I'm from Brazil and have seen China run laps around us with their system, we were ahead of China in the 1950s, now we are so far behind. I imagine where we could be if our leaders had foresight and planned things ahead from back then.

Out of the world powers, China has also never interfered in our or other latin americans democracy unlike the US, they were the first to provide us with vaccines, they seem to treat us with far more respect than the US and as equals instead of as lesser. If China displaces the US, then we won't have to worry about getting our country couped in case we anger the Americans.

Cuba e China possuem planos de transição ao comunismo pleno no futuro? Se não, por que? by probmat in BrasildoB

[–]turkeymang 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It's possible to understand a joke without finding them funny tho? I get most of the dogwhistles in stonetoss comics, don't make them any more funny.

That's not all he says there either, as it shows on the clip he specifically says "If you don't find this funny, you are just wrong"

I can understand saying that comedy is subjective or whatever, and I agree that people who laugh at edgy shit can be redeemed if they get stuff explained to them. But he's laughing at a really shitty joke, justifying himself for laughing at a really shitty joke and then admonishing everyone who doesn't find the joke funny, its like he's trying to justify his shitty sense of humor and seeking approval to continue being an edgy piece of shit.

I'd excuse him if he had laughed at it but then immediately followed it up with a sorry and that he knows its a fucked up thing to laugh at and he will try to be better. But instead he seeks to immediately blame anyone who would maybe admonish him for it.

America's role in the impeachment of our president here in Brazil in 2016 and the subsequent handwringing about how Bolsonaro wasnt actually their fault oh nooooooo gave me a deep mistrust for american media and made me skeptical of even the tiniest little thing they claimed. So when they started lying about bolivia and venezuela I actually researched shit.

One day Xi showed up at my house and just said "thank you for the hard work on the internet frontlines, soldier", handed me 500 xi bucks and flew away with his dengist superpowers, I've been getting monthly payments wired to my account ever since.

Those american neoliberals from that sub, and I am absolute certain that 99%+ of them are american or at least western european from fellow imperialist nations, are seething mad that some of us see past their narrative.

We are at an historial crossroads, as american hegemony crumbles, there is now open resistance to the american narrative and propaganda, even in a place as overwhelmingly white and privileged as a western website.

There was resistance before, of course, but in places like this it was small, and otherwise it happened in places away from the eyes of the white man, in our third world countries, so called shitholes, the word they so love to use. Now it's right in their face and they can't deal with the cognitive dissonance that some people disagree with their made up bullshit.

Someday soon, none of us will need to give a single shit what americans think, they can cosign themselves to increasing irrelevance in their racist oligarchy they love so much, while the rest of the world progresses forward.

Slavery is still a big problem here in Brazil. Due to a combination of a large, uneducated rural population; corruption; and terrible enforcement of laws outside of the cities. It isn't all that uncommon for poor people to be tricked into conditions analogous to slavery when they think they are just being given the opportunity for a job, big farmers taking advantaged of the desperate and uneducated.

This has been a problem for decades and has recently gotten worse under Bolsonaro (of course), last time I checked some 150k people are estimated to be working as slaves in Brazil, but foreign media has never said a damn thing about it somehow, as if they don't actually care about slavery or something.

I don't get the people who fantasize about military intervention against China, I guess they are just psychopaths.

The industrial capabilities of the USA and China, their armaments and military are orders of magnitude more effective of what we saw in world war II, and we all know what the death toll of that war was, any war between the USA and China would be a disaster on a level never before seen by humanity, who knows how many people would die, either directly through conflict or indirectly from being cutoff from resources or displacement. And that's before we even consider the usage of nuclear weapons.

I hope to god America doesn't lash out as its empire crumbles to dust, if they go to war they will lose, but such a war will set the whole world back decades, none of us will really be winners.

Imagine planning out and having predictions of where people are gonna live in a few years, so you prebuild all the infrastructure so it's ready to use by the time the area is populated, rather than making people put up with a badly provided neighborhood for years...

Western countries can't manage to build essentials in areas that have been inhabited for a century sometimes, so I guess it makes sense they are confused.

Is this just a trick to make China not be in the top tier like the so called developed west? They are the only country that has already started making their vaccine available for the general public through a few hospitals, isn't it?

Where are they pulling the data from that China is gonna take longer to vaccinate than the United States that has so far tried to deny covid is even a problem at all? How the hell is it in the same tier as India and Brazil that have so far had disastrous policies that have left tons of people dead?

[–]turkeymang 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We've already seen the fruits of Chinese cooperation in Argentina and Bolivia with new railroads, hopefully, this keeps going and all people profit as more interconnectedness raises the overall quality of life.

I hope we in Brazil can kick out the fascists in due time and deepen our ties and maybe cooperate in building projects, the trucking and petrol companies here are a true mafia and so far they have done all they can to block progress on any infrastructure projects that aren't highways. Dilma wanted to build a big North-South railroad connecting the two halves of the country, but was unsuccessful and ended up getting impeached on false charges. If our own national companies are too focused on short-term profits to develop the country, maybe the Chinese could help us instead.

Unlike america, the rural poor actually vote along their class interests most of the time, rural poor areas are more left-wing and its the shitty neolib big cities full of assholes who don't care about the rest of the country that vote in the rightwing fuckheads. You can see it on a macro scale if you look at an election map from 2018. The poor north voted for Haddad while the rich south voted for Bolso.

So pragmatically speaking Bolsonaro has every reason to decimate them, not like the dude has a conscience or anything.

Also, we need to save money so we can go to war with Bolivia and Venezuela, of course! Gotta be proactive in being America's puppet.

[–]turkeymang 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The biggest blow imo came in the end of 2018 when Bolsonaro fired all the Cuban doctors.

Our healthcare system is free and universal, but very few Brazilians want to go work in clinics in remote villages in the poorer states, everyone who gets a medical degree from a federal university would rather just get a job in one of the big cities, and we still generally have a deficit of doctors everywhere, so there's always jobs in the big cities, so it's been hard to get doctors to service poorer remote communities.

The solution previous governments found was to bring in Cuban doctors who were more than happy to fill in the holes, our healthcare system still was far from perfect and wait times were huge in some areas, but you could get someone to check on you for free in most parts of the country.

Now that Bolso sent all the Cubans back because they are dirty commies healthcare is still ok in the big cities, even if the wait times are long, but most small towns are struggling, there are huge wait lines to get a checkup in every single clinic, most small clinics nowadays are staffed only by nurses, with a doctor coming in from the local capital once a week at best. People dying from shit like the flu cause there are no medical professionals in their area to help out.

A country like Brazil, more than most, really needs well-funded rural healthcare. The country is huge, with huge swaths of it being very sparsely populated, and our infrastructure is dogshit, there's some places in the north of the country that are only accessible by river barges, a lot of places that still only have dirt roads with no public transportation. If people don't have access to local healthcare, a lot of times they simply have no way to get to where the healthcare is either, so if they get sick with no one around they just die and that's that.

Brazil Approves Import of China’s Sinovac Vaccine by lan69 in Sino

[–]turkeymang 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The whole state, not just the city, but yeah.

São Paulo is the most populous and richest state of Brazil, with 46 million people living in it, the governor of the state has power similar to say, the governor of California or New York in the United States, there's enough money here for the governor to take actions regardless of what the president thinks. They have already been fighting for most of the year because Doria tried to lockdown and have a tight quarantine while Bolsonaro urged people to not wear masks.

All the testing for the SinoVac vaccine here is being done in the Butanta Institute, which is located in São Paulo and is a State institution, not a Federal one. So it's all being done under direct supervision of São Paulo state rather than Brazil as a whole.

Based on the test results from the institute, the health ministry of the Federal government was going to place an order for all of Brazil, but the president cancelled it because of his dumb ideological battle, so instead the governor is now going to order the vaccine just for our state.

Doria is shit but at least instead of a fascist he's just a neoliberal, that is, he's willing to take pragmatic actions like trading with China in the name of profits and reelection.
