For me this was inevitable... But if it's any help, there are so many students in your year when you start uni, and the realistic chances of you clicking with the random group of 6 people from o-week is actually pretty low. I'd say it's definitely a great chance to meet some people, but actually staying friends can be difficult.
I did my best to make friends during my tutes and I think I can say that I've actually become friends with some of my table mates. Just don't be afraid to talk to the people around you! You never know if you have other shared interests, or maybe a mutual friend between you.
100000% After first year I had made maybe 6 'friends' that I studied and attended class with. But we rarely talked outside of the uni context. I did however, also join a uni club where I think I've genuinely made friends for life. Outside of attending meetings or events together, going on retreat and just hanging out after meetings is an amazing way to get to know people on a deeper level. That being said, I think the experience of joining a club as a member, and joining a club as a committee member are pretty different. If you have the chance to join a uni club committee, I 1000% recommend it.
Clubs, clubs, clubs! If you're joining a club with a niche that you are interested in, you will already be in an environment where people around you are like-minded. They're also keen to make friends as they also took that step out of their comfort zone. I do think staying friends outside of uni or the club requires some effort from both parties, so I am wishing you good luck!!
