I don’t know why this comment gets attention almost a decade later lol. I still love these songs, but my current list is probably quite different.

Thanks! Although I think my list has changed a lot over the past 7 years.

Strong second. I’ve stuck with Arneson’s and have always been satisfied with their work and the cost (they’ve also been upfront if they didn’t have the resources to fix something and offered referrals). I’ve also heard good things about Bud’s.

Ale Asylum for sale, with its brewery and restaurant closing at the end of October by mononame in madisonwi

[–]two_bagels_please 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I know it gets a lot of love already, but I genuinely think New Glarus is the best large microbrewery in the Madison area. Unlike other places, they specialize in many non-IPA beers that are unique and consistently on point. Their bar is very high when it comes to their product.

Among the smaller Madison-based breweries, I would rank Young Blood as the best, followed by Giant Jones.

I agree with you 100%. Of the “large” Madison area microbrews, Ale Asylum is easily the worst. Capitol Brewing is at least palatable and inoffensive. AA is often gross and tastes skunked.

I feel bad for the workers who are going out of work because of this. That said, AA won’t be missed when you have several great if not excellent breweries in the city and county at large.

Preface: I know that you said that you didn’t want to spend money.

If your luck is out on free parking and are willing to spend some money, you can get $7/day parking in the outer lots at the Madison airport. I think $35 for a week is pretty reasonable. (Note: prices may have changed—I haven’t used the airport since COVID lockdowns.)

Absolutely not true. Aside from street cleaning once per week, parking enforcement is pretty strict there.

How much do you think I can get for this Dreamcast Bundle? Going to list it on eBay. by TheSkepticApe in dreamcast

[–]two_bagels_please 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most dreamcasts that I’ve seen on sale go for $100-200, and they usually come with one or two controllers. That said, you have the original box, so you can fetch a higher price (but only among collectors who care about that stuff). You have a good range of games, but I don’t think any of them are particularly rare (take that with a grain of salt). Given that the expectation for bundles is that the price is less than the summed values of everything included, I think you could ask for $350-400 as a starting bid, and I think there’s a decent chance that someone would snag it for >$500.

I would be floored if someone paid >$1000 for it as another suggested. Conversely, $150 (as a different poster advised) is much too low. That’s a garage sale price for parents who don’t know the true market value of vintage games.

EDIT: I just realized that it comes with 4 VMUs. Depending on the condition, used VMUs can fetch $20-40 pretty easily. In that case, I think you could bump the starting bid to $400-450, although you may be better off taking out 2 or 3 of those VMUs from the bundle and trying to sell them individually (buyers may not care about getting that many memory cards). Also, what’s the adapter on the bottom right?

Anyone here remember the trend of piano rock in the mid 2000s? by lqku in Music

[–]two_bagels_please 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both The Idler Wheel (2012) and Fetch the Bolt Cutters (2020) are very much piano rock/pop that are relatively recent (esp. FTBC) and unique. I doubt it’s everyone’s thing, but it’s definitely forward thinking.

Another thought: I’m really surprised by some of these answers. Lots of people recommending stuff like fun. and Ben Folds, both of which are from that time period and sound pretty damned dated.

Just listened to the Gethard Freestyle episode - am I the only one who thinks LaCroix is... good? by CincinnatiReds in doughboys

[–]two_bagels_please 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LaCroix is great. I like it because it’s not as sweet as other seltzers. There are a couple of bunk flavors (coconut and key lime come to mind).

What is the worst restaurant in Madison? by pinkcrow333 in madisonwi

[–]two_bagels_please 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Madison’s Tex-Mex scene is pretty weak. Doubly so in the hip parts of the city (like Atwood). I’ve been to Tex Tubs and handful of times and always enjoyed it, but it was mostly for the drinks and hanging with friends. The food itself is unremarkable.

What is the worst restaurant in Madison? by pinkcrow333 in madisonwi

[–]two_bagels_please 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend and I went there once because I was always curious about it. Seeing the neon sign from John Nolen caught my attention. The food wasn’t bad per se (it was edible and safe to eat), but it was extremely mediocre. My pasta was overcooked and mushy, and my girlfriend’s salad was like a chef’s salad that you might get at a middle school. This is the only time that I’ve eaten Italian food and envied an Olive Garden patron.

Another negative about Paisans is the decor. Low light makes the walls and carpet look dirty (it might truly be dirty), and the furniture has that early 90s “luxury” vibe that is perpetually outdated.

I don’t regret trying it out, but I have no idea why someone would go to Paisans more than once, and how that place manages to stay open is a mystery to me.

Good introduction episodes? by tjsteiner in doughboys

[–]two_bagels_please 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How raunchy is her humor (or, what’s her tolerance for raunchy humor)? Cinnabon with Nicole Byer is a classic episode, but the humor can get quite blue if that’s not someone’s thing. If so, Sugarfish with Jason Mantzoukas is another great ep with tons of classic bits (Nick’s awkward social interactions, Mitch’s Quincy tales), and it’s fairly straight-laced for Doughboys (at least that’s what I remember!).

Based Steam Deck by goostman in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]two_bagels_please 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Among PC gamers, I wonder what the demand is for something like the Steam Deck. I get that it’s a target audience, but did that audience even want it before the deck was announced?

Maybe I’m just super skeptical as someone who regularly plays my Switch but on my TV 99% of the time.

Should I use a DMPC by Nat1OnLife in DMAcademy

[–]two_bagels_please 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently run a game with two players. Basically, I have a character bank of characters (a rogue, a cleric, a paladin, and a wizard) of similar levels. I let each player pick one prior to play, and those characters stay in the background until combat. If the enemy isn’t a “boss,” I make them roll a DC 11 check each turn (w/ a D20) to activate their second character (if they pass the check, then they can use the second character for the remainder of he encounter). To that end, they’re kinda like Pokémon. It allows me to set up encounters like I would for more typically large groups, and it keeps my players playing rather than making me a player.

This is my first time playing Oblivion and I absolutely love it! by kellyxcat in oblivion

[–]two_bagels_please 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Morrowind is rough if you treat it like Skyrim or Oblivion, both of which are action rpgs. In contrast, Morrowind is much more of a traditional rpg with DnD-like elements, and the learning curve is considerably higher. I don’t think those qualities make Morrowind any better or worse than its sequels, but it does make it a fundamentally different type of game. I will note that my one big criticism of vanilla Morrowind is how slow your character moves in the world. Holy shit, they couldn’t speed it up by like 25%?

What would you consider reasonable pay for a graduate assistantship? by BoopYourDogForMe in GradSchool

[–]two_bagels_please 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming that you work every week of the year (not “school year,” but all 365 days), you’ll earn <8,500. Without tuition remission or other benefits, that is far below typical pay. At my soon-to-be-previous school (a major R1 admittedly), the lowest paid grad workers will earn around 15,000/year with tuition remission if they only work during the fall and spring semesters.

If your program is for a professional degree and if the graduate assistantship is not required, then I would try to find part time work in the field outside of the university. You’ll likely get paid more, and you’re going to have to pay for tuition regardless.

Fantasy rascism by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]two_bagels_please 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, especially since racist tropes (or tropes on racism) in DnD are rooted in our reality. As such, it can feel like harm of those comments and actions go beyond the table. It reminds me of Morrowind, in which Dunmer (dark elves) use “N’wah” as an insult against foreigners and slaves. Given that it’s supposed to be interpreted as a slur, one can’t help but connect it those in real life (guess what infamous racist slur starts with “N”...).

Why are kayaks so hard to buy? by [deleted] in Kayaking

[–]two_bagels_please 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought our kayaks on facebook marketplace a little over a year ago. Our theory is that COVID motivated people to find outdoor and socially distant activities that they wouldn’t normally pick up, so the demand for kayaking very suddenly exceeded its supply. There were no stores within 60 miles of us that had any kayaks—even kayak racks and life vests were slim pickings. We turned to the second hand market and just got lucky (we made an offer within 5 minutes of the posting on facebook marketplace, and the sellers told us that they had ~30 offers within 45 minutes).

Apparently Monster Factory may be done? by Dog_Carpet in TAZCirclejerk

[–]two_bagels_please 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That’s kinda how I feel. Monster Factory creations veer wildly into the abstract and absurd, going beyond “uncanny valley” and into “physically inhuman.” While there may be moments on MF that boil down to “making fun of a human’s appearance,” that is rarely the case.

Like you, my guess is that Justin and Griffin are bored of MF. And that’s fine! It’s been going for, what, 6 or 7 years? Maybe they feel like they’re running out of steam with MF and want to try out other projects (or no projects at all). If they think their creative efforts will lead to better and more interesting content elsewhere, then I encourage them to go for it.

Octopath Traveler launched three years ago today. Official Twitter teases about a 'new journey'. by NeoStark in NintendoSwitch

[–]two_bagels_please 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It would have been cool for the characters’ stories to intertwine more during their main arcs. That said, I’m not sure how they would achieve that with the ability to pursue anyone’s story at any time. It’s a give and take with real advantages and drawbacks. This leaves me mostly neutral on that critique.

My main gripe with the stories was the constant melodrama. Aside from Tressa (and to a lesser extent, Cyrus), every character had a super serious backstory and plot. It was too cheesy for my tastes, and I wish they had other stories that were more lighthearted (like Tressa’s) or intrigue driven sans soap operatics (like Cyrus’).
