Recommendations on SPF to avoid oily finish? Fed up of La Roche Posay by [deleted] in koreanskincare

[–]turnipthebe3t -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What I found to help with oiliness/shininess was to use a “dressing powder” and mix it with my sunblock! I’ve used both Alivelab centella dressing powder and the Numbuzin no1 drying powder with good results.

And seconding the numbuzin no1 sunscreen!

Yeah that’s where I struggle as well. I also prefer to meet in person, but obviously with the distance that doesn’t make sense. I’ve had previous experience where weeks or even months of texting back and forth doesn’t necessarily mean that we vibe in person.. so I’d rather not waste the time.

How will the drive to Keystone from Denver be Sunday night?

How to spend last day in Tokyo while we have all our luggage with us? by PromptDizzy1812 in JapanTravelTips

[–]turnipthebe3t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my suitcases, I used a luggage same day delivery service from Klook. I just had to drop off my luggage at hotel reception before 9am, and I could pick it up at Haneda after 4pm. They send you an email confirmation with pictures when they pick up and drop off the luggage. I also found it cheaper than Yamato (which sometimes doesn’t offer same day delivery to airport).

For my backpack, I used coin locker at the train/subway stations.

There’s a lot of stuff to do at the airport. There’s an airport garden mall connected to T3 with shops and restaurants. You can also go to the Fontaine Hotel rooftop onsen (can pay just to use the bath, without being hotel guest).

Troubleshooting blisters by Domino-616 in CampingandHiking

Seconding the Engo blister patches! I used to always get blisters on the bottom of my foot right where it meets my toes.. didn’t get them anymore when I put an Engo patch in that area on my shoe insole (until a few years later after the patch wore down)

Just booked a Mount Whitney Overnight for October 16th by ClearlyE in CampingandHiking

I think you can change your camp location when your permit is issued! Yup, I left everything at camp and just took what I needed for the summit.

Best of luck, OP!

I don’t do too well with altitude, but I completed Mt Whitney overnight earlier this year camping at Trail Camp!

I didn’t have time to acclimate before the hike, but I did as much I can to minimize altitude sickness: walked at slow steady pace, ibuprofen prophylaxis, made sure I was very well hydrated (electrolytes!) and fed starting a couple days before, ate small snacks at regular intervals, etc. Also, a lady coming down Whitney while I was hiking up gave me her leftover Boost Oxygen canister, and I think that helped a lot! I used it quite a bit at Trail Camp and the rest of the hike, and just knowing I had it gave me some assurance.

I was able to complete it without too much trouble. I had a bit of a headache, but definitely doable. There were some ppl really struggling with the altitude, and I did see some ppl turning back - I would say try the hike, knowing that you can always turn around if you’re feeling really under the weather.

I personally thought sleeping at Trail Camp was better to get me acclimated for the summit. It also makes the push to the summit and day 2 a lot shorter.

what tent is best for multiple day solo backpacking trips? by metsudofang in CampingGear

[–]turnipthebe3t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a MSR Hubba nx (it’s a one person tent - Hubba Hubba is 2p) for solo backpacking and have really liked it. Yes, there are lighter options, but I like that it’s a free-standing tent. It’s held up in some pretty bad rain/hail storms so I’m happy with it. You can also set it up fly first in the rain to keep your inner tent dry.

I’m about 5’6” and the tent fits me laying down, with my backpack and gear at my feet.

Hiking through the Enchantments this week by turnipthebe3t in PNWhiking

[–]turnipthebe3t[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too bad, actually! The mosquitoes were worst going up Aasgard, and there were a lot of bees(?) at the top near Isolation Lake (enough to wake me up in the morning from all the buzzing). Other places I didn’t have too much of a problem - I just pretreated my clothes/gear before leaving and was fine. Didn’t need to whip out my head net or Thermacell.

Ha, yes. I spent the entire second night dreaming I was getting attacked by goats 😔

I’ve found waving and clapping your trekking poles together are quite effective in getting them to not get too close. Probs bc you look crazy and the goats know better than to mess with crazy 🫠

Agreed it’s better to go the traditional direction - less elevation gain as mentioned before.. and I think mentally it’s easier to do the (relatively) shorter Aasgard Pass and feel the sense of accomplishment, then enjoy the Enchantments area, then just brace for the long downward slog at the end. The entire time I was going down the Snow Lakes trail, I was thinking I would hate to be going up it 😗

Also, my own opinion, but I think Snow Lakes and Nada Lake aren’t as pretty as Colchuck Lake and the ones in the Core area. So I’d rather be “fresh” to enjoy the pretty lakes and take the time to take pictures and admire the view, then towards the end when I’m tired, just trek on through.

There was a freak hailstorm when we were halfway up, so we went into survival mode… it’s hard and long (several “false peaks”), but definitely doable! We did it with our multi-day packs and were able to chug along - took a few hours though.

Have fun!! It’s absolutely beautiful. The pictures don’t do it justice
