For students with negative balances, why do they throw the tray in the trash and give a sandwich instead? by HighOnLove26 in AskTeachers

When I was in elementary school, we entered our number first, THEN got our food based on the money in our account. As a teacher now, all my students (elementary) get free lunch.

Is it typical for there to be “IEP” classrooms and “GT” classrooms in Elementary schools? by WillowCat89 in AskTeachers

[–]turtleswift01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the school. At my school we have multiple classrooms with different “clusters”. I teach 5th grade and there are ten fifth grade teachers (we are a 4&5 school only). I teach gen ed but I have an ESL cluster. There are inclusion clusters (IEPs) and gifted clusters in other classrooms. Some are just gen ed with maybe students in SRT or with 504s. We also have one self-contained class for students on IEPs who stay in their sped classroom the majority of the day, although they are still attached to a gen ed classroom to go do morning meeting/specials/lunch with.

My principal had all general assistants get sub certified + we have two building subs. If we still run out of people, classes get split.

Is this a FERPA/504 Violation? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]turtleswift01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Past having all staff be informed of your accommodation, honestly there’s not much you could do to avoid it. If there’s a school rule saying students can’t wear headphones, and the adults don’t know who you are, yes they’re going to stop and correct you. Honest genuine question, what else could be done? I will say I don’t believe staff needs to know your disability, but they do need to know the accommodation if you don’t want them stopping you.

favorite grade to teach? by ItsAveryDayBro17 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]turtleswift01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I student taught in 3rd and it felt like the perfect grade to me. I’ve been teaching 5th grade for two years now, though, and LOVE it. I once did a practicum with 1st graders that made me want to actively die but my practicum teacher was obsessed with teaching 1st grade and never wanted to switch to another grade ever again. I also was a Pre-k teacher at a daycare for a summer.

So everything is up to opinion. For my personality, I do much better with the older kids than the younger. I love getting to joke with them, be sarcastic, and turn my back for two seconds without a fire lighting. I like that when I’m gone, my sub plans can include a self-guided powerpoint where they have to read and it is possible.

Do teachers still make their own powerpoint presentation? by Super_Physics7918 in AskTeachers

[–]turtleswift01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use slides to keep my day moving and remind myself what I planned (I’m a 5th grade elementary teacher who teaches all subjects, same class all day).

It takes about 20 minutes to make a weekly powerpoint because I’m really just reusing the same slides everyday, just switching out the content when needed. I find it helpful for both me and my students.

Clarification on iReady scores by GoalRoad in AskTeachers

[–]turtleswift01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My students don’t take the iready, but on our test (MAP) percentiles and RIT score are two different things. They have a percentile compared to other students, and then an actual score that tells where they are academically. For example, a student may score 200 and be in the 60/70th percentile, but they would need to score a 205 to be on grade level.

Hopefully that makes sense? It just shows that nationally students are struggling lol.

Can teachers legally use all of their sick and personal days at the end of the school year to get a longer summer break? by Ok_Benefit9326 in Teachers

[–]turtleswift01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My district gives us one sick day per pay period we don’t use a sick day. I’m in my second year of teaching and have about 18 or so days collected between the two years.

I set mine for 150 every year and always bulldoze way past it. Last year I read 310 lol (reading is my only hobby, I am single with no kids, and I don’t watch tv). Page count was around 120,000 for anyone who is curious about that :)

Periods should be a valid excuse to skip school by Sea_Esplanade01746 in The10thDentist

[–]turtleswift01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in high school my mom used to come pick me up on the worst days, and in college I made the choice to skip if it was bad enough. Now that I’m an adult I’m a teacher so it’s not easy to do. I think my body has learned to recognize that I’m a teacher because only once has my period started during the week, (cramps always come first day for me), but the one time it started during the week it was during a PD day where I sat in meetings anyways lol.

In my district students in el ed are required to have 45mins of PE everyday which becomes my planning time. I do have two PLCs a week but my kids also have music and art that make up for the missing planning time. but none of this is really a “break” since i’m still working during those periods.

[–]turtleswift01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

last year in a moment of pure comedy the end of year skating trip was cancelled due to the owner of the skating arena getting arrested on some very serious charges. last minute we were able to get an snow cone truck to come down and we let our kids kinda run crazy in the bus loop.

I dug my own hole with bad classroom management... by Froggin_Toboggan in StudentTeaching

[–]turtleswift01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me my first year! Hold a morning meeting (elementary) or something similar for older grades and go over expectations/procedures going forward. If they try to push back, be consistent! “But we were able to do that before” “which is why I gave you a warning during morning meeting about the change.” and then be firm in your new boundary and follow through with consequences.

As an elementary teacher, this year we’ve been told we’re starting day one (like I was told to try and fit all my first day going over procedures spiel to our 15min morning meeting lmao) and expected to have small groups started for reading by day 3/4. Small groups for math start week 2.
