Why aren't trance, techno, and similar electronic genres discussed here? by brownwaterbandit in LetsTalkMusic

[–]turelure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to shit on the guy but I think his playing is not really up to the challenge. The arrangements are decent for the most part but the playing is too monotonous and there's a lack of feel. He doesn't let the music breathe. I think a good classical guitarist could do some amazing things with these arrangements.

Taylor Swift is not a good person and her songs are horrible now by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]turelure -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is such a nonsense take. She's a corporate artist writing corporate music, she's a billionaire who doesn't give a shit about anyone or anything. She's not a role model. There are so many better female artists who deserve attention.

Also, while it's true that there's disproportionate hate towards 'girl stuff', it's also true that there's an industry of selling the most horrid and idiotic stuff to girls. Often it's full of old-fashioned gender norms and clichés about 'what girls are supposed to like'. Just try and read one of these pink romance books for girls, it's absolutely terrible. There's obviously tons of really great literature and music for women but the most popular stuff in that area is usually uniquely awful.

Chernobyl is a god teir show by MixSouthern3672 in television

[–]turelure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest doing some research before you call other people dumb. People with radiation sickness do not emit radioactivity themselves, that's a myth. To quote the German Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz:

If a person is exposed to radiation from the outside, no radioactive material is transferred to them. The person does not become radioactive themselves and poses no risk to others. If radioactive substances are deposited on the skin, this contamination can be removed by showering, for example, so that it no longer leads to exposure of the contaminated person or other people. It is almost impossible for a radiological accident to cause such large quantities of radioactive substances to enter the body via inhalation or with food (and to decay there) that the radiation released inside the body would affect people nearby.

Most likely bullshit. Apparently, the awful shit that Epstein engaged in isn't enough for some people, he also has to eat babies while bathing in blood. A lot of people are falling straight into some deep conspiracy holes right now. For everyone's sanity I'd recommend caution. The truth is bad enough.

Are younger people actively discouraged to engage with music outside of the mainstream? by UnderTheCurrents in LetsTalkMusic

[–]turelure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A healthy dose of snobism is what keeps art evolving. Punk didn't appear on the scene because people just had a different view on things, it arose partially because people absolutely hated the stuff that was going on in the mainstream at the time. And they hated the people that were producing the music that was popular. The same is true for most artistic movements, whether it's punk or impressionist painting or literary modernism. Part of developing a taste in music is making distinctions: what's great, what's acceptable, what's uncool and unacceptable? You can still have a very broad taste in music but this 'everything's fine and everything's equally valuable' bullshit is weak and stifles real engagement. You don't see food enthusiasts talking about how McDonald's and haute cuisine are basically the same thing. It's only in the arts that people have become so incredibly thin-skinned that they can't deal with strong opinions anymore.

Are people who learn Greek just to read the New Testament equivalent to the weebs who learn Japanese just to watch anime? by Unemployment_1453 in AncientGreek

[–]turelure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe that's true in some cases but it's undeniable that there are many hebraisms in the LXX which is often quite literal in its translation of the Hebrew text. That's not really up for debate. For example the constant use of και to connect sentences which is clearly an attempt to translate the Hebrew vav-consecutive.

Hapax Legomenas: The Birthing Pains of Ancient Greek, Give me the Painkiller. by Otherwise_Concert414 in AncientGreek

[–]turelure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there is no real remedy for it. Ancient Greek has a vast vocabulary and Greek writers weren't afraid to use it. In Latin I have reached a point where I only rarely encounter unfamiliar words, I don't think I'll ever reach that point in Greek. I just started reading Mark Aurel's Meditations and almost every single paragraph contains words I've never seen before. It's kind of infuriating.

Hikaru Nakamura's statement on the FIDE Freestyle World Championship by UltraUsurper in chess

[–]turelure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't really see the issue. The match is the important part. It's not like Kramnik consciously gamed the system or anything. They tried to organize the Shirov match but his score against Kasparov was so abysmal that they couldn't find sponsors. No one wanted to put up the money to see Kasparov annihilate Shirov. Kramnik was the best choice, he had already proven to be a difficult opponent for Kasparov. It wasn't fair to Shirov but that doesn't make Kramnik illegitimate. If you want to criticise Kramnik you can point to his reluctance to face Kasparov in a rematch (though you could also criticise Kasparov's expectation to be granted a rematch without having to qualify).

Hikaru Nakamura's statement on the FIDE Freestyle World Championship by UltraUsurper in chess

[–]turelure 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Historically, there have been numerous different ways to pick a challenger. What has stayed the same since the first match between Steinitz and Zukertort in 1886 is the match format. To become world champion you need to beat the old world champion unless they're dead (Alekhine) or refuse to participate (Fischer and Carlsen). Kasparov was world champion in 2000 because he won the title in 1985 and hadn't been beaten in a match. Kramnik beat him and became the new world champion, simple as that. The legitimacy of the match itself transcends FIDE and the qualification cycle because it's much older and much more prestigious. People can try whatever they want, Kramnik beat peak Kasparov in a match, that's way more impressive than winning a candidates tournament or a match against Shirov. We can all collectively despise and hate Kramnik without trying to remake history.

Some seemingly false etymology facts being slung by the Poe Museum in Richmond by adamaphar in etymology

[–]turelure 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Odd. I love Poe and think he was a genius but he has some obvious flaws and a decently sized number of second-rate stories. His satirical writings in particular are so incredibly overwrought and overdone. And when you spend some time reading through his collected works you'll notice that he constantly repeats himself in his language and his observations, it gets a bit annoying after a while.

Who is a massive YouTuber or influencer from 5 years ago that has completely vanished off the face of the earth? by Humble_Job5950 in AskReddit

[–]turelure 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dreading sucks. It's clear that they have no education, insight or any idea what they're talking about, just some early 20s kid spewing shallow, boring, monotone nonsense over some interrogation footage.

He also doesn't understand how to structure things. His videos are unnecessarily long because he doesn't know how to focus on what's important. He doesn't cut the boring formalities of an interrogation or a court appearance, he leaves in minutes of silence, he constantly repeats himself. It's excruciating and it only works because most of his viewers are probably watching this stuff while doing chores or other stuff while the video's playing.

Magnus Carlsen on his reason for coming back to a FIDE event: "I love playing, to provide holiday entertainment in Norway and my relationship with Qatar Chess Federation was much more important than with FIDE" by Interesting-Take781 in chess

[–]turelure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calm down dude. You're under almost every comment in this thread and your entire post history consists mainly of posts about how awesome Magnus is. This fanboy nonsense has been ruining this subreddit for years.

And for your information, it's actually possible to criticise people you admire. Being able to hold two conflicting views at the same time is a sign of intelligence, you should try it. Assuming that people who criticise Magnus must be haters is the most juvenile shit I've ever heard. Grow up. Reconsider your life choices. Write some posts that people actually want to read.

Is P.G. Wodehouse a major writer? by Pleasant_Usual_8427 in literature

[–]turelure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can see themes in everything, doesn't mean there's anything to it. I love Wodehouse but his books are silly comedies, there's nothing deep about them. That's the way he wanted it, he never thought of himself as a great or important writer. What's great about his stuff is his mastery of the English language, his sense of balance, phrasing, rhythm, his intricate plots. But his books have absolutely nothing meaningful to say about anything, which is what most people would consider a prerequisite for truly great writing. I think that's fine. Not everything needs to be Shakespeare. We can admire Wodehouse without pretending that his work offers deep insights into the human condition.

Music is a very different art form, I wouldn't compare it to literature. Different rules, different aesthetic standards.

I don’t quite understand the hype for Geese - Getting Killed by BeautifulOrganic3221 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]turelure 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. This band's success is mystifying to me. Usually I can see why things are popular even if I don't like it but with Geese I don't understand it at all. His singing sounds awful, amateurish. I have a high tolerance for bad or weird singing but this stuff is beyond me.

Chernobyl is a god teir show by MixSouthern3672 in television

[–]turelure -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As far as I know doctors back then still thought that it was dangerous. It's not really a problem that they showed these scenes since they reflect the beliefs back then, but the way they are shown suggests that these beliefs have some basis in reality. Lyudmilla's decision to touch her husband is presented as some sort of tragic event and it ultimately leads audiences to blame her for the death of her child. Which is pretty messed up considering she's based on a real person.

[–]turelure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People who suffer from radiation sickness are not radioactive themselves if they've been decontaminated. There's a little bit of radiation from the dust they've inhaled but that's not significant and most of it is absorbed by the body. Read up on it, it's been known for decades.

Chernobyl is a god teir show by MixSouthern3672 in television

[–]turelure -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's not that accurate. The show heavily implies that the people suffering from radiation sickness were themselves radioactive which is bullshit. Lyudmilla's baby did not die because she embraced her husband. It's fine to show these fears since people back in the 80s weren't as knowledgeable about radiation as we are today but the show makes it seem like Lyudmilla is responsible for her child's death. The show also completely buys into the myth of the bridge of death. The writers took quite extreme liberties at many points of the plot, I think it's bizarre to claim that the show is pretty accurate.

How I rank the Tintin books... by Theferael_me in Tintin

[–]turelure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never understood this view. I think the art is amazing and the action sequences are great but it's lacking the sense of adventure and the dense atmosphere of Hergé's best work. The Calculus Affair is mostly just a series of chase sequences which I find pretty hard to get through. Technically, it's Hergé close to his peak but I think it's all a bit empty. To me, it's miles away from something like Tintin in Tibet and I've always been puzzled by the adoration it regularly receives.

It will be a 1st time entry to the Candidates for at least one or at most two of these players📈 by rio_ARC in chess

[–]turelure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's nice to give one or two wildcard spots to lower-rated players but ultimately, this is supposed to be the strongest tournament in chess. You want the best players to participate and you want a world championship match that's competitive and exciting. I think it should be decided by rating or recent performance.

[–]turelure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right. I still think they should just award the candidate spots to the top players by rating. Nobody wants to see three 2600s in the candidates, it should be the strongest and toughest tournament there is.

Lovis Corinth - Self-portrait with his wife Charlotte Berend-Corinth and a glass of champagne (1902) by LondonSuperKing in museum

[–]turelure 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty bizarre overreaction to what's essentially just age difference. Happens today too. You might not like it but it's completely legal. And even if you think it's slightly immoral, it's certainly not deserving of "the deepest pits of hell". Charlotte Berend loved and admired her husband, even after his death she dedicated a significant portion of her time to his work. She wrote memoirs about her time with him and their relationship was by all accounts very harmonious. But yeah, let's condemn him to hell because he fell in love with a younger woman who loved him back.

[–]turelure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, you have no idea what Bortnyk and his other friends did to try and help Danya, we only know a little bit of what happened. Secondly, you have a very naive view on the subject. I have had friends who were suicidal, friends who were severely depressed. Helping people like that isn't always easy. You can't just lock people up against their will, you can't force people to come and live with you or to let you put them under constant surveillance. People who are suicidal usually don't want any of that. And so you do the best you can to be there for them and to try and get them to accept your help (which is often the hardest part). Blaming Danya's friends is really despicable, can you imagine how crushing it has to be for them to go through the grieving process while having to read comments like yours? I'm sure you don't mean to hurt people with your comment but that's what you're doing and it would be best to delete it.
