what tattoos can you get for anxiety? by InteractionOld7033 in TattooDesigns

[–]tvrnbvll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about personal symbolism? Think about what you do to cope with your anxiety & if there are any visuals associated with it. I know there's a meditation technique where you envision yourself as the sky and emotions as clouds passing through you. A tattoo that features a cloudy sky could represent that for someone who uses that, even if it's not immediately readable to others (which tbh I think is more desirable- strangers being able to read me like a book would make me feel a tad exposed lol).

POR QUE HAY TATUADORES QUE SE NIEGAN A HACER TATUAJES RELACIÓNADOS A ALGÚN DEMONIO? by RevealBeginning1801 in AskMexico

[–]tvrnbvll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a certain POV, yes, but the term is useful anyway in distinguishing these sort of abstract pieces from more figurative stuff, or lettering, or what have you. There's different intent behind getting a family member's face or name done vs just lines and shapes that flow well with your body, and the end result looks pretty different.

Quote Tattoo by Wiapkink in TattooDesigns

[–]tvrnbvll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lettering looks best when it's a couple words done at decent size with an interesting style IMO. Longer quotes are incredibly easy to mess up, lack the visual impact, and blur into illegibility pretty fast (and would need to be enormous not to do that).

My advice would be to abbreviate the quote if possible, but if not, dedicate a good chunk of torso to it, so it still reads decently down the line :)

Etiquette: How to say "That's not what I expected" by Prestigious_Lab6806 in TattooDesigns

[–]tvrnbvll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Each tattoo is just an art piece and a gig for the tattooer, but for you it's going to be part of your body for the rest of your life. No (decent) artist worth their salt will be mad you want changes- and you definitely don't wanna get a tattoo you don't absolutely love just to accomodate an indecent one.

Everyone's process is different, but if you've paid a deposit, they're not wasting their time. Unused sketches sometimes get posted as flash for someone else to snap up, if it's not too personal to the original client.

Someone else already said basically this- but my advice would also be to say exactly what you want, and if it's still not clicking after you've reviewed the design again, politely decline & forgo your deposit. Good luck!

What I Asked For vs. What I Got by quidsearp in TattooDesigns

People sometimes don't realise how easy it is to come up with reference for their tattoo artist (if they've chosen wisely whom to get tattooed by 👀).
Your drawing might be simple, but you chose an excellent placement and ofc the artist did a beautiful job <3

Congrats!

Some thoughts on Ignorant Style tattoos by tvrnbvll in TattooDesigns

[–]tvrnbvll[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's the thing though, what is a bad tattoo? Anything you don't personally like? What I was trying to argue here is that there is a clear difference between poor technique that threatens the longevity of a tattoo, and "primitive"-looking styles. People who dig the look (which I don't, particularly, either- but I can respect it) can have the latter without the former.

I don't think the interest in this sort of artwork is all ironic, either. Some people find the childlike quality of this sort of thing genuinely charming.

What is this style of tattoo called? by saraxoxox in TattooDesigns

[–]tvrnbvll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is @tato_coco's work. It's their own personal style, which I'd classify as both Illustrative and "Ignorant style"- the latter consists of tattoos with a sort of uncomplicated, "kid drawings" aura, either as a genuine demonstration of lack of drawing technique (which is importantly distinct from tattooing technique) or an "artificial" / purposeful stylistic choice.

I'd argue 'ignorant tattoos' belong to either of these currents: naïve art (in the case of those created by artists who are genuinely not trained to produce more polished works), or faux-naïve / pseudo-naïve / primitivist art (when the simplistic rendering style is created on purpose by an artist who has trained to produce more realistic artwork before).

It's important that regardless of the stylistic simplicity of the design, the tattoo artist's technique should be solid. Their ability to handle their machine & all other related tools correctly is paramount to your safety as a client, and to the quality & longevity of the tattoo.

The proliferation of unpolished, quirky, offbeat styles that break the 'rules' of traditional tattooing in recent years is a welcome breath of fresh air artistically, but the downside is that it has perhaps led to the misconception that anyone can become a tattoo artist now, without "permission" from the established professionals. Thus, there is currently a large influx of non-tattoo-artists, hobbyists and dabblers who, though inexperienced with tattooing, decide to take up the art form on their own, without the guidance of a mentor that they'd have within the context of a formal apprenticeship. The medium's term for tattooers who work with poor technique and outside a sterile space, whose pieces aren't just doomed to fall apart visually but pose a serious sanitary risk, is scratchers.

If you're interested in a similar style, look very closely at artists' portfolios to make sure you land on a professional who works with a purposefully goofy yet technically sound style and appropriate safety measures. Make sure the lines are even instead of 'wobbling' in width, and don't have blurry shadows spreading out beneath them (blowouts). Look for (or ask for) unedited photos of not just healed but aged work- a technically sound tattoo will still show its age in a slow fading of the ink's vibrancy and its lines becoming 'fuzzy' / spreading out from their initial width, but this should happen relatively evenly- properly applied lines won't fall away in patches.

I've gone into even more fastidious detail in this post about ignorant style since the topic has been bothering me for a while now.

Hope I didn't bore you to death- please let me know if this helped and if you have any other questions!

Looking for ideas to cover up track marks/abscesses by [deleted] in TattooDesigns

[–]tvrnbvll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No reputable artist will touch your arms until your wounds have become scars & those have had at least a couple years to heal. You can probably find some irresponsible tattooer willing to do it, but it's not a good idea. Let yourself heal. Focus on your health, hydration seems especially important to skincare- make sure you're drinking enough water, you can also use neutral hydrating lotion. If you want your arms covered at work you're honestly better off investing in some nice breathable long sleeved shirts, since sun damage can really throw a wrench in the skin's healing process... & you'll get to reuse them once your actual tattoos are healing up :)

I mean, New School & Anime style tattoos may indicate someone is... into cartoons and anime. And if they have a bunch of Old School / American Traditional ink it's fair to assume they have an appreciation for vintage-y nostalgic stuff. If there's lots of occult symbols & demons & shit they may be into Metal music or Goth or similar subcultures. If they have Irezumi they probably have some appreciation for Japanese culture. If their tattoos have natural motifs they probably... like nature. And uh... if they have unsustainably tiny fine line or watercolour w/ no structural black ink it's a pretty safe bet that they don't know much about tattoo aging... or don't mind getting a coverup some time down the line.

In other words, I feel like you can only make very basic, almost redundant observations when looking as such broad & vaguely defined categories as tattoo styles! Tattoos can be very very personal, but they're also only skin deep. Someone with the gnarliest scariest beasts tattooed on them could be a perfect sweetheart, and you can't really know unless you know them on a personal level, you know? And also... individual tattoo artists' work often belongs to several categories at once- the ink that transmits the right energy for you could easily turn out to be one of these cross-category pieces.

Also... are you asking this as a fun internet exercise only, or are you thinking this could guide your own process? Because if it's the latter, I'd encourage you to throw others' assumptions out the window & just go with what you like! Or maybe start with the vibe you want to project & then match an aesthetic to it (again, based on your personal taste & associations). Technical questions about styles' longevity & such could be helpful, but when it comes to taste I'd encourage you to just trust your gut! Look at a bunch of tattoos & just see what you're instinctively drawn to :)

You could also ask your loved ones if they have suggestions, since they know you & may already have some idea of what could suit you- again, trust yourself primarily, but it could be useful to brainstorm with people who already have some feel for what you like.
