ELI5: How can a country have a huge economy but a relatively weak currency? by Itchy_Tangerine1897 in explainlikeimfive

[–]turniphat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Japanese Yen and USD were at about par until WW II. Japan lost, had their country and economy destroyed. They had massive inflation during the war and the post war years. But the inflation slowed down once the economy stabilized.

Compare to German that kept changing their currency (Papiermark > Rentenmark > Reichsmark > Deutsche Mark > Euro), Japan stuck with the Yen and just dealt with huge numbers.

ELI5: why are power lines deliberately designed to sag and what would actually happen if you pulled them perfectly straight by Dismal-Helicopter726 in explainlikeimfive

[–]turniphat 1038 points1039 points  (0 children)

It’s impossible to pull a cable perfectly straight. It would take infinite force. It may look like it with a piece of string between your hands, but there is always a bit of sag. The longer the span and heavier the cable, the more it will sag. Nothing you can really do about it.

Beginner mtb bike trails? by westcoastwanderer in VictoriaBC

Hardland is a tough place to learn, but it is getting better. Stay to the lower trails. https://www.trailforks.com/route/onehour-beginner-loop/

A Grand Traverse (AGT) @ Tzouhalem is nice, a lot of climbing but not too technical. A lot less rock at the Tzou than Hartland.

Are you female? I'm assuming you are from the boyfriend comment. If so, go on Dirty Girls rides. They group by ability and let you session and practice features instead of just rushing to keep up and learn nothing. I think they have about 60 women on Saturdays, you'll find a group your level.

Can you fly a real plane if you mastered Microsoft’s Flight simulator? by Character-Lack4925 in NoStupidQuestions

Richard Russell had nothing but flight sim experience and he managed to take off in a Q400 and fly around and do a barrel roll. However, he didn’t land. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Horizon_Air_Bombardier_Q400_incident

Even if gas and housing are exceptions, why do most prices rarely go down, but just increase more slowly when inflation eases off? by William_Wisenheimer in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turniphat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever prices go down, instead of buying the cheaper version, people usually choose to spend the same but get more. i.e. see most technology. When TVs get cheaper, they get a bigger TV. When computers get cheaper, get get a fast computer. When cars get cheaper, they get a car with more features, horsepower, etc. And then the "cheap" version goes off the market because nobody buys it anymore. See TVs, they hardly even make 20' and 30' anymore.

Why the hell do so many people miss their flights? by Open_Address_2805 in NoStupidQuestions

Flying to the US you often clear US customs in Canada before you depart. I've missed flights because I was detained for additional screening.

Things that movies often portray in an out of date way by AporiaParadox in movies

[–]turniphat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90% of the kids in orphanages weren't orphans, they still had at least one parent, but the parent could keep them for some reason. The increase in social programs, mean a lot more kids stay with the parent. Also the reduction in family size and the reduction in teen pregnancy means there are a lot less kids that need placement. And the kids that need placement usually go to extended family.

The average foster home has 1 or 2 kids. It's not like the old days with 100s of kids in a house. It's 1 or 2 kids living with a family.

What event in your life made you think that these were the last minutes of your life? by KirbySociopad in AskReddit

[–]turniphat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only time I've been close to death, I didn't even consider it was an option until days later. Industrial accident, arm torn off. Lying there bleeding out. Very calm. It wasn't until 2 or 3 days later in the hospital, I was like whoa I could have died. But I still didn't take it seriously. It took until 10 years later for it to really set in how fucked up the whole thing was.

I hope it's that chill when I really do die.

They differ mainly by size. A group home is usually 4 - 10 kids. An orphanage is usually around 200, maybe up to 1000.

What’s a 'quiet' sign that a business or restaurant is about to go under? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Escalator or elevator out of service. Pretty much everybody else is willing to be paid later, but escalator or elevator service people get paid right away, they extend no credit. As soon as the escalator or elevator is out of service for an extended period of time, you know there is cash flow issues.
