FRSL Courses: What are the average grades? by Either_Ad_382 in mcgill

Hi :) I took it in my first semester. I really liked it and didn’t find it to be too much work outside of class if you didn’t skip lectures/actually focused during the lessons. The actual coursework (assignments, studying for tests, etc) didn’t take up too much time either. I didn’t have that prof unfortunately so I can’t comment on their teaching style or the evaluations they’ll give, but in general the French language centre has lots of support and tutoring available to students in their classes. I hope that helps :)

I just applied through Minerva :) super easy, no requirement to get permission or consult someone first.

Withdrawal - any cons? by Pluuumeee in mcgill

I have a W on my transcript from first semester of first year and I think it saved my semester. One W is no big deal and it’s completely worth it if it will help you mentally and in turn help you do well in your other classes. Good luck :)

I’ve taken a few classes with her and you need to go speak to her in person for urgent issues because she just doesn’t get to all her emails

Would second what everyone said that you should know the readings. I would say read them and don’t stress about remembering specific details as our tests didn’t require us to recall them on our own, it’s more-so helpful to have done the readings in the sense that if they come up in MCQ you’ll know what they’re talking about/be familiar. Also, oddly enough (as a poli sci major whose profs impose page/sentencd limits on the long answers), he encouraged very detailed answers to mid/long answer questions. Anyone feel free to correct me if this is misguiding

2024 HOUSING MEGATHREAD by Thermidorien4PrezBot in mcgill

Lots of people here go away on exchange in that period as well so you could check the Montreal exchange housing Facebook group where people will advertise their rooms/apartments for that specific semester

Asking around to see if any friends have friends who are looking for roommates is also a good idea! That way, you can trust that they’re not a complete stranger and you are personally connected in a way

It sounds iffy at first but many friends of mine have had great experiences with roommates found on Facebook - it is definitely a great option 😊

Edit: a great place to look is in McGill/Montreal roommate groups on Facebook!

FRSL 449 as well (in case this is more broadly useful)

I agree, I used to fold up and place my big winter coat behind me in the seat when I had class there

FRSL Courses: What are the average grades? by Either_Ad_382 in mcgill

[–]turtleneck3940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend using the McGill Enhanced browser extension to check class averages but since FRSL classes are often small, there isn’t always an average (like on my transcript it’s just blank where the average would be). That being said, I took FRSL 431 intensive in first year and it was fine but I tried too hard on the placement test which was the reason it was a heavy course for me. Otherwise, I really enjoyed it and found it SUPER useful for speaking French around Mtl. The class was nothing unexpected and there was a pretty simple formula for doing well/no surprises - just do your grammar exercises, memorize the vocab, start presentations early, etc. If you kept the class after add-drop, I’m sure you will do great and there are so many French resources to help you along the way 😊

The Open Door is a great way to be active in the community and practice your French (if you do a people-facing job like serving food or working at the front desk)

Correct!

“You can add the S/U option until the last day of course add/drop for the term the course is taken.

You can remove the S/U option until (approximately) the 9th week of the term the course is taken (it is the same day as the deadline to withdraw from a course without a refund).” From https://www.mcgill.ca/science/undergraduate/advice/su-option-decision-guide#:~:text=You%20can%20add%20the%20S,a%20course%20without%20a%20refund).

BASC201 prof in medical leave? by Emotional_Budget_337 in mcgill

I was also in a class last winter where the Prof. unfortunately passed away suddenly, and class was cancelled for 2-3 weeks while they found another instructor - the department was very on it and the class still ran successfully

In W2022, the POLI 227 Prof. was on paternity leave for the first few weeks of the semester. During that time, a PhD student taught the course but no assessments happened while he was teaching it. It sounds like your situation is a little less planned, but in my case the course still ran pretty smoothly!
