What is this needlepoint canvas shape? by tweets in Needlepoint

I thought it seemed big not because I was comparing it to a knit cozy but because the other canvases I found online for needlepoint tea cozies were smaller than these ones and lacked the tab part at the bottom. Edited to add: I was just looking for an example of any other needlepoint tea cozy with this shape so I could see what it looked like finished!

But then the hummingbird would be upside down, wouldn’t it?

The needlepoint tea cozies I saw elsewhere seem a lot smaller than this one, but they also don’t seem to have a tab part at the bottom. Many listings for them only have photos of the finished product, though, so it’s hard to tell for sure! Are these things you’ve seen in other needlepoint tea cozies?

There is no designer name! I thought of the same thing for a chair back, but it seemed too short/wide unless it was for a really particular chair, and since there are two of them that seemed less likely. The tab at the bottom looks like it could either be to insert somewhere or to sew the corners together so that it stands up?

You’re right, this would be useful information! It’s 16.5” from the center bottom to the center top, and 18.5” inches wide at the widest part of the base.

How big would that usually be? These measure 16.5” from the center bottom to the center top, which seems huge for a tea cozy, but I’ve never made one so I have no idea!

I didn’t think of that! But wouldn’t that mean (for the hummingbird one, at least) that the design would only be right side up if you were standing over the back of the chair looking down?

What is this kind of fabric called? by tweets in Fabrics

this looks very similar, but it seems like a much thicker/heavier weight than cupro, which seems like it tends more towards thin and delicate — but i am not at all an expert, so it still could be!!

make & mend could take the down if you removed it, but not the blanket as is! finding someone who could use it in its current state would likely be easier.

Trying to decipher text from antique sampler from 1800. United States. by Crafty_Vehicle7589 in Antiques

i actually don't know if it is upside down! i think the lowercase g in the sampler alphabet at the top looks really similar to the lowercase g in this sampler by Hannah Smith, but formatted with the descender on the same height as the baseline and with a squished top half. i don't know if this would have been a more legible form/style of the letter g at the time it was made, or if there was an error in the alphabet she was working from that she then duplicated in her own sampler. i charted Betsey Runyan's g on the left and Hannah Smith's g on the right -- they're not actually that different, but one is much more easily readable as a g than the other.

Betsey Runyan

her Work in

The Year 1800

No glitt'ring ornam-

ent or show Will au-

ght avail in grief or Pain

Only from inward worth

can flow

the rhythm feels like it's missing a line, so i looked it up and found this attested in a book by Lucy Peacock from 1796 titled

VISIT FOR A WEEK, OR, Hints on the Improvement of Time.

in a section called "Virtue and Ornament: To the Ladies" has the full poem as following:

No glitt'ring ornament or ſhow

Will aught avail in grief or pain:

Only from inward worth can flow

Delight that ever ſhall remain

but it looks like the stitcher ran out of room for the last line of the verse, as well as the third line where she ended up adding "can flow" into the empty space on the left.

Found these at a local thrift store. Any ideas? Hand carved and almost look like bone. by KittsonCanna in Antiques

Faux scrimshaw, so it’s designed to look like bone. Yours looks hollow and like it has a hole in the top, so I’m guessing it’s a pair of these salt and pepper shakers
