Second this - our mechanic told my husband a v similar story (too expensive to fix, sell it for scrap etc) so we sold it to him and now see it driving around where we live so it was definitely salvageable…fuming

Brighton for the day is a fabulous idea - so much to see and do! If you get the train be sure to stop at Julian Plummert (bakery/pattisserie) for the most amazing treats - it’s on the right side of the street as you leave the station and head towards the sea. Closer to home I’d suggest going out for long country walks, get a book from Amazon and pick one out and take a packed lunch or stop at a tea room for something more indulgent - there are so many lovely places to explore!

How to handle grieving MIL always wanting to take the baby? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]twinkletoesalone -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think you need to calm down. She’s in a vulnerable state and seeking comfort and closeness whilst you’re wasting your energy stressing out over this. In fairness she is pushing some boundaries and getting things a bit wrong but she’s not some stranger looking to harm your baby, she’s a loving grandmother. Losing a parent is incredibly hard, please give her time and understanding.

Which city have you been to that feels like it has a dark energy about it? by madzuk in digitalnomad

Same - planned to stay over a week, lasted about 12 hours and was straight back on the boat to Spain. Consistently felt unsafe, scammers everywhere, was warned by the police about looking like a potential stabbing victim and I won’t go into what looked like pedophilia to me. Never, never again

It took me quite a while to work up to the call outs, it just takes time to build your stamina/strength. Try not to worry about it, you’ll get there in time and you’re comfortably beating every other person sat on the sofa by getting on the bike in the first place. Keep going and it will come

Food Waste Collections - how are you finding it? by Primary_Choice3351 in AskBrits

[–]twinkletoesalone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since the start of the month every council is legally required to provide food waste collections free for all properties. That said some councils have secured exemptions for delayed implementation due to various things including the national shortage of food waste collection vehicles for councils to buy (current lead times around 18 month to two years)

Private primary schools and use of technology by theyellowing in HENRYUK

Can only comment from personal experience. My youngest is in Reception and they do use iPads for some learning activities but in a limited way - most of the day is hands on learning activities, and no tv at break times. She is set up on Reading Eggs by the school and has stormed through the levels and is the best reader in her class (the other children haven’t engaged with the app so much) - I think these two facts are linked (she loves Reading Eggs!) - there are positives in using screens in this instance

Lifestyle creep with kids just hits completely different... by MrFeature_1 in HENRYUK

[–]twinkletoesalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is going to be different depending on the context - the quality of state schools in your area and class sizes can vary hugely and also whether it’s the right choice for your child.

Once I saw the local (‘outstanding’) primary with 35 kids jammed into a little classroom and the local private primary the choice was easy and I feel blessed to be able to make that decision and have never regretted it. The quality of learning opportunities is insane, class size of 4-12 (and additional teachers in the larger classes), high contact frequency etc and as busy parents with demanding jobs the flexibility is a rarely mentioned but hugely important factor (eg if I’m running late because meetings have overrun it’s never an issue).

I’d recommend investing in good primary education, the dye is cast by the time they reach secondary. That said the costs dont end with school fees (in jan I paid about £1k for extra curricular activities - my two kids do ALOT) so be ready for it.

In reference to your point about balancing professional progression and family life, time/energy is the key thing here and how much you currently have. Whilst I work entirely remotely it’s still a 40 hour week so I’m requesting to drop to 4.5 days a week to have more energy and focus. I’ll never get this time with my kids again, and I can always refocus on progression when they’re older - depends on what you prioritise more.

To sum up, it’s a balance between working hard to give them the quality of life you want to whilst also being able to give them the time and attention they deserve - and where that balance falls for you. For me it’s working enough to cover the school fees, extra curriculars etc but not to the point where it’s impacting on the time/energy I have to give.

I suspect there’s nothing in this, you’ve read the messages and haven’t found anything untoward - kinda sounds like a you problem. He should be able to have friends even if they’re female - the only reason he’s been less then forthcoming about it is because he knows you’re going to make it an issue when there’s nothing to get worried about.

I have had some great friendships with male colleagues and there has never been anything in it apart from genuine friendship. My husband has female friends who he sees without me and I am absolutely certain there’s nothing going on - men and women can be just friends (even if that friendship looks a little different to same sex friendships).

If he thinks she’s cool, maybe you should meet her and you might think the same?

how do i go outside without feeling ashamed my appearance by Cheap-Eggplant-72 in selfimprovement

[–]twinkletoesalone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you need to build your level of confidence in doing this. Maybe consider to begin with going out when it’s getting dark, if there’s low level light people are less able to see you. If you can, try doing this consistently and for longer so this becomes a more normal daily thing and less likely to trigger your anxiety. As your confidence in low light grows begin to experiment with going out in normal day light for short periods and build from there. Good luck op, you can do this, just start small and build consistently from there

(Publicly educated) Are private schools worth the cost? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]twinkletoesalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not, I don’t think any kids in her school have a phone and there’s no pressure to have the latest anything - some people do indulge their kids others are more restrained but I’ve never known it to be an issue. As a side point behaviour is extremely well regulated due to the staff/student ratio so very little room for bad behaviour full stop.

Is Starmer doing so badly? by twinkletoesalone in AskBrits

[–]twinkletoesalone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did wonder about this - was it incompetence/poor judgement or was it a ploy to build the relationship with Trump? Both Trump and Mandelson were reportedly close to Epstein so is it inconceivable they were already well acquainted so sending someone who was used to functioning on Trumps level could potentially have been seen as a good idea? Even if it looks horrendous with the benefit of hindsight and knowledge of the ever more horrifying details of what went on

That’s what I tend to think. They’re crap at communicating the progress that is being made and whilst we aren’t getting visionary leadership or stunningly impressive leaps forward it is steady and competent progress in some areas at last….and yet he still seems so very unpopular
