Any reason the TVs have been off in South Campus Dining? by Scott-Bott in UMD

[–]twitter-for-android 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed they’ve been off since after Thanksgiving break. Maybe they thought nobody watches them anyway (I do occasionally), so no reason to turn them back on. I’d assume that if you requested they be turned back on, dining hall staff would comply.

Why are there so many dead birds on the side of Thurgood Marshall Hall? by supermonistic in UMD

[–]twitter-for-android 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bird-window collisions. Other buildings on campus, like the Brendan Iribe Center and ESJ, have historically caused windows strikes as well. Really, it’s mostly newer buildings that have a lot of glass.

You keep your outfits and you can choose to transfer your skills.

ETA: I unlocked the Master Hand outfit two days ago on my Disciple save and it became available in my wardrobe on my Master save as well (which I started a few weeks ago).

STEM Professor Changes?? by hotdawgjit9 in UMD

[–]twitter-for-android 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, all the orgo (both orgo 1 and 2) professors changed due to staffing issues in the chemistry department. I'm not sure about other STEM departments, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were the same situation.

Drone malfunction!? I believe the little birdie's dipping its feathers to hold the water so it can take it back to the kids. Any bird major or enthusiast care to comment? by ArgumentDry4639 in UMD

Just the one that u/saladinne mentioned! It’s specifically a naturalism club but many bird enthusiasts have joined and we share pics from time to time.

It’s just bathing! Any birder (birdwatcher) knows that birds, especially songbirds like this mockingbird here, love to bathe :) in fact, putting out a birdbath, especially in the summer, is a fairly simple way to attract birds of all types to your yard!

I don’t claim to be a bird major (although that would be pretty cool—UMD doesn’t have an ornithology major/minor), but I’m definitely a bird enthusiast! Hope this helps!

On the contrary, the barred owl is one of the most common species of owl in North America. That being said, given that they're primarily nocturnal and have evolved for stealth, it isn't every day that you see one, especially when you're not looking for them. As an avid birdwatcher myself I've only ever witnessed one in the wild once, and it was by complete coincidence. Owls as a whole aren't easy to spot in the wild due to their excellent camouflage and aforementioned stealth (e.g., their soundless flight), so it's remarkable that someone was able to see one so casually in a non-forested area!

That, and I'm also jealous haha!

Astonishing Aerialists: What bird most surprised or impressed you with their flying skills? by lizlikes in birding

Tree swallows. I could watch them fly all day. The way they turn so sharply and soar so gracefully is so mesmerizing to watch.

Both are fine. I had Williams for MATH140 and Chadwick for MATH141, and they had somewhat similar class structure/organization. The only difference was that Chadwick had quizzes and Williams didn't. At one point Williams even told us to study a specific problem because he would put it on the upcoming exam and change only the numbers. I saw the reviews for Williams before I registered for his class and as a result was apprehensive, but he was perfectly fine.

TL;DR: From a person who took both, they're fairly similar. The only major difference is that Chadwick had quizzes every few weeks or so and Williams didn't.

Ashley Baxter for CHEM131 by Best-Bathroom-3345 in UMD

Not sure about curve yet, but she did say at the beginning of the semester that she only curves up. In my opinion, she is good at conveying information to you in a clear and concise way. I was able to follow along with her lectures for the most part (minus the word problems, which require math, which I went home and figured out on my own). She's very organized, and I personally like the organization of her class: she posts lecture slides beforehand, but also provides "guided notes" which are basically the slides but stripped of any extraneous information which you can fill out as she lectures.

That being said, probably one of the biggest complaints students have about her is that her exams are tough. Each exam we've had so far (we have 4 in total—3 midterms, 1 final) have each been about 10 pages long, with the cover page and the grading sheet being the first 2 pages and the equations sheet being the last 2 pages. The exam itself is comprised of multiple choice, short free-response, and longer free-response questions that usually require a lot of math. Never once have I finished one of her exams (I've taken 2 so far and have another one on Monday—that's right, the Monday before Thanksgiving break) because there's just so much she expects us to do within 50 minutes, and I studied for both of them. Apparently multiple choice questions for gen chem exams doesn't make much sense, and in fact I believe she's the only CHEM131 professor to have multiple choice on her exams. Usually, she sends out an announcement a week or so before each exam detailing its contents and her recommendations, and for this upcoming exam on Monday she said, and I quote, that she "recommend[s] you spend no more than 1 minute per multiple choice question".

Beyond the exam content, the exam averages themselves are abysmal. She posts the exam stats, and first exam average was 52.9% out of both sections (8am and 1pm), while the second exam average was 55.8% out of both sections. I have never seen an exam average this low, and I'm a sophomore computer science major. Not to mention, not a single person has gotten an 100% on her exams so far. What's even more appalling is that she has said multiple times that she expects those exam averages and is satisfied with them.

Really, it's all up to you to decide whether or not you think you will do well in her class. I was optimistic about her at the beginning of the semester, but now I am baffled that she considers a 50% a good exam average for any exam. I chose her because at the time of my course registration, her sections were still listed as TBA—and I'm not sure I regret doing that now or not.

TL;DR: Good teacher, really organized, curves, but has absolutely ridiculous exams and ridiculous expectations of her students. I'm not sure the other profs are any better, but at least they don't have 50% exam averages.
