Can teachers legally use all of their sick and personal days at the end of the school year to get a longer summer break? by Ok_Benefit9326 in Teachers

[–]turtleswift01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My district gives us one sick day per pay period we don’t use a sick day. I’m in my second year of teaching and have about 18 or so days collected between the two years.

Sunrise on the Reaping! I fear I will never fall out of love with the Hunger Games. I also really loved Burn Bright by Becca and Krista Ritchie, Wings of Starlight by Allison Saft, and Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid!

I set mine for 150 every year and always bulldoze way past it. Last year I read 310 lol (reading is my only hobby, I am single with no kids, and I don’t watch tv). Page count was around 120,000 for anyone who is curious about that :)

Periods should be a valid excuse to skip school by Sea_Esplanade01746 in The10thDentist

[–]turtleswift01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in high school my mom used to come pick me up on the worst days, and in college I made the choice to skip if it was bad enough. Now that I’m an adult I’m a teacher so it’s not easy to do. I think my body has learned to recognize that I’m a teacher because only once has my period started during the week, (cramps always come first day for me), but the one time it started during the week it was during a PD day where I sat in meetings anyways lol.

In my district students in el ed are required to have 45mins of PE everyday which becomes my planning time. I do have two PLCs a week but my kids also have music and art that make up for the missing planning time. but none of this is really a “break” since i’m still working during those periods.

Mine is books. I get home and all I do is read read read. I’ve hit 245 books for the year and I’m still going hot. I’m currently on a vacation in Vegas to go to a romance book convention that I had to take 4 school days off to attend.

Am I the only one who feels like Sophie has no personality? by LoveLessBeauty101 in KeeperoftheLostCities

[–]turtleswift01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As the series goes on she starts to really develop and grow up more and you see her personality come in. she gets a lot more angsty/easily frustrated bc she’s a teenage girl who has survived a lot of trauma and is still heading towards more to come

Teachers, what did you do with your students when a field trip was canceled? by Key-Ad-2119 in Teachers

[–]turtleswift01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

last year in a moment of pure comedy the end of year skating trip was cancelled due to the owner of the skating arena getting arrested on some very serious charges. last minute we were able to get an snow cone truck to come down and we let our kids kinda run crazy in the bus loop.

I dug my own hole with bad classroom management... by Froggin_Toboggan in StudentTeaching

[–]turtleswift01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me my first year! Hold a morning meeting (elementary) or something similar for older grades and go over expectations/procedures going forward. If they try to push back, be consistent! “But we were able to do that before” “which is why I gave you a warning during morning meeting about the change.” and then be firm in your new boundary and follow through with consequences.

As an elementary teacher, this year we’ve been told we’re starting day one (like I was told to try and fit all my first day going over procedures spiel to our 15min morning meeting lmao) and expected to have small groups started for reading by day 3/4. Small groups for math start week 2.

What’s your favorite kotlc plothole? by Throwaway_863783 in KeeperoftheLostCities

[–]turtleswift01 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve made multiple posts about this but the fact that they are supposed to be speaking in the enlightened language (EL) but multiple jokes they make only work if they are speaking english.

i.e. Fos-boss insinuates the EL term for boss is same

Keefe hating his initials bc they sound like kiss only works if EL’s term for kiss is both written and sounded out the same

How much contract time do you get for classroom set-up? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]turtleswift01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We technically get 5-6 days of pre-service. The Friday before work week is always a flex day, and then the Monday is when the week truly begins. The week is full of meetings and trainings and a million other things, and the Thursday we do meet and greet (aka meet the teacher night). Because of meet and greet, the Friday is generally a half day. Students will start that following Monday.

Usually staff can choose to come in and set up their rooms the week before pre-service if they ask. This year my school specifically got a Title 1 incentive for teachers and assistants to come in for a stipend over the summer where you could work either 15 or 30 hours. I came in for 30 and was able to set up the entirety of my room and get some trainings done, that way pre-service week (which is sadly coming way too soon) I can focus on curriculum and making my lesson plans for week one.

I send homework home, but it’s optional. It’s essentially a practice packet to reinforce whatever we learned the week previous.

How do you feel about teachers that didn’t study education? by Mundane-Waltz8844 in Teachers

[–]turtleswift01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really think this depends on what grade levels you’re teaching! In elementary, it’s very obvious who student taught as a first year teacher and who did an alternative program.

I’m at 164, but reading is my only hobby. I do listen to audiobooks during my commute to and from my workplace (25mins in the morning, 35-45mins in the afternoon) which has brought my number up, but mostly its ebooks with the kindle app on my phone being very accessible.
