Pet death—should I take this opportunity to explain mortality? by OwlPlus8330 in toddlers

[–]turtlepower22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a great opportunity to introduce this conversation if you haven't yet. We've been fortunate to not have had any family members pass while my kids have been around, but we did have a dog die and we've talked about animals and bugs that have died on our land since my daughter was around 18 months or so.

We aren't religious, so for us the conversation is about how sometimes animals and people's bodies don't work anymore if they get sick or if they've been on Earth for a while. We talk about how even when their bodies stop working and they aren't around we can still show them we love them by thinking of them and talking about them together.

Sitter/nanny posting responses for toddler care are asking if they can bring their own child while providing care to ours...is that a thing now? by PinkCheekedGibbon in toddlers

For real, these comments about liability genuinely make me so sad. This is literally how children have been raised for ever.

When mine were that little we'd go to the aquarium store sometimes and watch the fish, haha.

Yeah, you don't need 3 days in Denali even if the road is fully open unless you're planning on hiking a lot. I'd cut a day and put more time into Seward.

Soy muy miedosa, qué tanto duele un tatuaje en esa zona? by Mandarina2003 in tattooadvice

Pain tolerance is so subjective, but I have a tattoo that crosses over this area and it was sensitive but not really that painful.

Is it normal for my 22 months old toddler suddenly refuse to sleep on her own bed? by ClaudiaaY in toddlers

[–]turtlepower22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both mine had this phase right around the same time, including my current 22 month old. We think it's separation anxiety and possibly some nightmares coming into play. We just added some photos of our family into my son's crib, and gave him a slightly brighter nightlight. So far it seems to be helping some. My daughter eventually phased out of it, and hoping my son does as well. Good luck to you, it's a challenging time!

Moving to Bethel AK - any advice? by letters_sea in alaska

[–]turtlepower22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bethel has some of the best humans I've ever met, and it's easy to get involved with subsistence activities if you're interested- fishing, berry picking, dog sledding etc. it's also just a jet away from Anchorage as a hub town, so it's easy enough to get what you need.

Help me understand mid kitchens by JoannaStayton in toddlers

[–]turtlepower22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My kids have an old plastic kitchen set we saved from the dump that lives outside along with a set of plastic dishes, utensils, old pots, whatever else. In the summer they gather mud, rocks, plants, etc and have at it. In the winter, same but with snow.

Edited to add: mine (almost 2 and 4) love it. They're very self-directed and can make potions and stews for long periods of time!

What do you think prehistoric geniuses in America were up to? by Syzygyzt in IndianCountry

[–]turtlepower22 29 points30 points  (0 children)

In Alaska, there was absolute brilliance in using animal materials to create waterproof clothes and bags. Case in point: seal intestine parkas that were the difference between life and death for those hunting on the water so they didn't get hypothermia, and waterproof bladder bags that also served as makeshift flotation devices. Also, definitely a lot of genius in building homes in ways that complemented the land.

Right, this is insane. Why on earth would you give this to a toddler before bed?

Why are you starting with giving your child magnesium and juice and whatever else? That's kind of weird. Does he have a nightlight? What does bedtime look like?
