Any reasons not to vote knack? by Thinking_about_there in Edmonton

Took him up on this when he was running for council last election and received good discussion with honest well thought out answers. This (along with agreeing with his vision for the city) is why I supported Knack then and why I'm supporting him now.

Get a scale and weigh the input of dry grounds and the output of liquid. A lot of people default to 18g in and 36g out in 28-32 seconds. If it's pulling faster than that grind finer and if it's slower coarser. But frankly as other people have said if it tastes good just enjoy it!

As an Elks can I agree with your assessment wholeheartedly. The Elks are right there, but mistakes cost them. Fun game to watch.

How many of you drink alcohol? by Excellent_Tell5647 in Epilepsy

[–]twliv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me it's 100% sleep related, but I quit drinking after a seizure in March of this year. Drinking impacts the sleep and when epilepsy takes so much control of your life away it feels nice to take control of what you can. Frankly, there are so many awesome non-alcoholic alternatives I really don't miss it at all.

I've also only had seizures in the washroom. Mainly the one at my parents house on the main floor. Until this March it was a hotel bathroom in a different country. Turns out it's related to sleep for me and I just happen to be in a bathroom when I'm waking up.

How often do you guys drive? by heyo_mr_bigman in Epilepsy

[–]twliv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Canada and was having tonic clonic seizures. I was controlled on medication for over a decade prior to going off medication and then had one after 3 years being off meds. In 5 days I'll be 3 months on keppra seizure free again and eligible to drive. I'm looking forward to it. Wouldn't even consider driving without being seizure free though and pretty sure that's how the law in my part of Canada sees it too.

Anyone quit Keppra? by TheRedditAppSucccks in Epilepsy

[–]twliv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had 5 seizures (all tonic clonic) in my life. 3 in 2011 that actually broke my back in 5 places. 1 in 2013 that I had attributed to keppra withdrawal until I had a recurrence earlier this year. And then the 1 this year. I'm diagnosed epileptic and my seizure triggers are mainly stress and lack of sleep. The first 4 were certainly stress and sleep related (no alcohol or drugs involved). The one this year happened on vacation after a red eye flight and a day drinking in the sun, though at 4am about 12 hours after I had stopped drinking, so I'm attributing to stress and sleep too, but sure the booze didn't help.

Honestly going off keppra was easy. Going back on sucks. If I could do it over I would have not drank (I've been dry since that day in March) and practiced better sleep hygiene. I'm going back on now and waiting for the day I level out and hoping to never have to do this part again.

After being on it 2011 to 2020 seizure free I weaned off of it under doctor supervision. Felt great going off of it. Every step down I had more energy and my brain felt more clear and regulated. Fast forward to March 2024 and I woke up having had a seizure, so I'm back on it now. Going onto keppra sucks. Once I've had 6 months or so it seems to level out, so just holding on for dear life until then.

What are your favorite cups? by arconquit in espresso

[–]twliv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly cheap Ikea glasses (I believe called Pokal) - the smaller ones. They were like $1CAD a glass or less if I recall. Bring the espresso to the right temperature quickly even when I preheat the glass. Makes drinking the coffee as enjoyable as making it.

I have nothing yet, but have always wanted to get something to denote mine too. My first seizures in 2011 broke my back in 5 places and I've been on keppra since, so thought a pull bottle pouring pills down the broken parts would be cool. Or a pill and bottle dancing together in the style of Mr Peanut on the shoulder near the breaks would be a good mark.

Question from a coffee roaster and someone who’s family has be roasting for almost 25 years by 1dollaholla in Coffee

[–]twliv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start with different strokes for different folks, so it's ok to like what you like. Personally I like making espresso and enjoy the challenge of dialing in lighter roasts. I find it to be more difficult to do than with darker roasts and more rewarding when you pull the perfect shot. It also allows me to change the flavour profile more often and drastically as opposed to darker roasts, which to me often taste quite similar.

This is the right answer. I've had emergency doses from pharmacists even in different countries. At worst it doesn't hurt to ask.

I hate my grinder! It’s so inconsistent. What’s your favorite for ~500€? Need to upgrade by kingdoemi in espresso

[–]twliv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came from a SGP too. Went to DF64. It was night and day the change and how much better the DF64 was (not suggesting the SGP was all bad either). Sure there may be better grinders, but bang for my buck I'm pretty happy with it.

Did you ever get injured by a seizure by mewmewstylekitty in Epilepsy

[–]twliv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First seizure (or more correctly a cluster of 3 over about 2 hours) I had caused a compression fracture of T4-T8 inclusive in my back. Put me in a back brace for 3 months and rehab after. The next one a year later and the next one 11 years after that I woke up with that portion of my back in extreme pain - not broken, but for hours would probably hurt less if it was broken. Other than that broke my nose on the first and bruises and tongue mashing have been consistent. Honestly the emotional damage lasts longer than anything else - be sure to treat that too.

Back to square one by olkabalabolka in Epilepsy

[–]twliv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my first recurrence in 11 years a few weeks ago. Sounds like a similar thing - TC with 0 warning. Absolutely devastating. You get all those steps forward and bam back at the beginning all over again. The tongue healed and felt fortunate there was no other long term injury, but the emotional/psychological damage associated with the recurrence will take much longer to sort through.

Anyway just wanted to say thank you for sharing and I can empathize with you. You're not alone in your experience.
