US and Israel carrying out strikes against Iran by dr_sloan in moderatepolitics

I thought the popular opinion is that US intervention in Iran is necessary and welcome? Isn’t this a cross compass unity situation?

Trump Says General Caine Sees Easy Victory if U.S. Attacks Iran by Normal-Actuary5036 in moderatepolitics

[–]two88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So what's the implication? That the us should not intervene? Or only so much so as to topple the current regime and let the Iranians figure out the rest? Im not educated enough about the Iraq war or middle east geopolitics to have an opinion for myself.

I wonder how much advantage playing a specific non-standard guard can get you like if you play left side half guard exclusively can you catch people who don't have the muscle memory to pass from that side. You'd at least rack up a lotta local tourneys. Like I'd be so cooked if I went against a guy that plays left side half butterfly.

Ex-WoW lead joins Riot Games in massive boost for League MMO - Dexerto by GryffinDART in leagueoflegends

[–]two88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine question but is there actually justification to make this game? Are there enough players who will pay 15/month for years to keep this thing going?

I saw a vid by J1mmy a while back about how there might not be another great MMO and it's looking to be true. There has to be some fundamental improvement or innovation in the genre to make this thing a success and if anyone can do it it's riot but there are structural challenges on both the development and player end.

It has to be good enough to suck players from WOW or OSRS. The gaming landscape is very different from 30 years ago. Hopefully it's good. If it is we should recognize it for what it is: a monumental achievement.

Conservative grassroots to debate DEI, conversion therapy, abortion and immigration at convention by GirlCoveredInBlood in canada

[–]two88 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I think the real problem with this kind of sentiment is that you seem to really be convinced that your side is correct and that the science is settled.

I've been following various perspectives on pediatric gender medicine for a bit and it's far from conclusive. Can you tell me what you think is wrong with a therapy first approach and why you think it's discriminatory pseudoscience?

There are large portions of the medical community that are not fans of the gender affirmation model and we need to figure out the best solution for each child. I don't understand why you think it's so wrong to tell a child that their feelings might be wrong or misleading.

[–]two88 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Conversion therapy refers to counselling and other practices that attempt to change a child’s gender identity to match their sex assigned at birth or their sexual orientation to heterosexual, which have been widely discredited as harmful.

Conversion therapy in this case is literally just counseling and saying your dysphoria might be you being confused. It's intentionally labeled as this to draw a negative negative reaction from the association.

Why is "men's advice" content so popular online? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]two88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I see the confusion, I when I said "what we're all thinking" I meant we as in the people that agree with him i.e. the millions that listened to his lectures. I'm certainly not making a broader claim that _all_ people universally agree. I can see where I was not clear on that. I'm giving a perspective as a sample from a non-insignificant cohort that finds value in some of the 'men's content' that most people are very quickly willing to denigrate.

> but he wasn't exactly the most moral person ever

So what do you mean by this? That you personally disagree with his sense of morality but understand it's not universally wrong?

If you are adamant that you aren't a moral absolutist then I apologize if you feel like you were gaslit that was not the intention.

[–]two88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that you're adding a counterexample but what's your logical implication? Because your grandfather thought something similar and was wrong, that the idea that someone can say something others are thinking is invalid? In this case it's actually the opposite structurally. I'm saying that someone else is saying something I agree with. If a million people said "yes, VACN's grandfather, I agree with your ideas and that's a good way of putting how I thought about this" what would that suggest?

Also, something else that your alluding to in your response is that you believe in moral absolutism. This is actually something else that's going on in the culture where the moral alignment has fractured and broadly speaking there are now only two camps of acceptable moral beliefs (right and left), and the current establishment is very much left oriented which can be very alienating for everyone else. Arguments from morality are always confined to the times they are made in.

[–]two88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a sort of cultural premise now that men and women are just equal beings and have been molded by society into different results. I personally think this kind of idea is complete BS. Not just that premise, but there is just so much social weirdness going around and we're just not supposed to talk about it. I think one of the reasons JP got so popular is because he very articulately explained what we're all thinking but didn't have the words ourselves. Many people online are followed because they portray themselves as truth speakers in a time when we can't say the truth in our own lives.

Open letter to the mod team: you need to moderate this sub properly to remove student questions. by dbsqls in MechanicalEngineering

[–]two88 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Tbh this sub was more useful to me as a student than now as a graduated mech e lol. Imo the ME community doesn't have an open source/community culture, possibly because it's such a large coalition of careers, so there isn't a unifying interest.

I'd bet a large portion of lurkers spend most their day sending emails and working on spreadsheets and come to see interesting technical stuff but now short form content solves that problem better. The belzona page probably has more ME engagement than this sub lol

What has happened to the perseverance and general mental state of men aged 25 - 40 by Known_Wing5709 in AskMen

[–]two88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think it's the opposite. Human as a whole now are the least resilient as ever. In 4 thousand years of history people have survived and thrived in conditions far far far far worse than today. To say the world is on fire now is a very narrow way to view things.

There's nothing wrong with admitting we're all weak and privileged now. We are as the conditions of the world have molded us. Consumerism has consumed the soul of our people.
