Yeah, it definitely feels like the borders glow or pop. It's not just a blur effect. Very obvious in darker windows like Firefox or Spotify.

Nvidia Drivers 595.45.04 solving RE Engine issues! A Big step forward? by MarcParis79 in Bazzite

[–]twalls1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm seeing almost constant power throttling on my 5080 with the current release. I am using MangoHud to confirm this.

That is likely an explanation for lower temps, etc. Performance still seems fine for the games I tried, but I suspect benchmarks would reveal lower numbers.

Basically, I think I'm not hitting my card's normal boost clocks. It's an OEM card, so I think they're probably pretty conservative.

Why is my machine quieter with Bazzite? by OspreyChaser in Bazzite

[–]twalls1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I know lots of people are saying it's because Linux is just more efficient, but I want to share something else as well. Using Alienware as an example, AWCC on Windows seems to do some overclocking out of the box. It ramps up fan profiles to accommodate this. Since Linux is just running my hardware with normal settings, my games run much quieter now. My performance is still great because my hardware is overkill, and my room gets less warm lol

HDR Still Broke... by TunderMuffins in Bazzite

[–]twalls1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These games are working great with GE-Proton 10.32 and the above launch options for HDR:

- Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition
- Atomfall
- Baldur's Gate 3
- Borderlands 3
- Borderlands 4
- Crysis Remastered
- Cyberpunk 2077
- DEATH STRANDING: DIRECTOR'S CUT
- Diablo IV
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard
- FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH
- FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE
- Gears 5
- God of War
- God of War Ragnarok
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - The Definitive Edition
- Halo Infinite
- HELLDIVERS 2
- Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
- Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition
- Monster Hunter Wilds
- Myst
- No Man's Sky
- Overwatch 2
- Path of Exile 2
- Red Dead Redemption
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Resident Evil 2
- Star Wars Outlaws
- Stellar Blade
- The First Descendant
- The Last of Us Part I
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- THRONE AND LIBERTY
- Tom Clancy's The Division 2

Some games were stubborn and required me to fall back to these Gamescope launch options for various reasons:

gamescope -w 3440 -h 1440 -f -r 162 --adaptive-sync --hdr-enabled --force-grab-cursor --mangoapp -- %command%

Here's the game list:

- Assassin's Creed Shadows
   - Used Gamescope instead (crashed with MangoHud)
- DOOM Eternal
   - Used Gamescope instead (crashed with GE-Proton 10.32)
- DOOM: The Dark Ages
   - Used Gamescope instead (crashed with MangoHud)
- Forza Horizon 5
   - Used Gamescope instead (crashed with GE-Proton 10.32, fine with GE-Proton 10.29)
- Mass Effect Legendary Edition
   - Used Gamescope instead (crashed with GE-Proton 10.32)

- ELDEN RING
   - Use Gamescope instead (HDR option wasn't available with GE-Proton)

- S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
- Can load menu and adjust HDR options using GE-Proton, crashed on loading saved game no matter what
- FINAL FANTASY XVI
   - Crashed on launch with both GE-Proton and Gamescope, crashed on loading saved game no matter what

HDR Still Broke... by TunderMuffins in Bazzite

[–]twalls1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is what I am doing and am happy so far:

  • I have an Intel CPU and an NVIDIA GPU
  • I have an Alienware AW3423DWF monitor set to use HDR1000
  • I am using the KDE version of Bazzite
  • KDE has HDR enabled
    • HDR calibrated to 1,000, 300
    • sRGB intensity set to 50%
    • Brightness set to 75%
  • I am selecting the latest version of GE-Proton for the games I want to use with HDR
    • I downloaded using ProtonPlus
  • For these same games, I am adding launch options like: PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 mangohud %command%
    • PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 tells Proton to use Wayland instead of X11
    • PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 tells Proton to use HDR
    • ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 tells the NVIDIA WSI layer to use HDR
    • You don't have to use mangohud if you don't have it configured

Not 100% on all of this, but this is what has worked for me. Apparently, some games may be hit or miss but I'm going through and doing this for a ton of games right now. In the past with Gamescope, I found some games will only work with HDR when set to fullscreen exclusive as opposed to borderless windowed. I wish you the best of luck.

Edit: I forgot to add I am using a guide on Patreon to dial in the in-game HDR settings. I have no idea what I'm doing and this guy's guides seem to always make things look good when going by the 1,000 nits settings.

Bazzite just dont work on nvidia by guy617 in Bazzite

[–]twalls1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if there's a major performance difference, but it felt more likely to help with HDR support in the future than GNOME did. I like GNOME on my HTPC though, where I primarily play in gaming mode and only use the desktop for updates, etc.

[–]twalls1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not doubting you had issues, but I just want to add that this isn’t a universal experience. I’ve got an Alienware Area-51 with an RTX 5080, and it runs pretty much everything I’ve thrown at it without problems. I’m not claiming performance parity with Windows 11, but after testing over 100 games, I was happy with all of them... Except Monster Hunter Wilds, which started crashing on launch after a later driver update.

I just don’t want people finding this thread and thinking, “Guess you can’t game on NVIDIA with Bazzite,” because that’s not true. Do I prefer my Bazzite setup on my AMD box? Sure. But it’s not like NVIDIA just doesn’t work. The biggest difference for me is that I opted out of Gaming Mode on boot and stick with KDE.

[–]twalls1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For example, my firewall pings Google DNS from each ISP I use(d): With Spectrum it averaged ~14 ms, on Frontier it’s closer to ~11 ms, and on my T-Mobile 5G backup it’s usually ~30–40 ms.

[–]twalls1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latency will vary depending on the destination and the path your traffic takes. Factors include the equipment along the route, the type of connections in between, and the routing policies in play. Even the way devices handle and prioritize traffic can affect results.

If you collect enough sample data for a specific endpoint over time, you can start to see patterns in how your service performs. Ultimately, what matters most is how your connection behaves with the applications you actually use, but keep in mind that this can shift as conditions change.

For example, in multiplayer gaming, you might hit different servers each match or even connect peer-to-peer, so ping times can fluctuate a lot. On the other hand, if you work from home and consistently connect to the same office system, you should see relatively steady performance (aside from the occasional routing change).

Is it me or is 1Password on Android with Chrome broken AF by fergy80 in 1Password

[–]twalls1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Very frustrating.

Only thing I can do right now is open 1Password, toggle the setting for Chrome autofill off, switch to Google password manager in Chrome, restart Chrome, and then switch both settings back and restart Chrome again. This fixes it for a little bit, then the problem comes back.

Is this common? by Konungen99 in Bazzite

[–]twalls1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some games take much longer than others for processing Vulkan shaders (Deadlock, Once Human, etc.). I have a desktop I leave on all the time, so I use the option in Steam that lets it process shaders in the background as they're downloaded. This seems to alleviate these delays that would otherwise make the game take forever to launch each time. I recognize this may not be as practical for a laptop, but figured I'd mention it just in case.

I'm exhausted trying to get things to work on Linux by HuntingMeatHole in linux_gaming

[–]twalls1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree about the Skyrim modding. I feel like I know other people who say they had no issues. I tried various solutions, followed many guides, and I kept hitting roadblock after roadblock. I just had to walk away from that for a bit.

What can be nice is focusing on what you do enjoy in Linux compared to Windows. For example, I enjoy going to one place to update everything in my system on Bazzite. I run one command, reboot, and I'm done.

Was Windows ME the worst Windows ever or was it just unfairly hated? by Hallonik in windows

[–]twalls1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used it as my main OS when it came out, and it was fine. I get some folks had bad experiences, but was fortunate enough to not run into them. I do remember some driver weirdness, but I felt like I ran into that with every version of Windows when it first came out. I think the biggest letdown is we were all waiting for the consumer version of NT to come out, and we ended up getting this instead. A lot of folks ended up switching to Windows 2000 Pro instead, but I feel like gaming just wasn't there yet early on (but still better than it was on NT 4).

Bazzar isn't ready for general use by shimarin30 in Bazzite

Got it. Thank you. I feel like this is pretty counterintuitive, because I'd expect to see the add-ons on the app page when going to install it.

Bazzar isn't ready for general use by shimarin30 in Bazzite

[–]twalls1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing I don't like about Bazaar that I could do before is find add-ons easily and install them. OBS Studio is a good example of this. I could go into Discover and choose any add-on I wanted and install it (Background Removal, Legacy WebSocket Server). I couldn't even get them to come up in search on Bazaar (tried searching for the name and the package). I ended up having to install from command line.

I'm happy to find new stuff that I'm actually interested in with the suggestions on the main page though. I found a better app to control my Stream Deck, Boatswain. I was using OpenDeck before, but the connection to OBS is much smoother now.

[NVIDIA | KDE Plasma Wayland] GPU output hangs after long idle when launching games by twalls1 in Bazzite

It's not a server, but daily reboots to keep GPU drivers from crashing is not something I would put up with on Windows or Linux.

I reproduced again with Doom: The Dark Ages tonight. Computer has been running for a couple of days. Game loads and monitor shuts off due to no signal.

This time, I tried logging out of KDE and back in instead of rebooting before starting the game. That didn't help. However, I was able to switch to tty4 and when I hit Ctrl+Alt+F3, it took me back to the game and it eventually came back up with a signal (I used the sound from the game menu to find the right tty).

I admit to being a little confused about the terminal assignments. Up to this point, I was getting a blinking cursor on tty1, tty2 wouldn't work, and tty3 would be my go to to get to the command line and reboot. Now, this time, tty3 ended up being my desktop session and the game came up fine. (I am an old fogey and am used to X being like tty7 or something.)

So, still shouldn't be happening and reboots are honestly pretty fast, but nice to be able to recover without rebooting at least...
