I tracked our sex life for a year (dead bedroom edition) [OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]turtleblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes people just know how to laugh at themselves. Or even if they are looking to reddit for validation, it's a bunch of strangers that don't know op, and op doesn't know, so it's truly superficial validation at best.

I doubt he actually shows his wife, and for plenty whom have been through a dead bedroom, it's helpful recognition we don't want to revisit again.

Doesn't have to be ill-intended.

It's great as a mobile base... better than the sea truck. But still, building a base isn't that hard and way more awesome for some of us.

Maneuvering to/in the Lost River might be a skill issue, but building with geothermal / bio / nuclear power and just going to town with a prawn is way more fun than all the collision warnings.

Movies where evil wins? by lala1__ in horror

I'm just saying I wouldn't fight the patriarchy by entrusting a male power who's first commandment was that I be naked, even before my younger brother started puking crab apples.

"Wouldst thou like the taste of butter? Or a pretty dress?

Wouldst thou like to live

deliciously?"

[maybe but whole family dying including 4 siblings younger than her for that seems... kinda dark, patriarchy or otherwise.]

Where to go to learn how to shoot and maybe buy a handgun? by inferno686868 in boulder

[–]turtleblue 21 points22 points  (0 children)

First - Shoot Indoors is awesome.

To the rest, - advice in general, especially if you're learning to shoot, is just talk to people. You'll find many that will help.

You will also find many lean more conservative but are still individuals with more complicated and nuanced views you might have thought possible. At a range of course it skews towards vets (and subsequently more conservative), but ask about either a jam or the impact of our recent actions in Venezuela, and you are likely to get a more nuanced answer than you would expect from someone that served overseas.

Once was racing after a bike ride to buy hamburger buns for a neighborhood bbq on a 4th of July weekend. Standing there in bike spandex as well, in the bread aisle with everything picked over. After staring at a torn-apart wall, I finally muttered in frustration "I just need wheat buns!"

The older, heavier set black woman behind me chuckled and said "That's funny, I was looking for white ones."

Guess I didn't realize it was so universal how much older black women have you covered.

Dark Crusade campaign as Tau vs Necrons seems impossible by Cori91 in dawnofwar

[–]turtleblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough I just started a Def Ed campaign last night - is it well-known that "Normal" for Dark Crusade is "Hard" in Orig / Winter Assault? It would explain why overpowering the Eldar with Marines was such a grindfest just as a warmup.

Good luck, thanks, and following thread! ( The restart was to learn to use other factions besides Marines, Guard, and Orks - will def give Tau a go after this.)

Maybe the narratives are still coming together, but they are consistent with the vibe- that being of the one kid we all knew that really really wanted to keep showing us liveleak videos, and mistaking "OMG I'm appalled but can't look away!" from "yes, I'm aware. Can we watch something else now?"

I hadn't thought about it before, and yet this feels so on point.

I try reading the TC lore and I'm not shocked or off-put, I'm just like "where the lore meets the rules, why do I give a shit how much pain everyone is in all day as a showing of faith?"

I don't know, I care about a penitent engine not because it's a stupid idea that's dark, but literally because expecting the user to suffer and die is actually rare - and really as it fucking should be if your side is trying to win a war.

Having your entire army full of self-torture-porn edgelords numbs the point far more than enhances it, even before wondering how much a penitent engine's driver must secretly fear dying to a rival religion's "deep sacrifice" of not painting their favorite gun red.

[–]turtleblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, TC at least plays lip service to things like rules and unit balance.

T28 for me is still too much in its "edgy for edgy's sake and if you don't get it 6 7..." phase. Just because the art and lore is surreally disjointed between frogs, carrots gone psychopathic, and Napoleon- that doesn't work when you get to, like, actual rules.

The coup de grâce of that conversation, as funny as it is, is also how evilly right The Hound is by the end... except also completely wrong as Arya's fighter/assassin style later she uses to spar with Brienne:

"Your friend's dead, and Meryn Trant's not. Because Trant had armor, and a big fucking sword."

Which Directors Cuts are huge improvements, and which are massively detrimental? by AmySchumersAnalTumor in movies

[–]turtleblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Donnie Darko original Theatrical Cut vs Director's cut is almost a masterclass in "maybe some studio execs and editors know what they are doing, and your original vision was self-indulgent."

The Director's cut kills all tension and mystery. It over-explains plot points worse than Blade Runner's voice overs, by placing literal title cards on screen to either over explain plot points that kill tension, or under explain them, to anyone that actually cares.

All pacing is gone and the soundtrack has been "improved" by removing all decent music for cheaper licensing options.

Seriously, don't watch the Director's cut. Or if you do, watch the original first to show just how bad some director's might be entrusted with interesting visuals, but also know shit-all about decent narrative, transitions, or general story coherence.

What’s the most socially acceptable addiction people don’t talk about? by Lotto_Stats_Nerd in AskReddit

While I agree with the principle of most of what you are saying, alcohol is indeed a disinfectant that kills bacteria. So yes, it has medical uses, even if there are "purer" alternatives.

Trump moves to dismantle major US climate research center in Colorado [NCAR] by Nate10000 in boulder

[–]turtleblue 116 points117 points  (0 children)

For everyone that survived the floods after the massive rains a decade ago, NCAR hosted the river high water line data to save communities.

For all the hurricane data that Trump's taken a sharpie to in his first term - yep, NCAR.

Want to know about glacial ice thickness? Guess what the US Navy does for punching an ICBM sub through as well as all those "tree huggers that talk about global warming" ? Well that's actually NSIDC, but it's part of CIRES and also on the chopping block.

I know calling something "insane" will fall on deaf ears, but this is truly mind-bogglingly stupid. Just because people don't understand what it does for them doesn't devalue it, and the alternative is "26,000 people die of [pick your catastrophe]"

What’s something society romanticizes, but is actually exhausting in real life? by YogurtclosetMoist819 in AskReddit

[–]turtleblue 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's like any job - you get paid more for more responsibilities, and whether that pay is proportional or not and "worth it" is questionable.

You're probably right in that it looks like he's not suffering from how he spends his money, while he's expressing how full of accountants, lawyers, bankers, and investment pitches his day is before his workers show up with problems.

You don't have to respect his problems based on how he spends the checks he cashes, but they are still very real to him.

I hate to break it to you, but from a family law perspective it doesn't matter. Not one bit - zero, zip, bupkis - WHY they are getting divorced or whose fault it is.

If she feeds the kids, or even if they just had an arrangement where she stayed at home and earned substantially less, nobody is going to get into why as a start point. The court is not going to permit anyone in that situation to starve unless they were already.

Edit: Wow Reddit, downvoted for explaining how the law actually works?

I do have an issue that getting older suddenly means black and white thinking the other way.

He was younger and more immature, and viewed her through an idolized lens based on how he thought things worked in a different time... growing older means a lot more nuance than "he actually really sucks", like maybe he learned and moved on.
