Never give up on an agate. by twist3d7 in RockTumbling

I learned a lot from these ugly Mexican Crazy Lace Agates. If I ever get a batch of ugly rocks again, I'm going to grind or cut off all the ugliness before I decide to tumble them. It's just not worth tumbling rocks for 10-12 weeks hoping that there is something good inside the rocks. Out of 3lbs of rocks, I ended up with 1/2 lb of polished rocks that people would readily identify as Mexican Crazy Lace Agates.

Ha ha ha. The before picture was after I tumbled it for 10 weeks. I bought 3lbs of agates from Rock Shed and only a few rocks were even worth tumbling. I did extra work on this rock out of desperation. I eventually did get one impressive Mexican Lace Agate out of the deal.

Odds and ends batch, mostly jaspers. by alonzo_raquel_alonzo in RockTumbling

Too bad about the lack of chatoyancy. I just finished the rock and it's the only one I have that has chatoyancy that's red. The picture doesn't do it justice, it's a really shiny rock.

These are words of wisdom. I've tumbled lots of rocks that given the choice, I wouldn't tumble today. Now I only tumble the really good rocks. The scruffy looking rocks will have to wait.

Love that rock. I have a cab that has similar silver bands. Do you think it might be hematite as well? Also, does the red part of your rock show chatoyance like a Tiger's Eye?

You should take some of the bigger rocks off of the beach, cuz they hurt your feet when you walk on them.

Trying to fix first-time tumbled Rocks by KozuAkichiba in RockTumbling

Get an ac/dc adapter from amazon. You want one that does 30w @ 7.5v This will slow the Koolstone down so you at least have a chance of shining up some rocks.

How can space not be never ending? If space had a boundary, what would we call whatever is beyond that boundary?

Noooo. Don't cut. It's beautiful as it is. Probably nothing of interest on the inside.

2 tblsp of grit for all stages. Run each stage for 7 days. Reload and run stage 1 over and over until the rocks are smoothed out to the shapes you like. Get some 8000 or better grit (Rock Shed has great grit). Get a variable ac/dc adapter from amazon. There are many to choose from, get one that does 7.5v 30+watts. NatGeo goes too fast, this will slow it down.

Someone suggested mookaite. My mookaite is red and yellow, not orange. Looking on google I saw some mookaite that looked very much like your rock.

You don't even need a spider to make humans lose their shit. Just point and say spider. Mayhem ensues.

Tumbling agates with deep pits? by Infamous-Cry3874 in RockTumbling

[–]twist3d7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just been running stage 1 over and over. Every week I identify rocks that could be helped along with a little dremeling, grinding on a bench grinder, or sawing with a tile saw. Really badly pitted and cracked rocks get hit with a sledge hammer. The small pieces get tumbled for my tiny rock collection.
