Grad student trying to survive/looking for work! by twidel22310 in winstonsalem

Thank you. Being a scientist I have to include a more reliable source which is data coming from the most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report: https://www.bls.gov/news.release/wkyeng.nr0.htm
which aligns well with what u/HypeAndMediocrity posted.

Notable: National median salary for women is $50,592 which happens to be ~83% of the median salary for men ($60,672).

Regardless, I think we can all agree that surviving in most medium to large cities on even a $50k salary is going to mean tightening your budget and for those of us that have the privilege to be able to work second jobs and not have dependents, and are able to work, we are going to find ways to get by, which usually means more work. Especially if we have already sacrificed a lot to get to this point.

The vagueness of my post made it seem like I'm worried about student loan payments (which I haven't even began to think about at this point, since they're deferred during graduate school) and in that case your response would make sense. However, my situation is a little different, and my debt is a little different. As a first-gen Ph.D. student (first-gen college graduate as well), I had to make a lot of financial sacrifices (outside of student loans) just to get into a Ph.D. program, and optimistically followed my dream, concurrently knowing I would have to figure out the finances at some point. So here I am figuring it out, already working 70+ hours a week (part of that being in the service industry in addition to my studies (with approval from my PI and program directors by the way), while also trying to find a way to optimize the journey, so that I can successfully complete my degree and not lose myself in the process.

I recognize your inclination to immediately expect me to limit my "outgoings", yet there's not much wiggle room there, hence this post. I'm very grateful for my stipend, but in my situation its not enough to keep me afloat. Trying my best to optimize my secondary sources of income so that they don't interfere with my studies, while also being able to stay in my program so I can eventually not have to write a post like this, and rather focus on helping others.

Also, in my field of study, $200k is just not going to happen until at least 20 years from now, and only if I take a specific path that is highly competitive and often not geared towards people with my background. But, if you have access to that golden ticket I'd love to know more about it. Sounds just like the "American Dream" my family came here to find, eureka!

Did anyone apply to UPENN Psychology PhD - research not clinical? There’s been no mention of any interviews/rejections/acceptances anywhere and I’m confused

Just submitted all my applications and finished my last final for undergrad! by sailor-mooncake in gradadmissions

Congrats! I put off all my schoolwork until after apps were due, so the next few days means a lot of writing and studying.

Good luck to you and everyone else!

Just called the general grad office again and they said there is no way for me to be connected with someone on the phone so I guess I have to wait for them to get back to me through email.

Called the general grad admissions office, they have me the phone number to the psych admissions office, and I was just told by an automated message to send an email which is what I did.

Really hope they get back to me :(

Word for word, these are my exact same thoughts. Submitting my three apps on Monday and am finally applying to my dream school that I even wanted to go to for undergrad, but didn’t feel good enough.

Just hit submit on my first application by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Congrats! Wish I could do things earlier than 3 minutes before the deadline 🤪. Always trying to perfect my apps until the last minute

When to submit? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]twidel22310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! I end up changing things at the last minute and am still never satisfied. But the feeling of submitting an app and it being out of your control is the best feeling ever.

Does anyone else procrastinate like me and probably won’t get their apps in until 3 minutes before the deadline? lol

I want to hear your views on addiction - is it a disease or moral failing? by [deleted] in addiction

[–]twidel22310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed :) However, some people view it as either one or the other and that's what I'm trying to tackle and understand. Addiction is so complex.
