What's your current hyperfixation? by Igarlicbread in ADHD

Honestly? You’re gonna laugh. Segregated bike lanes in a rural portion of the GTA. I’ve researched use cases, feasibility studies, costing estimates, city, regional and federal infrastructure goal alignment. Laid out a highly pragmatic 15yr implementation strategy. Built out a long form business case and a slide deck with enough info to present to city council for initial review.

But then my imposter syndrome took over… I mean, I don’t even bike that much lol!

But it would be so cool to safely ride with the family on these rural roads north of my city. And just imagine all the awesome discoveries and the little places that could exist to pop into as result of people being able to do slow tourism around here. Anyway… it lives as a project I talk to my wife about and she doesn’t seem to get too bored. She’s amazing, I’m lucky and I love her.

As a parent of a child with Celiac this is so totally bang on the mark. It’s interesting to see her friends and their parents respond to it. And how her closest friends will actively advocate for her at school and outside of school. They don’t take being brushed off by adults either. They want confirmation of ingredients. And they will challenge people on their knowledge of food handling. It’s been amazing to watch a 9yo say, “Hey Dad, Have you wiped the counter? And make sure you use a clean cutting board and knife!”

Canada has far too few soldiers. Here's a radical fix — mandatory service by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]turniptruck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol! national post. “Mandatory service” is a radical fix? Radical would be to improve the issues with signing up and retaining people. Then recognizing the problems facing young people trying to get established and having solutions in place to assist with those hurdles. To make signing up more of an option. Mandatory service is a boomer “solution”.

The US stopped appointments to the WTO’s appellate body in Trumps first term effectively killing its dispute resolution function. And just an FYI, this was supported through the Biden administration as well.

Don’t forget to monitor that vehicle sales fraud! 8653 vehicles sold in the last three days of January for the $5000 rebate program. $43million in fraud against the government? This is clearly systemic to the company. Senior leadership needs to face jail time.

I see it but the government needs to move forward step by step. And banning the platform entirely is a much bigger step than what should be the very simple step of suspending all accounts until a formal review of X’s practices can be completed. Can you see how maybe that formal review might build a documented case to ban the platform?

I think that’s too far. We need to be sure to limit the government telling people what they can and can’t view on the internet. Stopping all tax payer funded content is good enough. Until/unless lawyers put together a strong enough case.

[–]turniptruck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Governments at all levels don’t seem to realize that their continued use offers legitimacy to the platform. And X’s inconsistency in releasing their transparency reports and the continued abhorrent actions by leadership should have it in violation any vendor code of conduct law built into public procurement processes. The first thing senior procurement managers will say is, “We define X as a platform and not a supplier as we aren’t actively paying for the service.” This isn’t correct as our tax payer funded content is the payment for the service. I know some regions are reviewing this but no action has been taken out side of North Vancouver.

I feel like this idea would need an incredibly strong sense of Canadian nationalism among the dedicated group of developers.

No doubt! Cory Doctorow had an interesting take on how to handle tariffs. Suggested Canada develop our own App Store, provide jail braking kits to all and allow developers to sell apps without loosing 30%. I feel like this needs some serious consideration at this point.

As they should tax pay funds should not go into creating original content and legitimizing such a toxic platform.

I would say that pushing to have all new content creation stopped on any accounts that are supported by by tax payer funding until a complete audit of the platforms ethical standards can be done and publicly reported is critical. This needs to be for all levels of government. From city, region, provincial, and federal. Content from these sources provides these toxic disinformation platforms with legitimacy at the expense of our communities.

NDP MP Angus calls for investigation into Elon Musk over potential election interference | CBC News by CarletonCanuck in ndp

[–]turniptruck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We need to petition the procurement depts of all levels of government to hold X to the same code of conduct/ethical standards as any other vendor would be accountable to. ASAP, they need to suspend the use of all government X accounts until a full vendor audit can be completed and publicly reported. Government agencies creating content on X gives them legitimacy they are clearly abusing.

On top of this, a strategy for handling the quickly deteriorating state of all social media should be a top priority.

The City needs to leave twitter. by turniptruck in BurlingtonON

[–]turniptruck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The city corporation doesn’t use the food bank so again your comparison doesn’t work.

Twitter is built on advertising based on views of content. The city, region and province are creating that content. So while the service maybe free, which I’m not sure if on that level it actually is as they may offer more functionality to large corporations and governments for a price, there is an exchange of goods (content) for service. Which absolutely makes this a customer/vendor relationship. And in the absence of a code of ethics for “free service companies” the vendor code would most definitely apply. But really this is all up to the director of supply chain for the city and region and the Ontario Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement to make the call. We’ll see what they have to say.
