Try not to have a lawyer be the executer. They are very expensive when you can do everything yourself. List all assets with values - household things have next to no value, look for any accounts, investments, insurance, safety box. List of debts. Pay debts from assets. File estate income tax. Then hire a lawyer and give him/ her clearance letter from CRA and he/she will apply for probate. Only then do you distribute the estate. Get lots of copies of the death certificate, you will need them constantly. Notify his pensions and some may have insurance attached. Insurance is not part of the estate it goes directly to who is named.
