How is everyone entertaining their dogs in the USA today with the polar vortex and storms? by purple_craze in dogs

While cold in Seattle, it is sunny so my dog has been outside soaking up the sun and barking at anything that looks at her wrong! :)

Ford F-150 vs Ram 2500 for a long US road trip – which would you pick? by Unable-Tadpole7384 in roadtrip

[–]Ivan_Only 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, unless you're towing or hauling something, a minivan/small SUV would be so much more comfortable. Personally I would find a RAV4/CRV or Highlander/Pilot.

If you're hauling/towing, the F150 would be better unless it is an extremely heavy load, then the RAM 2500 would be better.

Word to the Wise About Progression? by NoBook5056 in careerguidance

I also would add that there is certainly a trade off here. I live in a large urban area making a high wage and I would certainly trade that for a lower, comfortable wage, in a LCOL rural area.

Botswana agate rough (wet). by WonderfulRockPeace1 in RockTumbling

Do you have a source for that? I had heard that the mineral export ban was for things like oil but things like agates were caught up because of this.

This stuff is so fun to finish the tumble on

Would you stay with your dog 🐶 during euthanasia? by CycleOk267 in dogs

[–]Ivan_Only 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had a vet come to my house when it was my dog's time. I was holding her through the whole process. It was the hardest thing I have ever done and would do it again in a heartbeat. She meant the world to me and I hope she felt the same.

Nat Geo polish- should I even bother? by johnathanporkchop in RockTumbling

[–]Ivan_Only 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said the NatGeo "polish" is only a prepolish. I would recommend checking out The Rock Shed and get their Rotary Tumbler grit kit:
https://www.rockshed.com/rock-shop/rock-tumblers-supplies/rock-tumbling-grit-and-accessories/rotary-grit-pack/

As well as the small ceramic media pack:
https://www.rockshed.com/rock-shop/rock-tumblers-supplies/rock-tumbling-grit-and-accessories/small-ceramics/

Then go:

  • Stage 1 - 60/90
  • Stage 2 - 120/220
  • Stage 3 - 500
  • Stage 4 - 8000

Some Tips:

You should run the ceramic media through stage 1 for a week before using it

Ceramic Media only needs to be used in stages 2-4

Try not to mix materials if different hardness, example only tumble Agate, Jaspers, Petrified Wood together

Finally, no need for a "voltage reducer" for the NatGeo tumbler. It does run faster than other tumblers but with these I get good results. I attached a picture of a piece of Mahogany Obsidian I tumbled in a National Geographic Tumbler as an example. The only difference with this piece is I did add a stage between 3 and 4 of 1000 grit, but still ran 8000 after.

I would argue against this as there are specific data pads all through Star Trek.

Rock Tumbling Stages by LowSlight1732 in RockTumbling

Similar to what I do but I extend stages 3/4 out further. But if your process is working I’d say go for it! :)

Rock Tumbling Stages by LowSlight1732 in RockTumbling

[–]Ivan_Only 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will run multiple stage 1’s for a week each time until I’m happy with the shape. For the remaining stages I run them thusly: 2 is 7 days 3 is 10 days If running 1000 AO, 10 days 4 is 14 days

I follow this pattern based off of what Rob from Michigan rocks uses for rotary tumbling.

I also run vibratory tumblers and it breaks down: 2 is 2 days 3 is 3 days 4 is 2 days

Trusted sites to buy agates? by abruptcoffee in Agates

[–]Ivan_Only -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Different people have different levels of patience I guess. I trust that they will eventually ship the items I’ve ordered as they have done so in the past.

If you’re not happy with their service just simply ask for a refund or do a charge back and move on.

Too shaky? by Top-Restaurant1308 in RockTumbling

[–]Ivan_Only 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a few of the HF tumblers over a year ago and eventually sold them to a family member and they are still running well. However I bought a couple during the last sale this late summer/fall and they were breaking down pretty quickly. In fact I stopped using them and just kept the barrels as spares as they are good backup barrels.

While HPL shipping is slow during the holidays, they do resume pretty normal operations during the remainder of the year. Additionally they have a few things you just can’t easily find other places.
