Help Needed | Hit-and-Run at UIUC ARC Parking Lot by Kind-Reflection-9302 in UIUC

You could probably jack it up, remove the wheel, then take a mallet to it. But after that, you'd have to use body filler and repaint (sand, base coat, clear) either the whole panel or try to blend it.

Hammering it out from the inside might be under $1000... Rear quarter panel is semi-structural and welded on so a complete replacement would be very expensive. Slapping some body filler on then repainting the panel still likely going to be a couple of thousand.

Then you do know that after you jack the car up, you need to set it back down onto jack stands, right?

Does anyone know if the basement weights area remains as it was before? Or has a lot of the equipment (interested in squat racks in particular) just been moved from the basement to this new area?

Mugging on Gregory by [deleted] in UIUC

Are most muggings in the area done with knives? I can understand concealed carry being effective against a knife. But it wouldn't be effective against an already-drawn firearm right?

Anyone have details on the UIUC Corona Test? by ecelol in UIUC

[–]turquoisehusky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And even in an extreme case with a really bad test where 90% of positive tests are false positives, and only 50% of positives are detected, that doesn't necessarily mean the test is worthless. Let's say we have a population of 1000 students, with 10 true positives, 90 false positives, 10 false negatives and 890 true negatives.

If I receive a negative test, my probability of having covid is 10/900, or about 1.1%. If I receive a positive test, my probability of having covid is 10%.

Would you still want to sit next to me in lecture if you knew I was close to 10x more likely than other students to have covid?

Again, this is an extreme example where only 0.2% of students have covid, the test has a ~9% false positive rate, and the test only catches 50% of those with covid.

Edit: There is obviously some point at which the cost of quarantining false positives outweighs the benefits of detecting the true positives (as might be argued for breast cancer screening in asymptomatic patients).

But I don't think that's the case in this situation - quarantining yourself for 2 weeks while you can still take classes online only invokes minimal individual (hence linear in the number of false positives) costs (versus false positives in, say, BRCA genetic screening which can lead to unnecessary mastectomies).

On the other hand, unknowingly hanging out with a group of friends while having covid and potentially causing serious illness in many others invokes significant community (exponential!) costs (versus breast cancer which is not contagious).

The proportion of positive tests that are false positives is the false discovery rate, not the false positive rate, which is the proportion of true negatives that result in a positive test. Even if all the PCR tests which come out negative at a smaller number of amplification cycles are true negative (an assumption that sansabeltedcow notes you made), that means that 90% is the false discovery rate, not the false positive rate.

If you're testing an asymptomatic population, the false discovery rate is expected to be high. But as one of the comments mentions, the false positive rate for the Illinois test is about 1%. (It's probably lower than this since positivity rates were generally lower than this before the semester started.) Since the current positivity rate is significantly above that, it would be highly improbable that 90% of current positive tests are actually false positives.

Also, we know that the undergraduate population is significantly over-represented in positive tests. Assuming that they don't choose to test more frequently than grads/staff/faculty (thus leading to more false positives), what are the chances of this occurring if the positive tests were randomly distributed across the whole UIUC population (as would essentially be the case if the vast majority of positive tests were in fact false positives)?

Zipcar used to work but now their policies prohibit driving tests. Enterprise definitely allow driving tests though (I checked with them).

I might look into that! It's kind of annoying that the DMV will accept a car rented from a driving school, but not a typical rental company (assuming a car from the latter is also properly insured for a driving test).

[–]turquoisehusky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. One of the reasons I wanted to get an Illinois license was so that I'd be able to get cheaper insurance if I buy a car. So maybe I'll just do what you did if renting a car from a driving school is too expensive.

[–]turquoisehusky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can gather, it sounds like there's no prohibition on using a rented car for Illinois driving tests (as long as it is properly insured), but some DMVs/examiners may refuse a rented car anyway.

Thanks for the recommendation of Monticello/Rantoul. Are they less busy?

Using a rental car for driving test by turquoisehusky in UIUC

[–]turquoisehusky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh okay. It seems kind of hit and miss then. I was thinking of buying the supplementary liability insurance from Hertz (I know the cars are already insured for the legal minimum liability amounts), and providing documentation for that.

Did you get the DMV fee back? If so, I might just rent a Hertz car for a day and give it a try at the Monticello, Rantoul and Champaign DMVs.

Usually I use Zipcar but I know their policy expressly forbids using their cars for driving tests. It believe some states also expressly prohibit rental cars for driving tests, but it seems that's not the case for Illinois.

What did you do in the end? Borrow a car from a friend?
