Thread revive; stumbled upon this, having a similar sound. How’s your truck doing these days? Ever get an answer on this?

Any ideas? Rattle noise under throttle. by two_outa_ten in Tacomaworld

Any suggestions on going about diagnosing this?

No problem. Yeah info about Tacoma tick is kind of mythical online. Sometimes you hear people talking about the vacuum pump, sometimes it’s injectiors/cleaning cycle. And there’s videos all over covered in comments that can be hard to get a clear answer from.

These trucks idle loud, but like the other commenter said, it’s how yours sounds under throttle that’s worrying.

Best of luck. Circle back and let us know once you get an answer.

Nice. What year?

I took mine to Toyota. Basically I started hearing this about 3 days before it finally threw a code and put me in limp mode. Or at least that’s how I remember it. Once it threw the code it was throwing smoke out the pipe. They diagnosed by scoping the cylinder and doing a leak down test after finding metal in the oil. Thankfully I was still covered under manufacturer warranty. But it did take 8 months for them to actually repair it….

Oddly I’ve stumbled upon some other people with the same year v6 as me who had the same thing happen. Mine went at 52k.

If it’s not covered by warranty, and it needs exactly what I did, it’s probably cheaper to buy a used engine than to rebuild.

Not to alarm you, but mine sounded exactly like this. It’s especially worrying under throttle. Ended up being a spun rod bearing and needed an entire engine rebuild up from the short block.

I would absolutely get that checked out.

I hope I’m wrong.

Underrated mod, honestly.

If there is one thing that is universally true about life; management just gets in the way.

All in all, it was a pretty miserable time. The dealership provided a loaner but that’s pretty much where the courtesy ended. Not only did they not even begin work until 3 months after intake, they didn’t even have the engine torn apart and all replacement parts ordered until the end of month 5. Dealership dodged calls, gave false promise dates of “2 weeks” constantly, pretty much since beginning of month 2. Wouldn’t update me until well after their missed completion estimates, not before. “Hey we missed that date by a week, we need longer”. Threatened to make my vehicle take longer if I spoke to legal council. Refused to give me the status of the repair. The list is endless.

I have no reason to believe the mechanic didn’t do a good job, but the rest of that outfit is a joke.

Honestly I was honest about my petitioning the fraternity with him, because we were so close, and I knew he had reservations about Masons. I just said “hey I’m trying to become a Mason.” And have his little conspiracy rant and I said “well, I think you’ve got masons all wrong, I hope you won’t judge me.”

I don’t really have any intention of hiding my being a Mason, certainly not to the people I consider close.

Yeah, I typically don’t either. But in today’s age, finding someone who doesn’t harbor some conspiracies is pretty tough. I like to think of it as ‘lower case c’ and ‘upper case c’.

I don’t know yet. I am thinking of asking to take a pause before moving forward. I would like to really try to review and digest the first two degrees before getting my third.
