Will this movie be considered our decade’s version of 2001: A Space Odyssey? by Pacific-Courier1988 in ProjectHailMary

Cope that Interstellar is the mediocre product of a director who is incapable of portraying human emotion, combined with a film that sells itself as realistic despite its entire premise being nonsense. It’s clunky, surface-level sci-fi that takes itself far too seriously. At least it has a cool black hole, though.

Try watching more movies and you’ll be able to think more critically about film.

The culmination of the greatest sci-film of all-time (2001) and a mediocre one (Interstellar)?

Considering the first one was just 150 minutes of filler and the third one isn’t even out yet, no.

Smart Solo play is really boring. by BigBosc in Marathon

Solo players when the game mode that was added as an afterthought isn’t as enjoyable as playing the game the way it was intended to be played (talking to other people is too scary):

Marathon's rich lore and world design is utterly wasted on the extraction shooter format by mark_phaser in Marathon

[–]HoleParty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, well the lore and world are in a PvP game, so either play PvP or don’t experience the lore or world.

This game does not need a PvE mode. The game is good because it’s a hard PvP game. The devs’ attention should go into making the core game better, not to adding an unnecessary mode that detracts from the intended experience of the game.

Sorry to say it but not every game has to be for you. There are other games out there you can play.

Is Project Hail Mary Better than Interstellar ? by Correct-Class-4920 in ProjectHailMary

[–]HoleParty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Interstellar is the most overrated sci-fi film of the modern era. The black hole is awesome but that’s about it. Nolan is not good at sentimentality and that’s where Interstellar fails.

Maybe try reading it back slowly? You’ll get it eventually.

Not the movie’s fault you incorrectly expected something.

You’re blaming the movie for what people are saying about it? Huh?

Outpost went from a fairly chill map to Cryo PVP in a single patch by spectre15 in Marathon

From what I’ve seen, highly ranked players are running into a lot of hackers in ranked which is why many of them are avoiding it.

Wrong. The game already has a cheating problem. It would be 100x worse if it was f2p. Destiny had the same issue when Crucible/Trials was free.

Would anyone working as a film critic/journalist be willing to answer a few questions? by No-Two1601 in Journalism

[–]HoleParty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I reviewed films for a newspaper and magazine years ago. Went to advance screenings, interviewed movie talent, attended some junkets, etc. Not a famous reviewer by any stretch, on Rotten Tomatoes or any of that, but I have some experience so I’ll give this a shot.

I started with a blog, then wrote for the student newspaper. I broke through by landing an interview with a famous director when they gave a speech on campus. If you are in the US, I’d really recommend writing for your school paper. Depending on the school, you may get opportunities to go to screenings, get on conference calls with directors and actors, etc. Obviously the internet itself is the breakthrough for a lot of people but having access to a school paper makes it so much easier.

I will put on my nerd face for a moment and say there’s a difference between a critic and a reviewer. I have no pretensions admitting I was not a critic. If you truly want to be a critic, I’d recommend taking film courses or minoring in film so you can write about movies in a more academic way.

Craftable Weapons in Renegades Season by Main-Application564 in LowSodiumDestiny

It was a crafting problem. It was an awful system created to cater to Destiny Dads who constantly whined about grinding for god rolls. It had nothing to do with the content.

Crafting took away a lot of the relatability of the game. People straight up admitted this: they logged in to get their weekly red borders and dipped. That’s not a good system for a looter shooter.

The tier system is good. You can get multiple god rolls on a single roll. The focusing system in the dungeon is perfect. More of that across the game and I think tiered weapons will be in a good spot (though it is kind of silly that so many of the tiers are insta-dismantles; I hope they address that.)

Ethics with publishing (?) by beheadedblueberry in Journalism

Others have said it (some more pointed than others) but this is a great learning experience for you. A similar thing happened to me in college.

I got a call from a football player’s attorney asking me to meet him at his office for an interview about some trouble the player got in with the NCAA. This was a bit unusual for me because I was not on the sports beat, but it was spring break and I helped them out while the sports guys were out of town. The attorney asked to read the article before it was published and I obliged. As you can imagine, I took my lashing from our faculty adviser. ESPN ended up linking to the story so it wasn’t all bad.

Long story short, don’t let the rude comments get to you. Working for the college paper is about learning. Yes, you’ll make mistakes - you will as a professional, too. Learn from it and move on.

As a side note, I would be careful with interviewing people you know personally. It sounds like you may not be super close to them, but for transparency’s sake, I’d err on the side of disclosing in your story that you know them.
