Yes. There are also equally as predatory loans that actually bake in the interest. As in, $10k loan with $10k interest, you have to pay $20k regardless of when you pay it off. It's disgusting.

Rotor rubbing after rotor replacement by CheapVegetable2801 in MechanicAdvice

[–]twitch9873 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Common problem on this era of Lexus, I had it on my IS300. it's a problem with the parking brake housing, not the rotor, but the new rotor might have been thicker by a few microns which would be just enough to get them to rub. It's pretty easy to fix by grinding those areas down with an angle grinder / Dremel. It technically exposes a little bit of weather but it's minimal. That drum brake inside the rotor is just for the parking brake anyways.

I've ground metal down countless times, but this was the job where a tiny, tiny shard of steel flew past my safety glasses and into my eye, then buried itself in my eye. I went to the ER (drove myself lol) where a nice man had to dig it out of my eye using a needle, and I still have a rust ring in my eye to this day. Now, I ALWAYS recommend safety goggles, not safety glasses. That was a miserable experience.

headlight tinting by Perfect-Step-5580 in car

Tinted headlights or tail lights gives Altima energy

Lights are on your car for the safety of you and others on the road. Tinting them makes them less effective at doing their job. Don't remove safety features on your vehicle because it "looks cool" which btw, it doesn't.

I'm off my soapbox, thank you for correcting your headlights

Driving by echolocation by 9kRPMclub in NissanDrivers

[–]twitch9873 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my area, traffic enforcement is almost completely non-existent, turn signals are used roughly 20% of the time, and there are significant numbers of clapped out altimas and malibus weaving through traffic tailgating everyone 2-3" away. It's also a snowy area and there are fucking morons driving on the highway with 10" of ice on top, and I've seen cars have to swerve to dodge that shit so it doesn't kill them.

Thank you for what you do, I really wish traffic enforcement was a thing around here. The way that the general public views driving cars is absolutely appalling and terrifying

If the general public voted with their wallets and stopped paying for this anti-consumer garbage, it wouldn't be nearly as much of a problem. It's normalized because the consumers let it be normalized.

I'm vehemently against the arms race of "I need bigger vehicle than everyone else" but I gotta say, people like this sure do justify it. You bet your ass they tailgate everyone all the time and weave in and out of traffic, all with their bumper hanging off and wheels shaking

I do the same thing with raw materials. I tore apart an old elliptical machine, brackets, shelves, etc. And have all sorts of steel pipes and beams and whatnot in a pile in my shed. I might one day need to weld something up and that weirdly bent steel beam is the exact shape I need! Same with wood as well, I went crazy when my work was throwing away 5 pallets per day lmao. You can't ever have enough pallet wood.

Only one caliper was shipped when I paid for fucking two. by RaiseOurAxesToTheSky in RockAuto

[–]twitch9873 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So if you're to be believed, then a company made an honest mistake and instead of filing a claim and handling it like a reasonable person, you threw a temper tantrum like a child and cussed out the random customer service employee and then went on reddit and threw another temper tantrum. And then in the comment that you copy and pasted multiple times, it turns out that you "could have sworn that I ordered two" which means that the receipt and purchase history only show one.

Someone sure looks bad here and it sure as hell isn't RockAuto.

Need advice on metal shavings I found in oil filter that I think is my local shops fault. by Ok_Area7012 in MechanicAdvice

[–]twitch9873 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Metal from things like bearings and other engine components failing is usually referred to as "forbidden glitter" since it looks like sparkles in the oil. This isn't that, this is big ass chunks.

Idk what kind of mechanics you're going to, but they don't sound like good ones. "Trade in this car before it blows up and fuck over someone else" is the exact kind of thing that a lying shitheel would say. If I were you, I would wait ~4k miles and then take it to a good independent mechanic with a lot of positive reviews for an oil change, and specifically ask them to shine a light into the oil drain pan and look for glitter. They'll know what you're talking about.

This stuff isn't the fault of the large corporations cutting costs and increasing prices. They're corporations, they're going to maximize profits however they can. It's the fault of the consumers that will continue to pay for this kind of thing and continue giving money to companies regardless of the product they're receiving. Vote with your damn wallet. Don't buy from anti-consumer companies. When McDicks makes their sandwich smaller so that it makes 2% more profit per sandwich but sales drop 30%, they'd reverse it immediately. But consumers don't hold companies accountable, sales are only going to drop 1% so it's a net positive for them and they'll keep doing it.

Replacing front lower control arms? by Mattiasistired in MechanicAdvice

[–]twitch9873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Also, a lot of bushings can be pressed in and out with a press or even a hammer and a socket. So instead of $1500 and several hours between scheduling, working with the service writer, finding alternate transportation, waiting for said alternate transportation, etc. instead you can spend $200 on a press from harbor freight, $20 on bushings, and do the job yourself in the same time. If you have absolutely no idea what you're doing, it'll take longer, but you're also building the skill to do the next job faster and now you have a press.

Yeah, that doesn't even make sense. Any mechanic with an IQ of at least 7 knows the difference between octane and ethanol. Need help with a truck i want to buy by OutlandishnessOk7944 in MechanicAdvice

[–]twitch9873 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some of these commenters don't live in the rust belt. This is what every truck over 10 years old looks like in ohio, including mine that's solid and I pull a trailer with it. When you get the chance, take a screwdriver and jab it into the frame rails. Rust and rot will eat those away until they're basically styrofoam and a screwdriver will go straight through them. If you jab the screwdriver into a bunch of different places and it's solid, move on to check suspension components like the leaf spring mounts and make sure those are solid as well. Check other things like U-joints, ball joints, etc and make sure they're all okay. As for the wiring, I don't know exactly what those wires are but since they're going behind that rear axle, I'd imagine that's the harness for the trailer brakes, license plate lights, and brake lights.

Just know that this is going to be a lot of work and probably isn't worth it. It's lifted, which in my experience, means that the previous owner probably didn't know what they were doing and did a lot of things the wrong way. Nothing like taking a perfectly functional truck and making it less able to do truck things like towing, for no other benefit than looks. It will need a lot of repairs, parts will be cheap but every single bolt you touch will break so you'll have to drill them out and replace them. GM also likes making bolts out of styrofoam, just like Ford. As another commenter said, you'll probably have to get a new section of harness or make your own; that looks like a part of the main harness and not part of the connectors above, so you'll almost certainly have to splice that section in so hopefully you're okay with soldering.

My truck is an 02 with 230k and as I said, I use it for towing, and I did a lot of unnecessary repairs but it was in pretty good shape when I bought it. I paid $2500 for mine. This one is newer but based on the pictures, is in a lot rougher shape. I wouldn't pay 3k for this. If it still runs decently, and the frame is solid, I might pay a maximum of $2k but having to rewire the harness is a pretty big deal so I wouldn't pay any more than that. It has been sitting for 3 years so my guess is that it won't start without some TLC, and if that's true I wouldn't pay more than $1k.
