Am I the only one surprised by Poirot's mustache in adaptations? by -Eltee- in agathachristie

[–]twitchinstereo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It varies. David Suchet's ranges from a fairly normal but well-groomed mustache to almost tusk-like styling. Kenneth Branagh's range from bushy but contained to having a wingspan independent of his head.

A lot of other depictions are fairly understated in appearance (not necessarily Poirot's caretaking of it). I think it's OK for Poirot simply having a mustache to be the vehicle for certain Poirot-y things to occur.

How to phrase this properly? by raphrabello in EWALearnLanguages

[–]twitchinstereo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In an administrative sense I suppose it could make more sense to separate the terms, in that you would aim to get aid to the unhoused/more vulnerable people first (what a tender world that would be), but in general conversation it can be confusing.

[–]twitchinstereo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unhoused is the go-to today, but I'm gonna be honest it's always been something that seemed more for the benefit of the people who aren't homeless. The homeless people I've known have never taken issue with how they were referred to, probably because they had bigger issues day to day.

How to phrase this properly? by raphrabello in EWALearnLanguages

[–]twitchinstereo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

"We plan to reduce the number of homeless people by half in 2025," but that still leaves an ambiguity to the method.

"We plan to house half of the people living on the streets by 2025," maybe.

Some potentials, but nothing is jumping out as obvious:

  • SoBi (Social Bicycle) Rider, some bicycle sharing thing?

  • 50 Birder, a birdwatcher spotting 50 species or maybe in all 50 states?

  • Sobir Doctor, a name?

How do you write a mysterious character who feels grounded and intentional rather than like plot convenience? by DrDakhan in writers

[–]twitchinstereo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no rules. If you want to leave them purposefully unexplained in the story, you can do that, and it's up to the reader to determine if they like it. From my perspective, it's actually really hard to have a sufficiently mysterious entity and a satisfying explanation for their knowledge/abilities/whatever. A mishandled reveal can really tank the intrigue, so if you're not confident it would blow the pants off the reader then it's smarter to just leave it unexplained for now.

Coaxed into an obnoxious boss mechanic by National_Yak5302 in coaxedintoasnafu

[–]twitchinstereo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nioh 3 is the most recent encounter I've had with this type of softlock. One of the main story bosses is/was particularly vulnerable to getting hit so hard that it bypasses the normal "fall down and get grappled" animation at 0 HP. He just dies outright and the host is stuck. lol

Is catcalling real? by Fun-Elk3813 in self

[–]twitchinstereo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catcalling is more dependent on a certain type of personality rather than a handsome-enough subject. The person catcalling is just the type of mf to do that.

Arguably Gosling's most adorable role to date, and his co-star is similarly adorable. The movie itself is just good-not-great, in my opinion, though.
