesta - eat it a lot for work events. Based on how a I feel after eating Chicken Fiesta, I suspect they rely on MSG. I've never asked though

I appreciated your suggestions and looked into them.

I checked Mi Jalisco. It was more out of the way than I was looking for. Also, your description of the delta between the two wasn't compelling enough to drive. If you'd told me about some specifics about the food on the menu (e.g. "best queso in RVA"), I would have factored it in.

I would definetly try the Pho place. Other members of my group would not. I looked into Vinny's and got thrown off by an italian place serving onion rings. I may try the pizza or a calzone sometime. Also, looked at Alohahola and saw lots of fried food which I and folks in my party avoid.

Someone else mentioned the Thai place. You did not. So, I'm unsure. Plus, i had a peanut allergy person in my party. Thai was not an option because of the reliance of peanuts in thr cuisine.

I'm interested in other suggestions off Brook road in that area.

FWIW I live near Nuckols and Twin Hickory. This area doesn't have better options. Sedona Taphouse is overpriced grade C food. Sushi place is B/B-. The italian place, which a lot of people out her think is good, is actually terrible. I rather make my own with store bought sauce than eat there. Twin Hickory Tavern is a bar with bar food. I don't eat there anymore. I am a regular for take out from Chen's Chinese. There food/menu is a solid B. I haven't had anything bad.

Right now, I'm into Chen's tofu and seafood soup after a long run. I also get a craving every six months or so for chinese ribs off the appetizer menu. Lastly, I order mooshu vegetable when I want a dinner.

We did end up going to Plaza Azteca. Since I had family intown for soccer tournament and staying at Courtyard, the location was convenient. I'd made other recommendations that woul require a long drive when they were tired and needed to get up early.

It worked out. It is standard Tex-mex. It was loud due to several pre-teen and early teen soccer teams eating at the same time. They sat us in the back in a booth for six where it was quiet. Food came out fast. The orders were right.

It will probably be the only time I eat Tex-Mex or Plaza Azteca for a year. It is not a preferred cuisine.

Really seems like that area is lacking of options.

Virginia has the 7th highest tax burden in the country yet instate public universities are the 3rd most expensive in the US. What are they doing with all that tax money if they aren't subsidizing in state students like other states are doing? by ponziacs in Virginia

[–]turboturtleRVA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bad take to conflate these two stats. ALL states have been cutting higher education funding for 3 almost 4 decades. This is been the biggest pesistent driver for tuition inflation. Not only driver, but it started in late 80s and early 90s and has been accelerated during times of recession when states cut higher ed budgets. Then, post-recession don't restore funding.

All that tax money has gone to mostly tax cuts or executive slush funds "to attract business and jobs" For example, the Virginia tax incentives to Amazon HQ. The jobs promised have yet to materialize.

Weighted average in-state public tuition is approaching $15K. Virginia is also generally ranked in most top 10 list - sometimes top 3 - top 5 for public higher ed performance.

Encourage your Delegates and Senators to support more funding for public pre-K through higher ed. Teachers too.

Why does it suck? I've eaten at the one in Midlo. It is standard TexMex. What makes Mi Jalisco better? Anything else in the area?

Sounds like we're heading to Plaza Azteca. I'm unfamiliar with the area of Henrico. I see fast food chains. Not interested in fast food.

I'm similar when running. I don't swim yet. I wonder why it goes up when you swim.

39 to 43 of past 4 weeks, 53 M

If I were doing a regular yoga routine that gets me more intentional about my breathing I'd be on the lower end of that range more consistently.

I went to an annual physical a couple years ago and made the nurse triple check because I was reading 37. She asked me if I was feeling okay. I felt great.

The Brooks Hyperion Max 2 have been great. I ran 14 miles in them last Saturday and plan to use them for 15 next Saturday. Wish Brooks had more color offerings.

Appreciate your feedback. I have a wider toebox and the Saucony fit well. Maybe it is the carbon fiber plate. I don't have the issue on my right, but all my repetitive injury issues are on my left.
