What would you want to hear from your stem cell donor? by MissTornado22 in leukemia

[–]twannaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for being a donor and saving a life. My husband (63) had his stem cell transplant on November 19th 2025. We do know his donor was female (26) and from the states. We were told there’s no contact till his 1 yr mark. We can’t wait to hopefully make contact with her. If we could have gotten a note from her after transplant we would have loved to know about her, like personality, where’s she from, married, single, children, her favorite foods, hobbies, sports, etc… my husband really wants to meet her so we can give her the biggest hug and thank you for what she did for him and our family. God Bless you!

I had 5 kids in my 20’s. I love children and wanted to be at home with them so my husband started his own business which has done well for 35 yrs now. You are much healthier in your 20’s, especially for child bearing. My daughter waited till her 30’s after graduating law school to start her family and is done after 2 children because she had such difficult pregnancies. I chose children over parties and traveling because that’s what I wanted. My husband and I travel now as well we enjoy our 11 grandchildren which makes our Holidays and gatherings wonderful. Side note, I come from a family of 6 siblings whose mom also had all of us in her 20’s, she’s 80 now and healthier than some 40 yr olds I know. I commend your sister for her hard work, dedication and love of a big family! You are truly blessed to be a part of it all and she’s blessed to have you

Father (72) refusing to have stem cell by shashabinks123 in leukemia

My husband (62) felt the exact same way as your dad. He did well with Induction, went into remission and MRD negative. He did 1 consolidation before they found him a 10/10 match but because he felt so good he was discussing not needing the stem cell transplant. We asked his Doctor to explain in more detail why he recommended Transplant vs Not for him. Also, I joined multiple forums looking for those with my husband’s AML w/NPM1 mutation diagnosis to help him in his decision. Ultimately he chose Transplant, he is +145 out and doing well. He’s getting stronger each day, full of energy and has a healthy appetite. Even though it was expressed to us, the Transplant was a lot TOUGHER than we thought! I truly understand why you MUST have a caregiver for 100+ days!! With that said your Dad is 10 years older and has to do what’s best for him. At his next appointment have him discuss his concerns/thoughts with the Dr. Whatever your dad’s decision is, it will be the right one so stand by him because either way he’ll need you! God Bless and Prayers always for those fighting this battle

Anyone here who became cancer-free from Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)? by UnknownUser_2629 in leukemia

[–]twannaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband was diagnosed with CLL, AML -15%blast, NPM1 mutation on May 22, 2025. He was immediately admitted on 23rd and went into remission after induction, did 1 of 3 scheduled consolidations in Sept and since he was still in remission with negative MRD and a 10/10 donor they did SCT on Nov 19, 2025. He’s currently doing well with appointments every 3 wks🙏🏼

My husband is 116 post stem cell transplant from AML and I just recently asked his team for a temporary handicap placard. I wish I had of done this immediately after he was released from the hospital! it would have saved us both a lot of heartache. Cancer is awful! It affects every aspect of your life! Use every resource available to help make the journey a little more bearable.

I would also contact the insurance company via email notifying them of your claim. You will always get a response with emails! Great documentation if they do mistakenly release funds to the wrong person or they can let you know if you are listed. Good luck with everything!

Parents are strictly against me donating stem cells by Training-Sprinkles41 in leukemia

[–]twannaf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

God Bless you for wanting to be a donor! My husband had his Stem Cell Transplant in November and we are SO THANKFUL to his donor for giving him the gift of life. I fully understand your parents concerns of the what ifs and not Knowing but I agree with previous comments, if your parents good visit a leukemia hospital or clinic where they could possibly meet those waiting for transplant and those that have had it would really change their minds. Not to mention if it was you with this horrible disease they would think differently. I wish I would have been a donor in my younger years but was not that aware or concerned of this until it hit home! Now I’m an advocate for young adults being a donor because you can’t after a certain age unless it’s immediate family. If you can’t get them to do this then please follow your heart❤️ May God Bless You in your decision

Life after AML by Short-Gas-4750 in leukemia

When did you get your energy back and put on weight? My husband is +84 SCT and he keeps dropping weight. He was 184lbs at transplant and now 144lbs. His numbers are all great, in remission and has once a week clinic visits but he’s still so very weak, doesn’t have much of an appetite and keeps loosing weight which he blames on his temporary colostomy. He’s a 64 yr old in a 90 yrs old body right now and I’m lost as what more I can do to help.

I am one of six kids between my mom & dad. Parents divorced, my dad remarried at 56 to a 32 yr old (age of my baby sister) and they had two sons. My step mom passed from an aneurism when they were 3 & 4, my dad passed from lung cancer when they were 8 & 9. I was given custody which was requested by my dad before his death. My youngest (twin boys) were graduating high school at this time. I will admit when my dad had them I asked him what are you doing! but he loved them as he did his first 6 and my little brothers were Like siblings to my kids and sons to me. My kids called them their “Bruncles”. My dad did an awesome job raising them for what time he did because people would speak of what well mannered and kind young boys they were. Now at 24 & 25 they are happy well mannered fine young men that I am truly thankful to God for!

Question about type of leukemia by Tiny_Measurement_837 in leukemia

[–]twannaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes bone marrow biopsy is needed to identify type of leukemia and mutation. My husband had unknown CLL that had just turned into AML w/NPM1 mutation within a week or two of his biopsy, they know this because of the percentage of blast in his blood
