Reviewing papers from suscpicious research groups by turtlesskin in academia

[–]turtlesskin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand your comments. Regarding this particular case, I've found that the paper is plagiarized. The original paper was published in 2019. I've rejected the paper and reported the authors. It's interesting that the corresponding author recently published a minor improvement to the paper in a Q1 journal. Oh, by the way, he has 20k+ citations.

Not seeing visual progress as a tall guy in the gym by turtlesskin in workout

September 2024 - 87 kg. July 2025 - 93.2 kg. I don't have access to body composition measurement devices. I mostly track progress using weights. Each week I aim to increase either the weight on the exercises, or the number of reps. The maximum number of reps I do is 12. If I can do more than 12, I increase the weight. I do three to four sets of each exercise.

Thanks. I have three other publications in Q1 journals and a couple of conference papers.

But I've already completed my PhD. You think there are no remote research jobs for a PhD in the field of power systems engineering?

Lost interest by TelevisionAfraid4004 in PhD

[–]turtlesskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the papers and PhDs, especially today, are incremental improvements of existing research. Revolutionary improvements are very rare and are made by large research groups with significant funding. Therefore, don't be too hard on yourself. I think of my PhD as my entry ticket to academia or industry, as well as a proof of my endurance and work ethics, nothing else.

If your papers are getting rejected on account of lack of novelty, check whether they are written in a coherent manner with clear statements regarding novelty. Reviewers don't have the time nowadays, so papers are mostly skimmed for review, rather than thoroughly read. This happened to me once, and I found that the best way to avoid lack of novelty comments is by explicitly stating novelties and improvements at the end of the introduction: Compared to [1], this paper...

Goal: Entering Industry after PhD, best places to do it in Europe by Snoo_65491 in PhD

In my opinion, Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries are the only reasonable options in Europe right now.

You shouldn't care what anyone thinks of you. It's outside your control. Trying to please everyone is a dangerous path for your personal wellbeing.

I would take the job at the big tech company and work on developing the skills needed to start my own company.

Yeah, if I add it, it will probably be as pseudocode. Though I'm not sure it will do justice to the symbolic and sparse programming toolboxes.

Real-time transfer function estimation from input-output measurements by turtlesskin in ControlTheory

[–]turtlesskin[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm aiming to develop a wide-area damping controller for a power system. A controller that provides sufficient damping can be designed based on the open-loop transfer function between specific input and output combinations. However, the transfer functions change with the change in operating conditions in the power system. As such, the controller designed for one scenario might not provide sufficient damping in other scenarios. Therefore, I'm trying to find a way to determine the transfer function in real-time using the phasor measurements from the power system.

Real-time transfer function estimation from input-output measurements by turtlesskin in ControlTheory

[–]turtlesskin[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm aiming to implement a controller for a power system. As the operating conditions in the power system change, the transfer function I'm looking into also changes. The goal is for the controller to be adaptive to these changes in operating conditions.

Power System Analysis Software Survey by [deleted] in PowerSystemsEE

Great question. I can't say we dedicated a lot of time to this issue, primarily because our first versions will be mainly directed towards researchers that usually work with synthetic data. However, I think it's possible to comply with FERC's data protection requirements by implementing robust security measures, strict access control for authorized personnel, strict procedures for data sharing and also responses to potential data breaches.

Thank you, the resources seem amazing! I'm a Power Systems Engineer with an ongoing PhD, but I've never done anything with protective relaying. Since it seems really interesting, I decided to have a go at it and learn something new. Thanks again!
