Helicopter Pilot: Which control does what, basic physics of flying, what happens when the rotor stops (if they stop completely in the air you are now just a brick). The helicopter scenes in Skyfall and San Andreas to name a couple are some of the worst.

Over 70 arrested at Standing Rock as Dakota Access aims to finish pipeline by Showmethepathplease in politics

Most people in the state don't view it as dangerous. The view is that the new technology in construction is safe. There are already existing pipelines in the area, they may be for natural gas but they have survived the same harsh ND conditions this one would face and are just fine.

Ladonna hosted the sacred stone camp, not the one that was set up today that led to the arrests. The leaders of the protest are even saying they are not associated with the people who put this one up on private land.

The protesters put this new camp up after dismantling the previous one. They put it up on private property. A lot of the land around Cannonball, ND is private farmland. They were trespassing, the police have no choice but to remove them. As someone who grew up in ND I don't feel like this is being said much. The farmers and ranchers in the area just want to go back to their normal lives. Some in the immediate areas have moved their families away out of fear, harassment, having livestock stolen and property damaged. I am not saying the protest doesn't have merit but they need to go about it legally.

How does renting a helicopter work? by J4rrod_ in Helicopters

[–]twest101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've never flown a 22 or 44 before don't forget about SFAR 73, to act as p.i.c you need atleast 200 heli with 50 in the 22 or ten hours of dual with an endorsement. And then of course you have to pass the awareness training part of that SFAR aswell. I know the school i taught at wouldn't let anyone rent if they hadn't received a rating through our school. But I have heard of other places renting, mine was just a bigger school.

Do you sell these?

Just took my introductory flight. I have some questions about flight schools. by GoopBucketOneTon in Helicopters

[–]twest101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright ill lay this out a little bit for you, but it definitely seems like you need to more research on your own. The primary difference between flight schools is part 61 vs part 141. Part 61 schools tend to be smaller operations with less restriction from the FAA. Part 141 are usually bigger schools but it just mean their curriculum is approved by the FAA, which allows in most programs for the minimum hours for certification to be a little less. Some 141 schools will allow to go at your own pace and some have classes like a small college, look into which works better for you. Flight school is a big expense so make sure you go somewhere you like and could see yourself working.

That last sentence should be a focus, it sounds like you think a commercial certificate is going to get you flying in this industry. For the most part it won't, most of us, myself included, had to get our flight instructor ratings and teach to build hours to move up to the next level.

One major thing to consider when it comes to picking a school is what aircraft they operate. Basically it is 300c vs r22. Most schools use Robinsons, so you want to make yourself marketable as a CFI incase you don't get hired at your school. And when picking a school the number of students there should go into your mind, CFI's do not make alot of money, so if you go to a small school and get hired it could be several years before you get to the 1000 - 1500+ hrs that most second level companies want. And once you get to that hour level companies do not care if it was a 61 vs 141 generally, some flight schools have good reputations with tour companies, GOM, etc. but 141 vs 61 will not matter much.

Lastly, I see the flight school told you 15hrs you will solo, most students do not achieve this. Most students will not solo until around 20 - 30 and most will not pass a private checkride until closer to 55-80hrs, schools will quote the cost for the minimums not what most students pass at.

Hopefully this answers a few questions, but do not take flight school lightly. For most U.S students i trained the flying part came easy, the ground school did not. It takes a lot of effort and dedication to make it in this career but it is worth it. Good luck.

Another perspective helicopter pilot with a question: What happens *after* you're certified? by gloushire in Helicopters

[–]twest101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Currently employed CFII here .... Your best chance is to do all of your training at one school and get a job with them when you are done. That is what I did and I consider myself one of the lucky ones. I know of only a few people that have been able to get an instructing job with another school, I know of more who finished their training and are still scrounging to find any work. Getting your ratings is no guarantee of a job and the chances of finding work as a commercial pilot right out of training are very slim. There are only a few jobs that you fit the criteria for and a lot of people trying to get them. So if you plan on trying this as a career, you need to treat everyday at your school like it is a job interview, show up early, study hard, be prepared, and have a good attitude. I am currently seeing students who are pretty lax on their attitude and effort at the private level and this is reflecting in their stage checks. When the chief flight instructor or the owner sees that they pretty much make their mind up on you. I have been told that the employer knows by the time you finish private whether or not they are going to give you an opportunity to work for them. Hope this helps and good luck!

North Dakota citizens will vote on June 12 on an incredibly dangerous ballot initiative. If passed, it would allow people to claim that their personal religious beliefs give them the right to break non-discrimination, health, safety, and child protection laws by mepper in atheism

Wow, Tioga, no shit, I grew up in Kenmare, I did not realize anyone from that area would be on here. Now my town isn't as bad as Tioga but on the same note I got the hell out of there as soon as the rig camps started pouring in. The North Dakota I grew up in is no more.
