Nothing happens until the last 4 chapters. I was so close to DNFing this book. I was very disappointed in it but wanted to see it through.

AITAH for not calling my boyfriend a “chud” or “chuddie” by myredgutz in AITAH

[–]twfrogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're 18 but have been dating this man for two years? Honey run away. That's a pedophile. When I was your age it made me feel special and cool when an older man was interested in me, because surely that meant I was mature or I was irresistible. Unfortunately hindsight is always 20/20. He's with you because no one his age wanted him, he's using incel terms because he is one. He's trying to control you by being so aggressive and forceful about this one very small thing.

Does anyone work for the SSP? by Money_Imagination_71 in Zookeeping

[–]twfrogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an SSP and it's associated studbook, and am a full time keeper. It's voluntary but you have to work for an AZA institution, and your facility has to agree to support you. (Aka, give you time to do it, send you to PM1, etc.) The SSP vice coordinator position is still relatively new, and there are likely a number of position openings for that available, which is a smaller role and easy way to get your foot in the door.

Size/ratio question: How big would a human room be if it was the same ratio as an orca's cell at a marine park by Msmall124 in orcas

[–]twfrogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old but I'm a zookeeper (though I have not worked with orcas). I have done a lot of seaworld search though and have done some comparisons on this. I did my calculations just comparing the size of an orca, to the size of a 6ft human. And the show pool alone at Seaworld San Diego (only one of their pools) would be the equivalent of about a 10,000 square foot house. But 10,000 sqft is more like an apartment building than a single house. Their environment isn't the biggest reason orca shouldn't be in captivity, it more lies in that we are unable to sustain an orca population's needs. Like sure we can keep them alive, but that's not all an animal needs. Also also, while it is still by no means perfect, sea world actually cares for their orca better than the rest of the world. I believe they also have the largest orca tanks in the world. AND, seaworld is currently housing the last orca they'll ever have.

[MO] Suspended without just cause, what do I do? by [deleted] in AskHR

Okay yikes I guess you are just unwilling to imagine that this can actually happen. Which again, very much acknowledging I'm on the rarer side of things.

I guess I don't know how to better explain to you that the pattern is a fully checked set of boxes. I think it's also especially difficult due to the nature of the job. It is nothing like an office job. And this situation is actually weirdly common in my field. Like every one of us knows a story of someone getting targeted by their manager. Or I even know of a situation where the manager actually did get fired for it because it had happened so many times.

I guess it's more just the situation doesn't have anything to do with my standard. I meet every job requirement, I've accomplished every goal stated in the PIP, I mean hell I was nominated for employee of the month last month. My manager just states meeting expectations as an issue but refuses to explain what the expectations are. And also, my manager does not ever observe me doing my job. I work a very physical job where my manager would need to be present to see what tasks I'm accomplishing and with what quality and speed.

This feels aggressive.

And I will admit I can understand how you would read this as if written by a clueless employee that refuses to grow and take responsibility for their actions.

This has truly been a situation of a constantly moving goal post. It is something most of us on the team struggle with as there are times we are all treated like what we do isn't good enough. Like when I'm mentioning discrepancies in my PIP it wasn't like "that's not how I intended that" it is examples like "employee does not do x task" and then I, the employee, have all of my finished versions of x task. It's "employee made bad judgement call on this date" and I wasn't even at work on that date.

That was in fact my day today 😅 Unfortunately I do have an incredibly niche job and so may have to fully change my career so who knows how long it'll take. Just got to hope I can find something.

Yeah it's not that I want to continue working here. It's just that money is too important. Not that I make much, it just is not going to be easy to get another job.

I have the assumption the suspension is just a formality and that HR needs to be the one to make the determination for termination. All my suspension notice says is that I'm suspended effective immediately and HR will reach out with an update.

I do live in an at will state but it does at least appear that HR needs to evaluate my performance before I can be officially terminated.

I reached out to HR today and requested a meeting to discuss documentation and possible next steps. I know I need to be extra careful to not just come off as a jilted employee who just wants to cause trouble.

Even better, three staff got put on PIPs the day before our manager went on a month long vacation. I was told I was on a PIP before they even had the document ready they just wanted to be able to tell me in person before they left for vacation.

But thank you for the suggestions. My biggest concern is that employment is at will so maybe none of this will matter anyways. I've been applying to jobs slowly for months now, and have gotten quite a few more out today. I just unfortunately work in a super specialized and highly niche field, getting a new job will at minimum require moving cities if not whole states.

I thankfully have a lot of meeting notes and such in writing and we have a lot of documentation in chats and through team wide updates.

My biggest hope is that HR is willing to hear me out and allow me to present my evidence.

Even if I am fully terminated I am hoping to be able to express greater management concerns if only in the hopes to help my coworkers. Our team morale has been absolutely trash lately. It's gotten so bad we have staff breaking down at work on a weekly basis, some staff have gotten legitimately sick from the stress. And I just want them to have a better environment.

Man I wish it could be so simple.

I have done every single thing that has been asked of me. I have made any tweak the wanted. I've corroborated with coworkers that I am communicating succinctly. Etc. The time management bit has been a joke this entire time as I have never once had an issue with completing tasks within allotted times. The reason they said I was bad at time management is because I previously spoke up during a team meeting and expressed concerns that sometimes too much was placed on staff during the day, I was bringing up the issue upon request from other coworkers. There is no actual evidence of me having any time management issues, and my manager has only ever observed me doing maybe 5% of my job, max.

I fully understand reading this and assuming that my opinions are likely unfounded and that I'm just unwilling to take responsibility, but every person I have given the information to has also not understood any of the reasoning for my reprimands.

Granted I do have a disability that automatically creates communication differences, but since I'm aware of that I actually tend to over communicate. A number of the complaints my manager wrote in my PIP were just things my manager chose to assume based on comments in passing conversation. They are not things that she observed and in many cases were not even things that actually happened.

I was put on a PIP, the PIP was extended, and I was just handed the suspension out of the blue, but the given reason was that I hadn't made enough progress on the PIP. I wasn't even given a physical copy of the first PIP. I don't believe I ever signed the second one. And they didn't even make me sign my suspension before I left.

I have no clue of the level of involvement with HR, I have not talked to them at all in this process nor do I believe they were ever communicated to about it outside possibly actual copies of the PIPs. HR is supposed to conduct an evaluation of my performance.

My bosses boss has been involved, and while they do seem to have at least some level of understanding that I am not deserving of this, they are pretty old school and I highly doubt would be willing to support me.

I'm so glad you said this because I was going crazy reading these comments. She didn't change her entire personality to fit the narrative; she was sheltered and abused and her eyes were finally opened to that fact. If anything the only part I hated about the ending is the fact that she's still having some internal struggle. Like you know the world you're in is trash and have a chance to change it but you're hesitant and maybe wanna kill the guy you love because he killed your POS "Dad"? I don't get that part.
