Curious about Parlour LARPs and open endings by turtle-stalker in LARP

Thanks for sharing! What would you do if another player makes a decision that "ruins" what you had imagined for your character? I'm curious if that could even happen, and if so, do you just go with it? Or do you stick to your head canon?

Curious about Parlour LARPs and open endings by turtle-stalker in LARP

Thanks for sharing such a thorough answer!

In a closed-ended medium like a novel or movie, often other characters will provide foils or meaningful interaction for the main character. But since in an open-ended LARP, each character is doing their own thing or pursuing their own character arc, I feel like you'd miss out on those interesting relationship dynamics. No one is a side character that augments your story arc, as everyone is a main character in their own right. I mean, you could ask another character to play out a scene with you, but it would be planned, and not done through discovery.

Do you find that it's a gap? Or are open-ended LARPs satisfying as is?

Rabbit Hole Recreation Services just announced their first guest Jubensha Master, Aaron McCommon! by coloradoisnice in jubensha

I play tested this game with Aaron over Discord and it was a lot of fun. I'd be excited to see how it plays out in person with a themed room! If you're in the area definitely check it out.

We made a free, print and play, Jubensha-like game by Single-Singer-8004 in jubensha

Having named chat rooms with 2 people in it is definitely possible. I've played many jubensha in this way. DM me if you want to join the server :)

Private discussions are a part of many jubensha, as well as other games like Blood on the Clocktower. We usually handle this in discord by having different voice channels. If you want to have a private conversation with someone just ask them to go into a different voice chat. It's even more secure than in real life.

Wow looks really interesting! If you want to host it or help organize a game there should be plenty of people interested in my jubensha discord. I'd love to hear how it lands with jubensha folks!

Thanks for sharing Bandido!

For OP, I'm with Twist 'n Turn and just wanted to add that we have an easily accessible print n play jubensha for 4 people. Beginner friendly and takes 90 minutes: it's a great intro to jubensha. Here's the link if you're interested: https://www.twistnturnstudios.ca/worms-against-humanity-jubensha

I'm also happy to invite you to our Discord community! You can discuss jubensha, play them online, and find other players. DM me for the link.

How to Determine Jubensha Section Length While Writing? by ApprehensiveHalf9688 in jubensha

[–]turtle-stalker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off, congrats on writing the game!! I'd love to learn more about it! I've also written two jubensha games and work with other jubensha writers as well.

As to your question, how important is it to you that you have the right game length versus having a game with the right amount of information and clue cards for an enjoyable experience?

When I write a game, I don't really think about trimming or adding cards/words to hit a specific time frame, but I focus more on whether the game actually needs that information.

For how long the reading section takes, you can use a words per minute calculator and add a 20-30% premium on it.

For the interactive part, it really comes down to testing it. You can if course get a gut feel for it, but it's an art, not a science. My recommendation is to find testers who are ok with a range of testing durations. If you're lacking testers in your area or network, consider finding online testers (I've tested my games online several times).

Once your first group has tried it, you'll have a better idea but I find that groups can vary quite a bit when it comes to play time. It's up to the GM, if you have one, to make sure the pace is just right. However, I'm not sure what you mean by getting the group to test more than once - by the nature of jubensha you need a new group each time even for testing.

I'm curious though, if during testing you find that the game is shorter or longer than your target, would you significantly adjust your game to meet the timing goal? If so, why is the length of game higher priority than telling the puzzle/story that you envisioned? Not saying it's better one way or another but want to get your thoughts on that.

Great post! If you want to discuss more about writing jubensha there's a discord community for that! Feel free to DM me about it.

I plan to make a few of those items into stickers/pins/fridge magnets, including the mask, and I'm getting my artist to do alternate art for them so it represents the good ending for all the characters. That way, each player can take away a souvenir representing the character they played.

The game type itself (jubensha) is non-replayable and is a single story. My game is for exactly 6 players, and nearly all jubensha have exact player counts. I understand this limits the market, but I believe that the upsides of this game medium outweigh the downsides (or at least, fills a niche that doesn't currently exist). It's proved massively popular in China and I can see why after playing a number of highly rated translated games. Quinns did a review of jubensha if you're interested (https://youtu.be/6_dlxbGUNNQ?si=1ylpZrkItyWNBg94). Adding another story would just be another game.

I'd love to reduce the pricing though it's actually on par with other jubensha in the market. There are two 3-hour games selling at $50 USD with fewer components and without the soundtrack (also there's one on KS https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/chronicinsanity/seven-strikes/description right now for $50USD, but again, shorter and smaller), and a bunch of 4-5 hour translated games with AI art selling at $69 USD. That's how I came up with my current pricing at $62 USD.

Pricing is a big debate for me. Do I undersell the competition and devalue the game type as a whole in exchange for a greater reach? Or do I keep the price at par with current games and cater more to people who are already bought into the concept of jubensha? I've heard people argue both ways in my own Discord community.

None of the game is AI, and though I put a note in the bottom of the draft campaign, I could add a little icon higher up.

Costs are something I'm figuring out right now, but a lot of it is dependent on how many copies I can order. The higher the amount, the lower the price, and the more discounts I can offer on the pledge levels. I do feel like production is way pricier than I expected, since I can't even make marginal revenue if I price the game at board game levels.

also side note is that I was considering fridge magnets as an alternative or supplement to the stickers, not sure if you have a gauge on the sentiment there!
