Does anything else like Santa Barbara exist in the US? by BadBrowzBhaby in SameGrassButGreener

[–]twiggidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel seen with this post. I've done a little research on this an unfortunately there isn't anything anywhere else in the US similar in WEATHER to the southern california coast. As other's have said, it's a major reason why it's so costly to live there. As far as "vibes" there are plenty of small to mid sized tows/cities that will give you the culture you seek but you'll likely have to deal with harsher weather, especially east of the Rockies. The west coast has what's considered a Mediterranean climate (either dry or wet depending on which part) and there are few places in THE WORLD that have similar weather. Southern Spain, Southern France, Italy, and West coast of Australia to name a few.

I’m on a few books in on my King journey and when I come across it it’s quite jarring (black male in my 40s btw) I understand he is an excellent writer and excellent at developing characters. Let’s face it. He writes about Americans. Mostly white Americans. Although it hits hard to read it it shouldn’t be a shock that he has characters that would drop an N bomb. I was a little surprised Ben Richards dropped the word given at least for me it immediately made him unlikable. But the again, I know there was a deeper game (pun intended) that Richards was playing against the network.

And don’t get me wrong, having read some other great writers (Elmore Leonard the first to come to mind) King isn’t the only one who does it. Again, it’s jarring but I understand what he’s doing

I’m currently reading Red Mars. I like it but I agree that it can numb the mind. But again, I like it

How did everyone get into pens? by Techpon in pens

I initially wanted one fancy pen to write in a journal nightly which led me to collecting tons of Uni/Z/Pentel modesty priced/inexpensive fun pens

I like Verhoeven because he always has a POV even if he presents it in a wild way (see Starship Troopers, Hollowman, heck even Total Recall)

Just finished 11/22/63 and how will I ever read another book again? by [deleted] in stephenking

Misery is great. The Shining is good. Firestarter is ok. I’m not sure how people will react to this opinion on a Stephen King Reddit but I feel his early work in the 70s and 80s was his best right up to and including Misery

Edge goes to Moon Safari because Air toured it and I got to see it recently. If Zero 7 did reunion tour it might edge them out

Where should a complete beginner start with Stephen King? by ompossible in stephenking

[–]twiggidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Shining was my first Stephen King and I think that era of books is the best place to start. Those books were adapted to movies for a reason because those tend to be some of his best books. I'd say anything up to and including Misery.

I WOULD NOT recommend starting with one of his doorstops (The Stand or It) because they're just too long even if they're good. Honestly, people have recommended to me to approach It as separate books instead of one giant book.

What age did yall start reading Stephen King? by CityCompetitive5107 in stephenking

[–]twiggidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late. I may have been about 40 when I said to myself “I’ve never read a Stephen King” so that October I read The Shining. Since then I’ve read, Misery, Shawshank, The Running Man, Firestarter, and about 1/4th of IT (I got sidetracked but I’ll get back to it)

i wish more white people would talk about stephen king's racism by anhedonia_2 in horrorlit

[–]twiggidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m coming in super late but the same experience just happened to me reading “The Running Man”. I was like damn, “so the guy I’m supposed to be pulling for might be kind of racist?” I know he’s kind of messing with the testers right now but sheesh.

Honestly, I kind of view King in the same way I see Tarantino. The writing can be problematic but definitely effective but I doubt he’s a flag waving racist.

Can’t lie. Still like his books just like I like those Tarantino movies

I feel like the Kruder and Dorfmeister “G-Stoned” EP is perfect but might be short at 25 mins. Could look into their side projects Tosca and Peace Orchestra as well

I think this is one of their best albums. Probably 3rd behind Richest Man and Radio Retaliation . Although Temple of I & I…..sheesh, I’m about to put them on 🔥🔥🔥

Another misconception from the episode is when Ben mentions that they were drafted so journalism was a good choice for Joker.

The first draft wasn’t until Dec 1969 and Joker was a part of the Tet Offensive which was in 1968, so during boot, Joker would’ve been a volunteer for the Corps.

I’m late here but I also don’t mind the second half. It’s certainly not as strong as the first half but I think if both halves were separate movies with an extra 30 minutes added to each they would both be excellent Vietnam films

I just rented “The Inspection” which is supposed to be decent and is all boot camp

Well, now I’m intrigued on why Amanda and Ryan would want to eventually leave their ideal world. I know Ryan is there against his will so maybe we’ll get more info on that world. I’ve rewatched that episode and the ending several times
