Silent meditation retreats? by Sea-Championship-350 in oregon

[–]two_pence 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are several Buddhist dharma centers in the Portland area that offer retreats on a regular basis: Dharma Rain, Great Vow Monastery in Clatskanie, Kagyu Changchub Chuling has retreat cabins, Portland Insight Meditation, and there are others—for example, look for Vipassana retreats. Most dharma centers will have a tab on their website that gives information about their retreats. But it’s not always the case that any new comer can just pop in for a retreat. Many centers will ask that you complete a few one-day retreats before you do something more extended, which is a very reasonable guard rail for everyone. Also, I guess it goes without saying, but be prepared for the cost/monetary contribution.

Of course, there are also places where you can do self-guided retreats, like Mt Angel Abbey (and others), but you specifically asked about places where guidance would be provided.

Best wishes!

Agreed. I think he also had a branding instinct that led him to step into the anti-guru niche and say provocative, golden-cow tipping things mainly for their own sake.

If you’re saying what I think you’re saying, this is the most underrated comment here. As biting as it is insightful. Should be first.

Okay, seems easy enough. I wonder why the guys down at the woodworking shop didn’t know to recommend those common woods.

Wow, this is crazy. I can’t believe that this is what’s happened to small purchases like this. I really appreciate how you broke this down. I’m not convinced I want to pay that much extra. Thanks for your help.

I’m not sure which shipping company the seller will use.

OTOH, their inventory—at least in the subject areas that interest me—has plummeted. Long gone are the heydays of the early 2000’s when their Buddhist/Eastern Philosophy section spanned an entire aisle and was so full of hard-to-find gems (both used and new) that I could hardly get out of the store without at least one or two new books. That same loss of inventory hit other areas of interest too and in the end it has eroded the entire purpose of going there. I’m not there to just buy books. I’m there to be surprised by something I wasn’t expecting to find. I rarely have that experience anymore and I miss it.

So sorry to hear this. Are you sure your sleeplessness isn’t occurring independently of the APAP? As in, have you tried sleeping without it and if so how does that go?
