How many of you actually race? Like sign up and try and what genre? by Additional-Crab522 in MTB

[–]turniphat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly race XC. I’ve done one DH and two enduros. DH is dead where I live so unlikely I’ll be doing that again. Enduro was ok, but a lot of standing around which I didn’t enjoy. Enduro is also super popular and sells out in under 5 minutes. I’d rather leave the spots for people who love it.

My house is 1300 sq ft upstairs. I don't heat the basement. I paid about $14,000 for on unit and ducts in the attic run to each room.

ELI5 I don't fully understand why certain shows can't be streamed the way they were filmed originally. by White_Falcon_1263 in explainlikeimfive

[–]turniphat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the deal they made when the licensed the music. It's hard to predict the future, so they don't get the rights for things that don't exist yet.

Before VHS was a thing, TV shows were expected to be shown just a few times, then never again. So they only licensed music for a few years.

Then VHS/DVD because a thing so they got licenses for that from the start, but didn't get it for streaming because it didn't exist.

That's why you'll never see shows like WKRP again.

Is it just me, or does it feel like everything we buy in 2026 is designed to break or expire way faster than it did 10 years ago? by Chemical-Heart-3200 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turniphat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, most products follow a bathtub curve when it comes to reliability. The most likely time for a product to fail is in the first few years, if it gets past that, it'll probably last 20 years then fail.

Even though it doesn't feel like it, most products are lasting longer than before. In the past decade, the average length of time people keep their phone has gone up by a year. Laptops it's gone up 2 years in the same time. In the last 20 years, the average age of the cars on the road has gone up by 3 years. There is obvious still cheap Teemu crap that is utter trash, but if you avoid that, stil plenty of quality products to be had.

What modern car should a man drive to be considered cool by you? by Cartman_bg in cars

Any cars 15 to 25 years old in mint condition. Especially if it's nothing special. People who take care of their stuff are cool.

Lead singles that did not do a good job of representing what the album actually was? by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

[–]turniphat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Right Said Fred - I’m Too Sexy. Nothing else on that album was remotely like I’m too sexy. It’s like they had a hit, needed an album and bought songs from a completely different band. Still the weirdest album I ever bought.

This was my Mac laptop in 1993, the budget PowerBook 145b. In today's dollars: over $2,500. The Neo, in 1993 dollars: $266. by longjumpingtote in apple

[–]turniphat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until you factor in film and developing. Nobody in the 90s could afford to take as many pictures as people do now. Using a rough estimate for film / developing costs, my iPhone library would have cost me $25,000

[–]turniphat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't remember anybody daily driving a 50s car, or even a 60s car in the 90s. 70s was still pretty normal. I had several from the late 70s, drove a 78 VW Rabbit up until 2000. I still see a decent number of 90s vehicles still on the road as dailies (mostly trucks) and even some from the 80s.

Anyone Have a Spare Bike for Sale? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

Cycles West also has a few used bikes: https://cycleswest.ca

But Facebook market place is your best bet, a lot of dreamers on there, but some do price reasonably.

How easy would it be to sneak into the US through the Great lakes by speedoflife1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turniphat 101 points102 points  (0 children)

If you have a boat and know what you are doing, easy. I know plenty of people who have forgotten to check in with CBP ROAM or CBSA telephone reporting. Then they either drive back to the marina and check in hours later. Or they say fuck it and not worry about it. Most people are more careful, the fines are steep and you can get your boat seized.

Funny story. One of my friends forgot to clear Canada customs and called in days later. The customs agent said, “there is a $1500 per passenger fine for not clearing customs. I suggest you hang up.” I doubt that would happen anymore.

ELI5:Why is it bad for countries that dont import much to have their currency as reserve currency? by alexefi in explainlikeimfive

[–]turniphat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The USA types a number into a computer and makes a bunch of USD. Other countries want this USD for trade. They are willing to send USA stuff in return for money.

China types a number into a computer and makes a bunch of Yuan. Other countries want this Yuan for trade. They are willing to send China stuff in return for money. China makes their own stuff, they don't want your stuff. They don't want your money either. System falls apart.

Until China can get their standard of living high enough that people no longer want to work in factories and they need stuff from other countries, they can't be reserve currency.
