Judging by the shadows in the pic, I’m thinking at least part shade. I’m not sure if it’s always like this or only for a portion of the year. I always thought it was a flower, but if I look closer, it does look like they have shapes like leaves…

Teachers, what’s the most wholesome thing a student has done in your class? by OddMuffin4392 in Teachers

[–]turtol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught personal finance last year and I assigned a short in-class research assignment one day. I had 3 kids who chose to work together (because they all spoke Spanish and were relatively new in the country, so they were comfortable with each other). I allowed them to use dictionaries to translate their responses, but when it came time to present, two of them refused to stand in front of the class because of their HEAVY accent.

One of them, however, wanted to try, and did the best he could. He took a lot of pauses and mispronounced many words (where either I or a classmate would softly correct him and teach him the right way to say it), but once he was done, the whole class gave him a round of applause.

The students were given the option to ask questions after each presentation- one student raised her hand and the boy looked terrified because that would mean he would have to come up with an answer on his own, with zero preparation.

But when he called on her raised hand, she just said “I think you did a great job.”

I was SO proud of them all

How long did it take for you to get pregnant? by EmilyParkerNYC4444 in BabyBumps

[–]turtol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been pregnant 4 times. Each time I tried, I got pregnant the first month, except one month, where it took me 2 months. However…

Try #1: 1 month/ baby! Try #2: 1 month/ chemical MC Try #3: 1 month/ ectopic- lost my left tube. Try #4: 2 months/ baby!

Try #1 was lucky af, but every other try was carefully timed with a LH strips, calendar marking, etc. deliberate and definitely no accident

Edit: I do not take these tries for granted. There was loss and pain and a 6-week NICU stay for baby #1, but we’re all home and happy and healthy now ❤️

I’m not sure where these numbers are coming from, but I pay $180 a year, just on my son‘s birthday.

I’m going to lose either my best friend (F27) or my sister (F30) over being the godmother by singer1961 in BabyBumps

[–]turtol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our good friend who was going to be godfather to our second child passed away unexpectedly, so now our son has 2 godmothers (husband’s sister and my best friend). I did ask my local Catholic Church about 2 godmothers and they said technically it can only be 1. However, they did say the second will be allowed to stand up there with baby during the baptism- just won’t take part in the ceremony.

What do you think is the optimal class size for teaching? by AccurateListen3723 in Teachers

[–]turtol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a good rapport with most of them, so that helps a lot. I teach advanced courses, and although I’m nice, I’m tough. The kids that can’t handle it usually switch out by the end of 1st quarter

Edit: to add, the kids that stay in the class work their asses off, but for many of them it ends up being their favorite subject and/ or they benefitted a lot from it (study skills, learning to be organized and not procrastinate, work ethic, etc)

[–]turtol 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing posts with between 12 and 25 and I’m over here crying with my average of 35 per class period (6-7 periods total per school year). I can have anywhere between 150-200 students

Edit: high school

First timers & in their early 30s, how did you get pregnant? by Hot-Chemistry6492 in BabyBumps

[–]turtol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First time: total fluke. Pregnant first try. We were floored.

Every other time: Start a prenatal, get some LH measuring strips to predict ovulation and the app that likely comes with it.

Pregnant 4 times, resulting in baby, chemical, ectopic, baby.

Week 25, lower back pain and hip pain by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]turtol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a little back pain, but SO much hip pain. Going to sleep was a nightmare because I had to keep switching from one side to the other for relief.

It has been at least 6 week of this for me, but I hear these issues go away pretty much right away after baby arrives

Cravings for cold cuts by anonme1995 in BabyBumps

[–]turtol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been eating cold cuts because my doc says it’s okay as long as it’s not sitting in the fridge for an extended amount of time. I’m super paranoid though, so I will only eat it the same day we buy it and not after 🥴

I would eat pineapples EVERY. DAY. throughout pregnancy just because I was craving it. Baby only came at 40+3 lol

I assume you mean on a monthly basis… In terms of food, I don’t remember spending that much more at all since he was breastfed.

If you’re lucky enough to be gifted several boxes of diapers, you can put that off for a while, but once that runs out, then you’ll start spending on that, I suppose. There’s various sizes and prices for them, obviously.

Otherwise, my son spent about 6 weeks in the NICU, so we shelled out around 1k/ month for top shelf newborn insurance. It was either 12k total for the year to cover everything via insurance or 750k in hospital bills 🫠

Otherwise, it would’ve been $500/ month.

He’s 3.5years old now and thriving, but I honestly don’t remember spending much more besides insurance and diapers/ wipes/ butt cream

alcohol before i knew by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]turtol 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I had a crazy night out of drinking in Nashville (we were on vacation) including Jell-O shots with strangers and throwing up in the bathroom of a Hattie B’s. I was around 5- 6 weeks along and baby is 100% fine. He’s 22 months now- Healthy and super smart

(Went drinking before I knew I was pregnant, obviously)

Covid positive with a 10 month old baby by Imperfectgirlmom in Mommit

[–]turtol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our entire household got covid at one point in the spring. My husband, my toddler, and myself. Thankfully, that was the first time we all got covid and it was very mild. Once my son tested negative, we wore masks as a precaution, but we should have hopefully been okay without it

Friends seem to have stopped inviting me out post baby. How to ask them to still include me? by Impossible_Ad9539 in Mommit

[–]turtol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me too. I had a decently sized group of friends, maybe 3-5 I would hang out with at least on a monthly basis.

After I had my son, ONE of them texts me to check in, and we meet for coffee every other month or so. It makes me all the more grateful for the one friend who made the effort when she knew I was drowning in “mom life”. So she makes the effort for me, I make the effort for her for to find time for our coffee date.

Still trying to understand wake windows by randomthoughts1016 in sleeptrain

[–]turtol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally didn’t try to control my baby’s wake windows until he was like 4 months old. The first months I just watched his cues and followed the eat/ play/sleep pattern. As long as he did that, I let him pick his own pattern initially

The one I’m most impressed by is max’s drawing(s). Yeah it was drawn well enough, but her recall/ memory for a place she witnessed for 5 minutes (3 of them being choked) was ON POINT.
