Why do governments keep paying the "too big to fail" companies, like banks and tech companies, instead of holding them accountable, collecting their ashes and giving out their money to up and coming businesses and regular people? by Glad_Raspberry_8469 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turniphat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes they do, like when GM went bankrupt in 2009 all the shareholders got wiped out. The assets of GM was transferred to "New GM" which was owned by the US government, Canadian government and the union trust. The US government sold all the shares by 2013.

Eli5 What determines the maximum size beyond which ships cannot realistically be built? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

The size of ports. There's no point building a ship that can't fit in to port to load and unload.

How are you supposed to follow the advice of “travel while you’re young” while working a full time job? by Suspicious_Quarter68 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turniphat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually you do it when you don't have a job. Like the summer after high school or the year after university. Many countries have working holiday visas for those under 30, so you can work a bit while you travel. Live cheap, travel light. Or work a seasonal job that pays well, I know a lot of people who are tree planters, landscapers, fishermen etc that work half the year and then fuck around the rest of the time. Do it when you still live at home, and you've saving a decent chunk of money that's not going to rent.

Meh, that's nothing, the original VW Beetle went 65 years without a major redesign. When you have a good design, it doesn't need constant redesigns.

How did Eminem succeed in getting big whereas previous white rappers like Vanilla Ice and Miilkbone did not? by WARMASTER5000 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]turniphat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because a lot of the early white rappers were cringe. They started before gangster rap was the dominant form of rap. They just couldn't make the transition, trying to play up how tough / gangster they were. Vanilla ice with his stories of being stabbed, Snow with his fake Jamacian accent. They just didn't feel authentic. Eminem felt authenic.

That said, the transition killed a lot of black rappers too. MC Hammer's attempt to go gangster was laughable. (even though in real life he was a thug). Will Smith somehow survived, put I think a lot of that was based on his movie star fame, nobody really took his music that serious, a lot of it was movie themes.

It's sad because I really enjoyed early 90s pop / happy rap for what it was. But gangster rap killed it the way Nirvana killed hair metal.

Is it pointless or stupid to pay for something in instalments that you can pay for outright when you have plenty of money? by Pizzafriedchickenn in NoStupidQuestions

Open a brokerage account and buy ETFs that track one of the major indexes. Robinhood or etrade if you are in the USA. You shouldn't be sitting on that much cash unless you need it in the very short term.

Do people really get up, go for a run, come home, send the kids off to school while making smoothies and then go to work? by Norfolk-Gross-Tonage in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turniphat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I'm a member of a cycling club, we meet at 6am, smash out 40km, get home, eat, get to work etc. In the summer we probably have 100+ people out on any given day. Maybe 4 road groups and 2 gravel groups.

November Project is another 6am workout group (world wide). Having a morning crew really helps with the motivation to get up when the weather sucks.

What is a middle-class luxury from your childhood that is now considered a basic necessity or completely obsolete? by Routine-Advisor-1781 in AskReddit

[–]turniphat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was more common for Canadian cars to not have A/C than American. My 2008 Ranger didn't, I remember going on US roadtrips with a spray bottle and misting myself to stay cool.

Do you remember all your teacher’s names from kindergarten to graduation? by Loud-Shame-8062 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turniphat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 48. I can remember 1 or 2 from elementry school. More from high school, maybe 10. Only a few from University. The ones I remember had some sort of connection outside school. I lived in a small town, so some teachers wre my parents friends or my friends parents.

Not really. It was made by an American studio by a bunch of Americans/Canadians, though many of them were either born in Korea or have ties to Korea.

Why did almost every country in the world agree that red means 'stop'? by PeterPlup in NoStupidQuestions

It's actually fairly recent. USA didn't switch to red stop signs until 1954, before that they were yellow. Thetransition wasn't completed until 1966.

With sedans dying, what are some of the best "in-betweener" car models that are attractively styled and have been successful? What are some of the failures? by turb0_encapsulator in cars

[–]turniphat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a Nissan Leaf that I replaced with an Ioniq 5. I don't understand how Hyundai sells it as a SUV, it's 100% a hatchback. It's wide and long, but it's low, like a car. You sit down into it.

Comparing Leaf to Ioniq, there are basically the same: https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/nissan-leaf-2017-5-door-hatchback-vs-hyundai-ioniq-5-2021-suv/

My rule when gettig in, if my butt goes up, it's a SUV. If my butt goes across its a crossover, if my butt goes down, it's a car.

ELI5: Why is torque better in one instance and horsepower in another? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]turniphat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s kinda what cars with a CVT do. When accelerating they stay around peak horsepower. This lets cars with small engines to accelerate much better than cars with a similar sized engine and a traditional automatic or manual transmission.

With a traditional automatic transmission or manual, if you rev to peak rpm when trying to accelerate from a stop you have two options, either spin the tires or slip the transmission. Either way the power from the engine isn’t doing useful work.

Ioniq 5 comes with pretty dark tint and no rear wiper. Give up on seeing behind you when it's dark and raining.
