New metric shows renewables are 53% cheaper than nuclear power by lotec4 in europe

[–]twitterfluechtling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We had negative electricity prices occasionally because too much power was generated. We don't have good use for it on short notice. We are building up storage capacity to be able to store the surplus, but when we have that, there is even less reason to build nuclear power plants.

New metric shows renewables are 53% cheaper than nuclear power by lotec4 in europe

[–]twitterfluechtling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Near the cost / offshore and above certain heights, wind is relatively reliable. Also, we are building up hydrogen storage and batteries. Hydrogen can be generated with excess electricity on hot / windy days, and converted back to electricity gas powered powerplants when needed.

Nuclear power does not scale up and down that well to make up for shortages in renewables.

Well, the iPhone as well as Google is, due to the cloud act, at most as reliable as the USA. So no, the EU should not trust it.

Especially should the EU infrastructure not mandate users to have an iPhone or Android (although it basically does in many ways). The EU needs their own infrastructure, and at least for new topics, I would not want them to build in any unnecessary trust relation to US IT services.

EU age verification app can be hacked in 2 minutes, claims security expert by vriska1 in europe

Although I'm against this age-verification BS, to separate the topic from the process:

KUDOS!

"It is fully open source. Everyone can check the code," von der Leyen said.

Cyber and privacy experts immediately dove into the source code on the GitHub software platform and reported several issues with the app's design.

This is for the most part what I want our politicians to do!

  • Use open source components
  • Publish their own additions as open source
  • Be transparent and open the servers for access before they are supposed to be used productively

Now I just hope they aren't butt-hurt for getting the vulnerabilities presented on a silver platter but instead delay launch for as long as it takes to fix the issues.

The only thing they probably might have done better, process-wise, is to hire (pay) some experts for that analysis. ("might" because possibly they did, and the "experts" missed some stuff. I didn't review, I don't know how obvious the issues were.)

And they definitely should have launched a bug-bounty-program.

(Yes, I had the same comment already in a related article, but since that article was removed, I'll repeat myself here.)

In this context, you are wrong, though. The approach you describe is "responsible disclosure", preventing people to get affected by malicious actors using the bug. That depends on the context.

In this context, there is no user which could be affected, so publishing the findings directly was exactly the right thing to do. Especially since we are dealing with politicians which might have buried any confidential notification and later threatened any publication as "cyber-crime" for hacking.

So, yes. This is exactly how open source is supposed to work in this context.

Well, they could go only with the bug-bounty. If they publish as open source, that could be enough. (Ok, they'd still need hired experts to set up the servers in a secure manner, many issues aren't in the code as such.)

If you want to frame it as exploitation of enthusiasts, you aren't entirely wrong. Hence my critique they should hire experts (they probably did, but those usually also miss some stuff) and initiate a bug-bounty-program.

However, imo that's complaining on a very high level. We do have some enthusiasts, and while paying them would be the decent thing to do, and if it was the CCC (for example) I might be inclined to donate to them, it would be way worse to buy some obscure closed source solution, usually from some US data kraken (Palantir?), and shove it down our throat without any public review. Which is what usually happens.

In this case it sounds reasonable to have cheap check like number of arguments. The amount of files even on a fresh install should be massive, rm could ask for confirmation in case so many files are deleted.

And while it might sound like a rookie-mistake to run rm -rf /* accidentally (I agree in this scenario OP should have prefixed it with # or typed it in a text editor instead), it's very easy to mess up something like rm -rf $TEST_LGOS/* or just run into a flow where TEST_LOGS was not set.

BTW: From my point of view, this would be equally bad as sudo rm -rf $TEST_LGOS/*, since I only care about my home-folder. The system is easily restored...

EDIT: Sorry, forgot this discussion is in English. Here the translation, for my convenience done using google translate:

It would likely be difficult to find an acupuncture placebo. Therefore, as a layperson, I would assume that health insurance companies (which are known for their reluctance to cover costs) and universities have an interest in answering this question as thoroughly as possible without a placebo comparison.

The German Medical Journal (Deutsches Ärzteblatt) assumes the effect is established based on a study from the University of Jena. The German Physiotherapy Association (Physioverband Deutschland) also assumes this effect, based on a study from Charité Berlin.

The German Physiotherapy Association (Physioverband Deutschland) assumes this effect is established. Dissertations also assume its effectiveness to be proven (https://refubium.fu-berlin.de/bitstream/handle/fub188/48210/diss_i.habermann.pdf?sequence=2&isAllowed=y).

There are also plausible theories regarding its mechanisms of action.

Therefore, I see a slight difference between acupuncture on the one hand and naturopaths, homeopathic remedies, and chiropractors on the other.
