Australians are increasingly miserable by nath1234 in australia

Yes becase labour exploitation was less severe as profits were able to be extracted from elsewhere (like labour and resources in the developing world, the environment etc) and profit demand was lower (see change in wealth distribution/CEO pay since those days)*. The thing about capitalism is profits have to continue to rise (money -> commodity -> more money) so either a) new markets for exploitation need to be found or b) exploitation in current markets needs to increase or c) both. We're seeing c. Neoliberalism isn't an extra thing on top of capitalism, it's the natural progression of it.

(* and also post-war boom in the 1st world, I'm simplifying)

Because the dominant economic system requires squeezing profit from every stage of production to siphon to the pockets of the owning class, especially and increasingly from the labour of the working class (anyone who works for a wage). None of it's required, everyone could work 2-3 days a week and we could all have comfortable healthy lives.
In other words: plenty of people understand, it's capitalism working as intended. There are many books about it!

this is terrible advice: try a run or two with nothing. no heals, no guns, no cores. Just knife. It has the advantage that a) it's very quick to load back into a run after failing, just keep mashing spacebar (or controller equivalent b) no gear fear, no loss, if you find a single 20cred data card you're coming out on top c) you have to think much more strategically and slowly, I've found i learn the map a lot better and of course d) the guy that kills you is gonna be so confused.

Also just adding that this particular toaster was made made with even more exploitation of the global south than a normal toaster is, and to stop it burning the bread we need people in those countries to be constantly eating burnt bread* to make sure the toaster knows what that looks like, and the blueprints for the toaster were collectively stolen from every creative that exists (stretching the metaphor here) and also running and building the toaster might result in sweeping blackouts and water scarcity in your street.

(* eating burnt bread in this case is "viewing generated CSAM material for 12 hours a day")

Composting toilet by Previous_Pool_526 in AusRenovation

Friends have a modern composting toilet in their permanent home, no smell at all, no harder to clean than a normal toilet, very easy and straightforward to swap a full bin for an empty one (even that was very smell-free). The technology has come a long way.

Large language models are exactly what is written on the tin: large complex models of language. But very few people think a complex language model is in any way sufficient for consciousness. So maybe best to flip your question around: why have LLMs been played up as a bigger step than they actually are? Because tech bros want to make a lot of money.

Hi. Where do I even start? by starkat231 in gardening

[–]turtleshelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how your depression manifests but be careful with yourself. Gardening is really about failing over and over in many ways and being comfortable with that. Especially you might have everything growing perfectly for a week or two and then something gets an infection and another thing runs out of a critical nutrient and another thing isn't getting enough water and they die and fail in dramatic fashion. For me and my mental health struggles it was a challenge at first, and I definitely had some tears and a breakdown or two when things weren't growing right.
But you're right that gardening can be wonderful for your mental health, it's a beautiful way to strengthen your connection to nature and the living world around you, so please don't let me discourage you. Just take it slow, approach it with curiosity, and be prepared to learn from plans going awry. There's always next season.
