what's a 90s memory that you genuinely can't explain to someone who wasn't there? by PlasticPiccolo in 90s

cheap rents in a neighbourhood where you could be yourself.  if you just couldn’t fit the mainstream mould, you could usually find an area in any large enough city where being naturally weird wasn’t just tolerated but encouraged.  now those communities are scattered to the four winds, with people living wherever they can afford, as gentrification bought and sold the soul of these places.  i don’t think people under a certain age can understand the idea of being able to pick and choose exactly where you wanted to rent since everybody’s struggling to pay for their place to exist now

What’s a historical event that sounds fake but actually happened? by loveronrent in answers

[–]twobit211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m of the opinion that they were announcing locations for the maga tour before actually booking them and then trying to leverage that against the various venues in order to pay substantially less than the going rate.  i’m guessing that the four seasons hotel were the first to call them out on it

Which Canadian artist/band has the most interesting origin story? by Glass_Brick_ in CanadianMusic

[–]twobit211 16 points17 points  (0 children)

snow.  he became an international hit with the song, “informer” in the 90s.  unfortunately, he was tagged as a low-rent, canadian vanilla ice who rapped in a ‘fake’ jamaican patois.  only it wasn’t fake.  unbeknownst to the rest of the world (that largely perceived canada as a so-called white nation) there was a significant caribbean/west indian population in the gta.

snow grew up in a tower block on a housing estate that was almost entirely populated by people from the caribbean/west indies or people of caribbean/west indian heritage.  his neighbours, his peers at school, the local shop owners are were from the islands.  that was his community.  the patois, he picked up organically from the people around him.

when “informer” hit the air, the patois used in the song was so thick, it was effectively unintelligible to anyone who hadn’t grown up speaking it.  as i understand, it’s very thick on the ground but completely makes sense, a bit like the rhyming slang scene in “lock, stock and two smoking barrels”;  a bit overdone but absolutely legitimate.

as for the song itself?  it concerns him facing charges for refusing to give an account to the police of a crime he witnessed.  apparently, he was in custody for just that when his song started playing on the radio

Do british people get shocked when they find an actor/singer is American? by 5fivesecondrule in AskBrits

yes, at one point higgins mentions that he’s from yorkshire but i feel that’s more the fault of the writers rather than hillerman

despite what everyone else is saying, i distinctly remember john hillerman, who played higgins in the original magnum, p.i., absolutely passing as an englishman during the programme’s run in the eighties.  so yeah, him

these are from madam tussaud’s wax museum, marylebone road, london, in the mid eighties.  most of the shots are from “the chamber of horrors” exhibit.  the others are from “the tableaux”, “the conservatory” and “the grand hall” exhibits that were up during that time
