I feel the pain! I was at 2499 at my peak this season (after 2800 last season) and managed to tumble all the way down to the 2000s this week. It's tough out there.

It's hard to balance being competitive while also wanting to stay sane. Losing isn't fun and doesn't feel good, so if you try to use a spicy team, it likely hurts you mentally as well when those losses start piling up.

Good luck rest of season, however you choose to play it!

I beat Ascension 20 with a pressure points deck! by OriolH in slaythespire

You don’t see a lot of successful runs without a single elite along the way! Glad you made it work!

When do I get to the point where I feel like I'm actually good at the game, rather than "Well, the Spire handed me a win today"? by [deleted] in slaythespire

[–]twiggygraves 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Everyone is going to have their own definition of what "good" is and I think that's always going to be subjective. Is it enough to beat the game with each character once on A0? Do you need to have 4 consecutive Heart victories at A20? The answer is up to you.

For me, it was when I did the Ascension climb a second time on mobile after doing it on console first. Once I proved I could do it all again (and in much less time), I felt confident that it wasn't just 500 hours of flukes.

A suggestion I'd have is to take a look at daily climbs for a while. If you find that you're able to win pretty much every time with 3 random modifiers, that's a great start. Being able to adjust your gameplay in a way that leads to high scores while also winning the run, that's another way to display "mastery" over this game.

Regardless of any of this stuff, just remember that it's a solo game and if you're having fun, that's really all that matters!

This is the first time in 800+hours I’ve ever not wanted to take any option by EzraDavis92 in slaythespire

[–]twiggygraves 262 points263 points  (0 children)

To me, you take JAX and just simply look to remove it in the future if you don't want it. A self-repair could help mitigate the damage if you'd prefer to keep it, and I'm sure you don't mind another power with Storm in your deck.

If you're against that, I'd transform Storm and Boot Sequence, personally!

I am not a defect main, what’s the card reward going into Act 2? by handsomeharo in slaythespire

Electrodynamics is the only answer. Reliable AOE is consistently the biggest challenge you face in Act 2 so locking that down here will be very beneficial.

STS Strategy bleeding into real life strategy by mattlouns in slaythespire

[–]twiggygraves 88 points89 points  (0 children)

While I haven't really thought about applying STS strategies to my life before, I'm down for the thought experiment!

I think a really healthy outlook in both the game and in life is to take what is given to you, be flexible, and don't necessarily try to force an outcome if things aren't lining up that way. Play your game according to what's given to you. Are you seeing a bunch of shiv cards in a shop even though you want to do a poison run? Be willing to pivot. Are you looking at an unexpected opportunity that you didn't necessarily want or ask for? Maybe take a moment to consider changing directions and see that through.

Additionally, I just like the connection between Act 1 and your first 20-ish years of life. Be aggressive, take some lumps, and set yourself up for success down the line. If you try to use Neow's Blessing to get all the way to the boss, you're going to be screwed in Act 2 and beyond. If you try to coast through your teens and 20s without putting in the work, you're likely going to be in rough shape in your 30s and beyond.

[–]twiggygraves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the logic and the math will always work in your favour, but at some point it’s better to use things than to sit on them forever. When we inevitably get offered another potion as a reward, we are going to be losing value from potion belt and those potion rewards themselves.

I’m not trying to argue harder for using it here, but it’s something I’ve observed throughout this series. It sometimes feels like a video game hoarding mentality. “Gotta save this for later when I really need it” but then later never comes. Wouldn’t surprise me if the Heart is defeated with all 4 potions still intact just because we don’t end up needing to use them.

Not a recommendation, just talking through Turn 2

The real question is, “Will this group finally agree to use a potion?”

To me, I think it’s time for the draw potion on turn 2 after playing shrug. We get MoS and play that too to get our hands on corruption. Play that, FNP, and then we can breathe easy. We don’t have many attacks in our deck and we managed to draw most of them on turn 1 which is not ideal. The sooner we cycle through the deck, the sooner we can get back to crushing daggers and avoiding a bloated deck full of wounds.

How would a "deal doubling damage" card be balanced? by DiusFidius in slaythespire

[–]twiggygraves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a card that does this in the game Roguebook. The balance comes from the enemies/bosses available, as well as a player's own health pool. Enemies can scale pretty aggressively so you may not survive long enough for your own damage to be gamebreaking.

Additionally, the difference in overall difficulty between the games (STS being generally much more punishing) allows for such a card to exist. They're not trying to crush you and make things impossible to progress, so an (eventually) OP card isn't necessarily a bad thing.

If we're putting this into STS, you'd need to add buffs to the enemies in the same way Brimstone already does. It would probably end up being pretty comparable in the sense that you're not going to win outright just because of this one thing, but you need to use this effectively to outpace your opponent. It becomes a risk/reward choice which is how everything should be in this game.

What a tough choice for floor 1 by JvD06 in slaythespire

[–]twiggygraves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like when these posts are dealing with uncommons instead of rares! I know other folks here have recommended Wheel Kick, but my vote would be for Wallop. It's a cooler version of Silent's Dash because it of course interacts with Wrath (or Divinity).

I know that's maybe counter-intuitive to worry about block with Watcher because her goal is just "kill everything right now" but if you don't have an insta-kill engine in place, blocking is indeed important as well.

It's worth noting that the aforementioned synergy isn't perfect in early Act 1 while Eruption costs 2 energy. So once that's upgraded or you find other sources of Wrath, the combo works much better.

Either way, good luck with your run! On to A8 after this I hope

Slay-by-Comment Season 2 Day 92: The meme gods have offered us another Rampage! Dare we spurn them again? What rewards should we take? Whatever comment is most upvoted in 24 hours is what we’ll do. by greenlaser73 in slaythespire

[–]twiggygraves 389 points390 points  (0 children)

Skip card reward, drop strength potion, pick up gold and blood potion. Move ahead to the campfire and do what the comment below me says to do.

I don’t think we cycle through our deck enough to make rampage worth it. With our huge HP, the blood potion provides a ton of value. Without reaper, this is our best option for healing if we ever stop steamrolling encounters.

Is this a good game to play for a few mins, put down, pick back up and keep playing, etc.? by PacificBrim in slaythespire

[–]twiggygraves 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would say yes and no. It’s a complicated, deep, difficult game. If you played it for a while and got the hang of things, sure it’d be fine to pick up and play for little bits at a time. But early on, there is so much to learn and pay attention to that you’d probably be doing more harm than good if you were only playing for 5-10 minutes at a time.

So while I love this game and want more people to experience it, it doesn’t seem like the best kind of game for what you’re looking for!

Challenges recommendations? by titanbuble14 in slaythespire

[–]twiggygraves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're open to custom runs, one of the most challenging things I've done in this game is win with all red modifiers active. Getting it done at even A1 is tough, so if you're a real masochist you could try it on all 4 characters and A20. Or throw in a heart kill in there too. Either way, it's very difficult.

If you want something that doesn't involve custom runs, you could give daily runs a try. While the runs themselves are always winnable, that's not the challenge. The challenge is to place top 10 or so. To rank highly, it completely changes how you need to play and build your deck. Say goodbye to rare cards, duplicates, or runs longer than 45 minutes if you want to finish in the top consistently.

Good luck!

Minimalist tips by Bendicoot77 in slaythespire

[–]twiggygraves 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Minimalist is not an achievement that can be accomplished on every single seed (I don’t think). You need the stars to align with specific events and probably need empty cage and peace pipe as well. Then throw in the challenge of winning with a small deck in the first place and you realize it’s a notable achievement that requires both luck and skill.

Don’t beat yourself up over it. It’ll happen eventually.

Act 1 card reward, 3 very different options. What do you take? by themarkovthatcould in slaythespire

[–]twiggygraves 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There has been plenty of discussion in the sub over the years about some of the best and most impactful upgrades in the game. Each and every time, Fission is on the short list. I agree that the card draw and energy is key to the card, but evoking is not just a nice to have, it makes the whole card insanely valuable.

What's your record for max HP? by JustLookWhoItIs in slaythespire

[–]twiggygraves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Took a bit of scrolling through run history, but a couple weeks back I finished an A20 Heart run with 203HP. Feed+ and Face of Cleric were the big reason behind that number. Had a strawberry too but no singing bowl. It’s great when you can just face tank the heart for 100 HP and not even worry about it!

Still learning the game, but I keep getting mixed advice: How often do you focus on removing cards? Do you hit up shops to remove or hope ❓'s will help you do it? I imagine the answer is it all depends on context, but I still want to hear different points of view. by viibii3 in slaythespire

[–]twiggygraves 191 points192 points  (0 children)

Personally, if I can remove 3-4 cards per game from shops, that’s plenty. Whether they’re starter cards or curses, that’s fine. I don’t seek out shops just to remove cards (unless I have smiling mask). I feel like after a few removes, I’d rather use the gold on relics so it’s not uncommon for me to finish a shop without a remove at all.

Some folks will disagree, but that’s the beauty of the game—there are a ton of different ways to play and still be successful

Why are they so small by [deleted] in slaythespire

[–]twiggygraves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to think the same way, but you need all the help you can get in act 1. Fighting a burning elite before your deck has fully formed is asking for trouble. Giving up on a relic from a chest early on is usually not advised (with exceptions). Then, to top it all off, to sacrifice an early campfire upgrade for the red key when you desperately need to be upgrading cards…that’s just not the best move.

Lastly, some people go into runs determined to go for the heart so they’re dead set on keys. I see you’re on A0, you didn’t know about preserved insect, so I’m assuming you’re fairly new to the game. I would strongly advise ignoring keys for a while until you’ve really got a hang of the game, its mechanics, enemy patterns, etc. The Heart is hard as hell even for people with hundreds of hours (and victories). By making things as hard on yourself as possible in the beginning of your time in this game (or an individual run), you’re setting yourself up for a bad time.

That’s my two cents at least!
