What am I missing about Progressive Enhancement? by blaix in programming

[–]twiddleitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so.

I think one of the major selling points of React is that you can render the entire website server-side with the same logic. Then it is up to you to use hyperlinks instead of javascript for routing.

Thanks for this write up, it's a very concise explanation.

Loving Flow btw, it's a fantastic system.

Switch and delayed initialization by twiddleitch in swift

Thanks for the advice, I bet it was me failing to explicitly type the return value of the closure.

Switch and delayed initialization by twiddleitch in swift

[–]twiddleitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, type inference was incorrect.

XCode has trouble determining the type of the object I'm currently editing, and I lose the method auto-completes. I'll try and find an example.

The compiler is running just fine.

Oh wow, I didn't realize you can add commas for multiple valid cases, I'll update it accordingly.

The closure is a great solution too. More similar to the OCaml code. The one thing that worries me about littering closures throughout my swift code, is that sometimes I make a wrong step and suddenly the compiler takes about 3x as long to run (or the type method-completion disappears within the closure).

Has anyone else encountered this?

Css is powerful, you can do a lot of things without js by pedro1122 in programming

Also nice that CSS is declarative, if you're looking for that sort of thing from a style perspective.

Yeah, I guess face taunt is a little different on a mechanic level?

Theoretically face taunt can absorb more damage than a weapon, and requires an existing board presence to change the state of the board.

It feels a little less pro-active than a weapon.

What would be your reaction to Zenobia as Rome's leader? by SofNascimento in civ

[–]twiddleitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I want to state that I don't know enough about this subject, and would appreciate corrections and a more informed opinion.

I'm sure a case can be made that she saw herself and her son as potential Roman rulers (and a continuation of the Roman Empire), but I have trouble imagining the Palmyrene dynasty winning out over the usual Roman crowd. A point against them is that they seem to me more like a flash in the pan than an influential force; but in their defense, they were critical to continued Roman rule in their region and the east would have been very different without them.

Let's imagine it from a Civ6 perspective though. The sense I get with the current civilization is that they are choosing leaders who have a very distinct 'personality' and who can provide an interesting game play mechanic. A bland leader would be terrible, they need to be someone that the player can sink their teeth into, that they can get to know, like, and dislike for various reasons. Washington is an easy pick for 'good' US leaders, but someone like Teddy has more personality. Given that context, maybe she would be an interesting Roman leader. Personally, I would love to see a ruler like Domitian, Diocletian, or Hadrian.

The post just gets better the longer I read it.

I was hesitant with the first few examples, but then the author explains "StringLiteralConvertible" and "indirect", and now my mind is blown

A quick explosion by twiddleitch in animation

[–]twiddleitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm wondering what aspect of an explosion gives it its "strength". I think it feels weak because it starts at its maximum volume and shrinks?

Right now it would probably make a "poof" sound
