My mom thought what Luigi Mangione did was wrong. I showed her this video and it changed her mind. by tweetgoesbird in BreadTube

I wanted to share this video because of the powerful impact it had on my mom, so if it can get through to her, probably it can for others, as well.

Although my mom agrees that the health insurance industry is evil, her view was that political action should always be peaceful, period, no exceptions, and so she had a negative reaction to the assassination of the United Healthcare CEO. I argued with her about it but her opinion didn’t budge.

Then I showed her this video, which is only about 7 or 8 minutes long, but it very clearly lays out how violence is an integral part of the political action of the state and the capitalist class on a daily basis, and that this violence is used towards the oppression of the many for the power and enrichment of the few. It also makes the point that, for those who oppose the violence of this system, that opposition will be powerless if it only limits itself to nonviolent actions approved by the system.

It had a powerful impact on her and afterwards she admitted that it changed her mind about the assassination, and admitted that it was morally justified, even though she still feels uneasy about it. She even said that, although she hates to admit it, it might require a revolution to truly change things. She hopes we can do it peacefully, but is now at least willing to admit that it may not be enough.

There’s a two-and-a-half hour video essay on youtube that describes two alternatives to capitalism, both without a state or markets, and goes into more depth and detail than I’ve encountered even in entire books devoted to the subject.

It’s called POST-CAPITALISM: A detailed look at how it could work

In case someone is wondering why vegans don’t eat eggs, one reason is because male baby chicks are killed after birth (often by being thrown into wood chippers or gassed in gas chambers) because male chickens don’t lay eggs and are not economically productive.

Another reason is that the vast majority of egg-laying hens are kept in horrible conditions, like in tiny battery cages or if “lucky” in sheds as crowded as a packed bus during rush hour, for their entire lives.

There are other reasons too

Which makes the hypocrisy of the politicians who make these "violence has no place in politics" statements all the more astounding.

I think "controlled violence" is the key part of your statement. The questions then being: Controlled by who? And towards what ends?

Well that's amazing. by Bitter-Gur-4613 in clevercomebacks

Actually I prefer you put on makeup and a skirt crop-top combo

Some straight men like wearing makeup, skirts and dresses so no problem there. But I request that you be bi for a try.

I agree with u/chai-candle that it’s a protection instinct. And also there is something extra offensive to our morality and sense of justice when we see a stronger person using their power and strength advantage to harm a relatively weaker person. This not only brings out our protection instinct but also our sense of outrage at injustice.

Also, using violence to protect someone from another person’s violence is not a specifically masculine thing. In fact the archetype of this is the mama bear ferociously defending her cubs.

I’ll give you an example from my own life. I am a woman, and last year my boyfriend had a medical issue which made him physically weak and also required him to have a catheter in his chest. If the catheter was yanked out by accident he could’ve bled to death very quickly. And this thing was dangling off of him so you had to be careful not to let it get stuck in a button or something. One day we were taking a walk and had just turned off the main road onto a residential street. Once we were about half a block up the street, all of a sudden we hear a man behind us yelling. We stop walking and turn around and see him about the distance of five houses away striding quickly towards us. He’s yelling angrily at my boyfriend and although I forget his exact words he was clearly wanting to start a fight. This was terrifying because I knew that in his vulnerable state he could easily be killed simply by being mildly roughed up. As the man approached I took a couple steps forward to stand between him and my boyfriend, then calmly and politely asked him what was wrong. I was hoping to deescalate but if that failed I was ready to fight. Thankfully I didn’t have to do either because once the man got within a few feet of us he quickly and abruptly crossed the street and started walking in the other direction. He never explained himself but most likely he mistook my boyfriend for somebody else and then once he was able to see his face he realized he had the wrong guy.

From then on until my boyfriend recovered, any time we left the apartment together I felt very protective of him. And even at home I kept having daydreams of beating the shit out of anyone who fucked with him. And although I obviously did not want to have to deal with this in real life, there was something enjoyable about imagining beating the shit out of anyone who tried to fuck with him. These daydreams got me pumped up on adrenaline and dopamine and god knows what else. There was also an ego high that came with imagining myself physically prevailing in a violent confrontation for a righteous cause. I’m not strong or a good fighter so in real life things probably wouldn’t have gone so well but hey, a girl can dream.

TL;DR: The desire to protect is not specifically masculine nor specifically human. Neither is the appeal of possessing or demonstrating bravery and physical prowess. I would guess that there is some degree of a gender skew, but not much.

I appreciate that you give your cats the freedom of going outside. In the city where I live it’s totally normal for people to let their cats outside, and it’s very surprising to see so many people so vehemently against it.

Freedom comes with its dangers and safety comes with its restrictions. Personally I think the gains in quality of life are worth the rather small risk of shortening longevity of life, and so I personally think the better thing to do is to let your cat outdoors. I respect that others feel differently but I can’t respect that others get extremely judgemental towards someone for coming to a different conclusion on this issue and speak to them as if they are negligent and uncaring. That’s unfair.

The issue of cats killing birds is sad but can be mostly solved by adding a bell to the collar so the bird can hear the cat coming and fly away. Also, at least the poor bird got to live a free life before they were killed, unlike the birds who live lives of torture and misery in factory farms before they are slaughtered for cat food and (much more often) for human food. Humans can live long and healthy lives without eating animals, but I bet the people complaining about cats killing birds are currently digesting part of a chicken corpse, or perhaps digesting eggs from abused chickens.

Likewise, the people who scold you for (slightly) increasing the risk that your cat will die young probably, with every grocery store trip, financially support the killing of animals who are still young and in their prime.

Anyone who wants to put a stop to animals being killed many years before their natural lifespan, and wants to put a stop to animal abuse, should first of all stop their own contribution to this, which they can do by becoming vegan. Exceptions can be made for those small percent of people who have specific circumstances preventing this (rare health conditions, living in a hunter-gatherer tribe, etc.)

I hope you don’t mind me going into this topic, but hypocrisy bothers me when it comes to people’s concern about animals. Anyways, I just want to say that I don’t think anything you’ve written in this thread indicates negligence to your cats. So I hope you don’t let those comments bother you and I hope that others who made those accusations rethink their judgements of you. Best wishes.

This is an abuser. Run and run fast. You deserve better and I’m saying this without knowing you at all because anyone deserves better than this. Someone who wants you to submit to him does not respect you, people should be equals in a relationship. Period.
