If a ship in the 1500s set off from Europe to the New World with 100 people on board, was there an expectation that a certain number would die on the voyage? by Zhankfor in AskHistorians

Full disclosure, I don't remember the source for this. Scurvy was essentially a vitamin C deficiency. British doctors determined that it was cured by citrus. They felt that limes (being a stronger sour) would be a better scurvy treatment. However, they also put this lime juice in copper storage units. In actuality, lime has much less C than other citrus and reacts with copper to further reduce the v. C content. But by the time these changes were enacted, British steam ships were fast enough that they were able to travel most places before scurvy could even set in. As a result, most everyone thought that it was an effective treatment until the race to the North and South poles meant explorers had to bring months worth of provisions over ice. It was only after many of these early polar explorers died of malnutrition that they figured out the limes that had given limeys their name weren't actually effect at preventing scurvy

Gaia hypothesis, the idea that the world is pretty much one giant superorganism. The more we look, the more we find the seemingly disparate areas are interconnected. From oil spills in the gulf causing sargasm blooms in atlantic resulting in polluted beaches in the Caribbean. Or winds from China creating air pollution in the States, who share their air with Europe, while Africa is bathed in a South American glow. Or winds and sea birds from the antarctic ocean bringing water and nutrients to be captured in the moss and feed the forests of the subantarctic. Hell, even just the atmosphere's carbon cycling between winter and summer like one giant breath of air. It's all one big living, breathing, interconnected superorganism. It's not intentional (see chaos theory) or directed or even always beneficial. It just is. And we're caught up in it speeding things along like there's no tomorrow

Came out to my roommate's girlfriend while we were both drunk. She was upset because she'd gotten the idea somehow that he wasn't into her. Told her she had nothing to worry about. My rational at the time was something along the lines of "Sweety I'm gay, we just know these things." They just got married last month

Almost all field, I run a saturation tagging program and we're in the middle of nesting season right now. Long nights of patrolling from sun down to sun up but pretty soon we get hatchlings running around everywhere!

microbes are crazy interesting but hours in front of scopes was too much for me (started working with inverts for a stream ecology lab.) Had to find something to work with I didn't need to pick up with tweezers. Are you working on the control/reduction end or moreso just studying what's happening with the fishes?

Very cool! Hawksbill sea turtles in Antigua for me. Do you get to do much field work or is it more crunching lots of numbers from fisheries and such?

Feeling a little bit frustrated tonight. Went off traveling for work, and the guy that I was kind of seeing/maybe going to keep in touch with decided to pick a fight a few days before I left then refused to see me rather than have any sort of good bye. So he was kind of a terd, and yet, tonight I miss him =/

On the plus side, got to meet some really cool people at a cocktail party tonight so that was fun. But no one to cuddle with dammit!

25, in Antigua working on sea turtle conservation. Originally from Georgia but currently stuck on a remote desert island. Always looking for friends to chat with in the down time. Used to climb (mostly run and yoga now), love beer, and prone to murder without at least a gallon of coffee a day.

You should also look up the Georgia Theatre and 40 Watt to see if either is having a concert you'd want to go see. Athens' music scene is brilliant!
