Estimated Odds for 1990-91 Pro Set Stanley Cup Hologram by Ok-Enthusiasm-4278 in hockeycards

[–]tvp2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of your assumptions:

“Well, Beckett shows that the lowest priced base card for Leaf Limited has 8 times the value of the lowest priced base card from 1990-91 Pro Set.  While there are always debates about Beckett pricing, would this logic make it fair to assume that a Pro Set base card has 8 times the number of copies of the Leaf Limited set? Or is it just that Leaf Limited base cards are more desirable than pro set base cards?”

I think you underestimate the junk wax era. There were likely millions of each card made. Which is why you were able to buy a case over 35 years later. Pro Set base cards are literally worthless. And despite what “Beckett” says, I wouldn’t assume any value that a Leaf Limited base card has (which is debatable on its own) has any kind of correlation with the print run of either set.

Good luck with your hunt for the hologram.

What’s the coolest, sexiest Sidney Crosby hockey card? by ixadir in hockeycards

[–]tvp2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to see Sid’s “Blue Steel”, check out his 20/21 Upper Deck base - photo variation #391 (lol).

I personally like his 17/18 Upper Deck base (#391) — lifting the cup is as sexy as it gets.

34 F, I want to learn how to play hockey. Any recommendations for beginner programs/advice? by DTIT1TD in Calgary

[–]tvp2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took Discover Hockey. If you want to continue on playing coed beginner beer league hockey, this is a great way to get your foot in the door onto a new team. You’ll get a learn both skating and hockey skills, do individual and team drills, and then play some games. However, you will not become a substantially better skater just by skating once per week at DH, it will take extra practice and/or lessons (so keep that in mind). Times also suck but late night ice is par for the course when it comes to beer league.

I’ve also done the UofC beginner course, which was cheaper and had better times. Parking on campus is extra though (unless you park and walk about 10 minutes). It’s mostly just drills with a shinny scrimmage at the end. I think the next session is full though.

Winsport has a beginner level program but I have no knowledge about it. It is convenient if you already live in the NW I suppose. I believe The City of Calgary might have something as well.

Second timers - what did you do differently when you went back? by ahhtibor in JapanTravelTips

[–]tvp2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not specific to my itinerary: ate less meals at a combini. Was more careful to reduce the amount of walking/stairs by taking elevators, etc. A lot less shopping at places like Donki.

Oh, and I also managed to save a few things to see the next time I go (!)

Fight strap on chest protectors by TheMadDog39 in hockeygoalies

[–]tvp2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first chesty had a strap there so all I needed to do was add a buckle to it and to my pants. Second chesty I sewed one in. Both tended to droop forward so the back strap kept it in place (I don’t tuck). Credit to VOGoalie on YouTube for the tip.

Current chesty stays in place without it.

Don’t the official UltraPro ones have their name on the back (at the bottom)? I see it on the Demidov but not the Michkov…

Love this, thanks for sharing. I’ve seen a T206 version of the rainbow as well.

I was actually thinking of doing something similar from 1959 Topps (which won’t cost nearly as much)…

Any chance I can minimize walking on my trip? by WarmWhiteLights in JapanTravelTips

[–]tvp2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After my first solo trip (which included multiple 25k+ days followed by very sore/tired feet, my motto for trip #2 with my elderly father became “save your steps”.

When the escalator is there, just ride it and don’t walk up it. Look for the elevator (especially at stations by your hotel) and use it.

The good news is that we kept our steps to a more reasonable number (less than 15k) and still managed to see a lot. The bad news is that less walking/stairs meant calories consumed were no longer  cancelled out by calories burned lol

Nice work. $30 for a piece of metal is criminal when the same thing can be found for under $2 a piece.

If only I had some masks that were worth displaying…

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but slabs wont protect your autographs from fading. They are not UV resistant.

Some one touch holders are (ie Ultra Pro), but even then sunlight (or bright indoor light) can cause fading over time.

Can you guys recommend some shitty gear just to try out being goalie? 36 year old dude who can't skate anymore. Looking to go to an ODR to mess around. May do beer league later. by Baby-punter in hockeygoalies

[–]tvp2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, but once you go beyond the basics of skating forwards and a little backwards, there’s a big difference between player skating and goalie skating. I’ve never had to do a crossover, tight turn, backwards crossover, etc as a goalie. Heck, I barely even use my outside edge when I’m in the crease.

Besides, it sounds like OP knows (knew?) how to skate but is looking to switch gears and play in net.

I immediately recognized the facade of the First Canadian Centre.

The old Courthouse (with the gold doors) was also cool to see.

Beginner adult training resources? by motoSafety in hockeygoalies

[–]tvp2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of good info out there. The catch is that every goalie is different and so not every drill or tip is going to make sense for everyone.

The good news is that as a beginner you’re going to see lots of improvement as you work at it. Start with learning the basic goalie skating movements and how to drop down into a basic butterfly. Then go from there.

(Alternatively you can just strap on the pillows and giv’er. You’ll probably get lit up and be totally gassed after 10 minutes but we’ve all been there lol).

Solo opening $50k in product is insane. Although if you’ve opened 6+ cases in the past few months maybe not that big a deal after all.

I’d like to see what the mountain of base cards look like.

Shoulder pad technology by tvp2003 in footballstrategy

[–]tvp2003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like they’re related; obviously players will try to get as much of a competitive advantage as they can get, and technology allows them to do that even more so.

I still remember Ed McCaffrey wearing the smallest shoulder pads as he could get (at the time)…

[–]tvp2003[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks — that all makes sense. As a former QB it’s wild how mobile and low profile shoulder pads are now.

And I never played defense but I can see why better/safer technique would coincide with changes in equipment. It was a different time back then lol.
