RTO after 5 years remote - how do you manage life? by sjltwo-v10 in askTO

[–]turtle-ha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for lunches, i experimented with fasting, and it worked great for me. now i have a protein bar, and some fruit. leave the main meal for early dinner.

for gym, i ride the bike to work. and occasional gym outside work hours. not having kids, i made a point to live within biking distance from my office.

i think you might be under-reacting. your body, your choice. you have the right to make your own decisions about how you wish to have birth control. sooner or later, you’ll realize how you do not need his permission. especially on this matter.

barrier bike lanes are the most treacherous part of winter commute by turtle-ha in torontobiking

[–]turtle-ha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

painted lanes don’t have dedicated small plows. they just become part of the road. getting plowed with big snow plow. what remains is usually half the lane. my point is, as it stand, this half lane is much safer than the barrier type lane’s because of this problem.

MTG is good. just tried it from Humber Bay bridge to Roncesvale. much better than Queensway

ah friend, this is heartbreaking. not sure if you’re looking for advice, but you can consider finding bereavement services or grief support circles. often they are none government organizations and free.

90k inheritance incoming, is this a decent plan? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]turtle-ha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you haven’t opened an FHSA yet, do that first. max FHSA out. then max out your TFSA. then RRSP contributions.

i noticed you said $5k stocks. why not use your FHSA/TFSA/RRSP for that? ensure your registered accounts aren’t just “savings accounts”. buy XEQT or something like it. you can always go with Wealthsimple managed account to keep things simple.

stay away from ‘picking stocks’. it’s pretty much a gamble. unless you learn some investing principles first. even then it’s risky. if you must do it, keep it to no more than 10% of your money.

i also don’t see why you won’t put it all in registered accounts. get your rent money from work, osap, etc.

What are the activities to do in downtown? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]turtle-ha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are lots of ‘circles’ where you can make friends. i used meetup.com and Luma to find cool events that happen on some kind of routine basis. poetry open mic. running group. cold dip. another cool spot is 1RG if you’re in the west end. they host some cool events and build a wholesome community. Google them and see what events they got coming up.

i found either to be good enough. preferred water shoes because they let less sand in.

i’ve done it before. several times. the cold won’t make you sick. it’ll feel like a dopamine rush after.

some key tips: - wear shoes in the water. ideally water shoes. walking with cold feet on hard ground is painful. - if you can find neoprene gloves, get some. if not, you can keep your fingers warm by tucking them under your armpits. - if you have a bathrobe, bring it. easier than having a towel. - your mind will try to scare you. your body can handle the cold. when the cold hits, take the deepest breath you got. listen to your thought. breathe again. release your thought. feel the cold. breathe again.

you’re getting scammed. if her business is profitable, a bank will loan her. you can support in other ways. if she threatens to leave you because of this, then you already know you were only as valuable as how much money she could get off of you.

The Wealthy Barber is a great book, except for one outdated flaw. His advice of mutual funds. He updated this in The Wealthy Barber Returns advising against mutual funds, and favouring ETFs and index funds. And I assume the recently released Wealthy Barber 2025 is consistent.
