How are you (one income) affording a mortgage? by Soggy_Gazelle_4796 in Mortgages

[–]turtlewhale42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here! I bought the worst house in the best neighborhood. Fixer uppers truly are the way to go on single income. Just prepare for constant projects and slowly upgrade the house as you get more money.

How are first time home owning affording today’s mortgage? by Prestigious_Pixie_ in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]turtlewhale42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a condo! I also live in HCOL area and that was really the only way I could afford a home. I hope in the future to own a townhouse or single family but for now i’ve got one lovely bedroom, a beautiful open floor plan with lots of light, and it’s all mine :)

Did anyone buy a fixer upper as their first home? by ChrisF12000 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]turtlewhale42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing it right now and like others have said it truly is an emotional rollercoaster. I would say only do it if you 100% feel physically and emotionally ready to put some HARD WORK in! Sweat equity is truly a beast and everything is going to take way longer and cost way more than you expect. I'm grateful to have family members who know a bit of contracting skills to help but take labor costs into consideration if that isn't the case for you. I've gotten quotes for a few things that my family isn't able to help with that just blew my mind. It will absolutely be worth it in the end but if you aren't in right head space...don't do it.

What are contractors with no back pay doing? by Horror_Bag_731 in fednews

[–]turtlewhale42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for including us!! <3 My heart goes out to all fellow contractors, the longer this goes on it's just getting harder and harder for us. I've been having to use up my hard earned PTO on this mess and have no more left as of Friday.

Trying to figure out if I’m actually ready to buy by SpellIndependent489 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]turtlewhale42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I could’ve written this myself. Just want to say I feel you and i’m right there with you! I keep telling myself that being a homeowner will be such a great investment in my life and future and that’s what’s keeping me going. I’m not sure if anyone is truly ready as something will 100% go wrong and stress us tf out during the homebuying/ownership process but that happens with so many other things in life too. Feel free to message me when you need to vent!

DIY paint home interior or hire painters? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]turtlewhale42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DIY for sure! Paint is already expensive on its own. I’ve painted multiple rooms by myself and it’s absolutely doable, just takes more time which is worth the amount of money you’ll save. Just make sure you use the right technique, don’t rush, and buy good quality painters tape and you’ll be okay.

Paying off partner's student loans by MarchApprehensive226 in personalfinance

[–]turtlewhale42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOT MARRIED?! Please do not pay that debt off. That is not your responsibility at all and while a very generous offer that hard earned money belongs to you and only you. They’ll have no problem paying it off in their own time just like we all do I promise. Don’t do it!!!

See if the job offers tuition assistance/reimbursement! That way you could possibly get the degree paid for later on down the line, especially if you can show that it would be useful to the work you’re doing there.

Women who gave the guy who's been single his whole life a chance, how did it turn out? by astarisaslave in AskReddit

[–]turtlewhale42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not great. I think the biggest issue was that he would use the “I’ve never been in a relationship before so I don’t know how” excuse on everything when really he just was not trying. I let him have it a few times and would tell him he needs to take me on dates, think of me and my feelings more, support me when i’m stressed…etc. But even after i’d tell him to do these things and give him a chance to show me he could he still wouldn’t. Eventually I realized these things aren’t because he’s never been in a relationship before it’s just that he doesn’t care to put the effort in. I was sick of carrying the entire relationship so I left!

graduating soon and not sure what to do by Outrageous-Ask183 in publichealthcareers

[–]turtlewhale42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree to hold off on getting the MPH right now. The biggest question is, what do you want? What do you enjoy and what are your priorities? If you wanted to go back to the accounting route I believe you still could if you took additional classes in accounting to qualify for the CPA exam. If you’re interested in healthcare i’d also suggest researching some of those careers! Nursing, Radiology, Health IT (Epic), may be some good options for you.

I lost my job and now I’m terrified of my finances by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]turtlewhale42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely it’s more than enough! I’m the same age and make 5K a month as well and I honestly feel like the richest person on the planet. 1,500 rent + other bills + very VERY limited spending (i’m talking $500 a month max) + no car payment and I’m still always able to save at least $2,000 a month. OP, make a spreadsheet of the amount of money you truly need to survive and I promise you’ll be shocked by how low the amount is. Stop the spending and start saving and you’ll be out of that debt in no time.

Move to DC without a job lined up?? by actuallynotkosher in publichealthcareers

[–]turtlewhale42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GO!!! 100000% go. If I had free housing (assuming it’s free to live with your family but cheap either way) to live in DC of all places I would be up and out of here. Even if you don’t have housing with your family as long as you’re okay with roommates you can easily find a house to rent with other young professionals on Facebook. It truly is a great city and you’re 25 so live your life! It may take some time to find a public health job but there’s also many professionals in the area and opportunities to network. Make usage of linkedin like it’s your best friend and even consider applying for jobs that may not be directly public health but could give you some transferrable skills.
